Week 168: Favorite Weapons

Results may be posted until July 10th, 2016.

Designed by: JHC and Gabe White, inspired by Miyamoto Musashi
Range: 7 and 25 yards
Target: USPSA Metric or IDPA target
Start Position: Ready
Rounds Fired: Varies (at least 20)

This is intended as a short comparison of a shooter's capability with different handguns. The drill is shot from ready and uses no more than five shots per string in order to be capacity and holster-neutral.

The scoring will be very simple: score = time, plus penalties. A/B/-0 zones are no penalty. C/-1 zone is + 0.5 seconds per shot. D/-3 zone is + 1.5 seconds per shot. Misses are + 2.5 seconds per shot. No make up shots allowed.

Pick at least two guns to use for this drill. More is great too.

String 1: Place the target at 7 yards. At the start signal, shoot 3 body and 2 head. Record your hits and time.

String 2: Place the target at 25 yards. At the start signal, shoot 5 body. Record your hits and time.

Repeat String 1 and 2 for each gun you're going to use.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Target used
Gun used
Score (time plus penalties) for String 1
Score (time plus penalties) for String 2
Total score (String 1 + String 2)
Anything you noticed

Please report the above for each gun you used!

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Observations: I can pick up a 1911 for occassional slow fire or close range and get by. But apply speed at a more challenging task like 25 yards promptly and the wheels come off snatching that nice crisp SA trigger. Somewhat the same challenge with the Sig in SA trigger mode.

The KKM compensator allows you so see so much so flatter with less recoil I can outrace myself. BES did NOT have that problem. ;)

The .357 Sig recoil seemed to slow me down enough that I kept up better with my trigger presses.

I carry a G26 more than anything else nowadays. Cool.

The comped G19 is just so damn much fun to shoot. Getting accustomed to control one's pace better and it should be lights out. After the DoW I shot The Test with the comped 19 and shoot it once; clean in 5.64 sec (97 score) which may be my fastest clean Test.

I shot this right after warming up with the Defoor Pistol test #1 so the G19 was closest to cold and the beretta was most warmed up, albeit a different trigger system. I only shoot the beretta when I need a fun day away from my normal training/practice guns. Apparently I was anticipating like crazy and pushing shots all over with it today. I am generally more confident with my 19 then my other glocks, but a few slow first runs on each of the strings brought the averages up. My other 17 is off getting stippled and chopped so I didn't have it to compare.

Targed used: USPSA Metric

HK VP9:
String 1: 1.41 clean
String 2: 2.49 1C = 2.99
Total: 4.40

STI Trojan 1911 .45
String 1: 1.68 clean
String 2: 2.97 2C = 3.97
Total: 5.65

I am always intrigued to see how I do with different guns, so I ran this at the start of my practice session today. I haven't shot a 1911 in the better part of a year, so I was particularly curious to see how it would measure up to a gun I shoot all the time. Turns out there is an advantage to regularly practicing with a specific gun. I wasn't expecting to demolish my time with a 1911 quite as much as I did when shooting the VP9. I'm sure with a little focused practice on the 1911, I could bring those numbers a lot closer. Most of the time difference was either an issue of manupulations, or more difficult sight tracking with the increased recoil of a .45 at longer range.

Talionis,

Thanks, BES! Strong work yourself. Without derailing a drill thread: my competition VP9 has Dawson sights (FO .100 front; black .125 rear), a slightly lighter striker spring, and it has an "ultra match" trs/sear spring kit from hkparts, which I will be removing from the gun in the next few days in favor of a fully HK solution. Oh, and many thousands of trigger pulls worth of polishing.

Gun used: Gen3 G34
Score (time plus penalties) for String 1: 1.24 + 0 = 1.24
Score (time plus penalties) for String 2: 2.23 + 0 = 2.23

Gabe's results totally confirm my experience, which is the G26/19 are no disadvantage up close, and the longer sight radius models come into their own at longer distances. Especially the 34 at 20-25 yards.

Talionis, you need an HK 1911 to give it a fair test.

Anything you noticed: I like the .40 round but the 9mm is easier and more pleasant to shoot for sure. The M&P feels better in the hand, I did better with the Glock. Feelings can and sometimes do lie.

Would like to run this again with these two and a couple more handguns including my old issued .357 if I get the chance before the deadline.

Score (time plus penalties) for String 1: 1.95 clean
Score (time plus penalties) for String 2: 3.07 clean
Total score (String 1 + String 2): 5.02
Anything you noticed: I shot this a few times and a few other drills to get a better feel of the sights with the speed and recoil behavior using the comp. It makes you go too fast sometimes it seems. But this was my last of several with this pistol.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/78036189@N07/27739273266/in/dateposted-public/

I also used it to shoot a 7.73 El Prez with one C which I think might be a PR and a 5 shot 25 yard slowfire group of 1.5" with the 124 Lawman.

I think it's my "favorite" now.

Anything you noticed: New CAP sights are good. Very good. I like this little stinker. Shot a 90 on it for ten on a B8 at 25 yards. It has great potential.

Did POA/POI change with the comp? A few years ago I put a comp on a .45 1911 and had to change the sights.

It did but the comp change included a KKM barrel so from OEM it impacts a bit higher at 25 yards. I just discovered it passionately prefers the Lawman 124 to the Lawwman 115 in terms of group sizes, but the 124s impacts a bit higher than the 115s. Total for the 124s I'd say about 5" above POA. These barrels sort of cry out for adjustable sights or a RDS. Okie John made that point about his match barrel experiments too.

I just finished 24 runs through this with 13 different guns. :) I shot horribly today, but I shot equally horribly with all guns, so it's still a valid test. LOL I used IDPA targets.

To save space and my typing fingers, I'm only going to list totals after penalties for each gun. And there were lots of penalties. Lots of points down. :(

Gen 4 G-17: 9.48, 9.35, 9.18, 8.37
Gen 3 G-19: 7.94, 7.14 which was the best score of the day.
Gen 4 G-26: 10.65, 8.78
G-43: 14.13, 13.37 I dropped a bunch of points at 25.
S&W 442: 16.71 Nasty little thumb biter. I only shot this once.
HiPower: 8.24, 9.77 This has Novak night sights that are hard for me to see.
1911 9mm Commander: 7.94, 11.1
1911 9mm 5 inch: 10.91, 9.73
CZ75 DA/SA: 12.6, 9.00
CZ P01: 8.42, 9.10
Savage Mod 1915 32 ACP: 19.72, 18.52 non-existent sights on this pistol.
Walther PPK 32 ACP: 12.42, 15.22
Beretta Mod 20 25ACP: 17.52

Things I noticed: Good visible sights are very important to me. It seems the bigger the better. Also a smooth trigger pull is needed for me to get good hits. James Bond was a fictional character. I know because he could have never made those shots with the double action trigger on the Walther. ;)

It looks like I should stick with my Glocks. :) Although both 9mm 1911's, the HiPower and both CZ's have promise with practice. The feel of all the guns in recoil is different. I think with some dedicated practice with each pistol, I could give better results.

I had lots of points down that were just out low. I seemed to be doing a lot of trigger snatching today.

I have a problem locking in when I shoot from a ready. Some of these runs might have been better if I had drawn from a holster.

I enjoyed shooting this DotW.

That's pretty interesting. Usually I think ready has a huge advantage by starting with your best grip, unlike from the holster where you have to get that same grip at speed.

I guess I was just lazy. The gun was just sort of hanging out there with little attempt to control it. ;)

I worried about this when I was shooting GSSF. Should I do a compressed ready with a press out or a low ready and just raise the pistol. When I timed it, I was faster to the first shot with a low ready. I might do some more runs of this DotW using a compressed ready. What do you use?

For GSSF I do the compressed ready. I think it is more game-able under GSSF rules than the low ready they specify. Their low ready is 45 degrees down at the ground/six feet away from the shooter, which is pretty far down with the distance the targets are at. I'd use it if they let me align the muzzle with the base of the target. As it is, they require compressed ready to have the muzzle level and arms touching the torso. I can assume that position with the gun at about a 3.5 (in drawstroke language), so most of the way out there. I suppose it might be worth trying the extended low/threat ready that I'd rather use, aimed at the base of the target and see if they make me adjust it.

G3 G-19: 11.89, 9.47, 8.02, 7.51

These are totals for each run.

Things I noticed: Again sights are very important. Part of the time today I was shooting from in the sun, but as the shadows lengthened, I was shooting from the shade. Makes a large difference.

Also, ergonomics and the way the gun cycles make a difference. My hands fit Glocks. The HiPower and the CZ both feel foreign in my hands. They cycle completely different from the Glocks. I have to be much more aware while shooting them.

I had all hits on target except for a few head shots where a combination of hard to see sights and going too fast caused misses.

After all this I have decided that "my" favorite weapon is some sort of Glock. I can do decent work with some others if needed. ;)

I thought I would update this a little and break down String 1 and String 2.

String 1. With anything that was a more or less a service type pistol, raw times were from 2.5 to 3 seconds. Often points down would be zero unless I had a head miss and added 2.5 seconds. All pistols were pretty even at this distance. Clear winners were the pistols I am most familiar with.

String 2. Raw times here were mostly between 4 and 5 seconds. The main difference between the pistols were the sights and how well I could see them. All pistols were capable of shooting down zero slow fire. Points down were all operator error. ;)

The novelty pistols were fun to shoot and see just how bad they were. Even at that, they would be better than a sharp stick. :)

IPSC target
H&K P30 v1 9x19: 2.44-0, 3.65-2, 8.09
Wilson CQB-C .45: 2.69-0.5, 3.42-2, 8.61

All misses were low, mostly at 25. The trigger control issues with the rusty HK were not surprising, but uncharacteristic for the CQB; shooting the P30 first might have jacked with me.

Well this one gave me a few surprises
Target used IDPA paper.

Sig P229 DA/SA 4.60 8.86 Total 13.46
Sig P229 DA/SA 4.07 8.61 Total 12.68
M&P Shield 9mm 4.03 9.93 Total 13.96
M&P Shield 9mm 3.19 9.50 Total 12.69
Glock 19 3.71 10.44 Total 14.15
Glock 34 3.68 8.93 Total 12.69
P2000 LEM .40. 7.72 16.5 Total 24.22

Things I noticed first thing I noticed was that I didn't read the drill very well because these were all body shots.
I will try to make it out this weekend and do this drill right.
The most surprising thing for me doing this drill was how well I did with the shield I ran it just as well as my Glock 34 on this drill.
I'm sure if a reload or a draw was incorporated into this drill things would shake out different. Also I was surprised by the P229 DA/SA .40, I ran this slightly faster than the other pistols despite me using Federal 180gr factory loads for the 40 and a softer (130PF) reload for the 9mm's.
I obviously couldn't shoot the LEM for anything today.

Target: USPSA Mtric
Gun: Glock 26 Gen3 with G19 Magazine, from concealment using Safariland ALS holster
Score (time plus penalties) for String 1: 4.44
Score (time plus penalties) for String 2: 6.29
Total score (String 1 + String 2): 10.73

Gun: M&PShield 9mm with thumb safety, from concealment using IWB CompTac holster
Score string 1: 9.58 (somehow missed both head shots pushed way low, body shots were all alphas)
Score string 2: 6.99
Total score: 16.57

Still want to do this with a couple other pistols I have. No real surprise time, the weapon type I have shot most was by far the best. Still don't know what happened with the Shield and the head shots. Did not feel myself shove that bad.

Anything you noticed

Anything you noticed- I still outshot my Glock 34 with the Sig P229 .40. I am kind of shocked by that. I still shoot the shield at a surprising level for me, yes it squirms a little during recoil and the slow fire groups aren't the best but I can run it pretty good at speed.

You need to get ahold of a 229 in 9mm and give it a go! And a 19!

I would but I've already spent too much money chasing the unicorn gun. I'm going to stick to Glock for this year and revisit this again next year. If I still shoot the Sig better, I will make the switch or go to a real Gamerfag gun like the Shadow 2;)
