Nyeti: Not too sound horrifically fanboi'ish, but if you gave a treatise on why a particular animals poop were better to step in than others, I'd read it.

To put it not so crudely, yes some of us care. :)

Good article that covers the basics well without getting bogged down in the hardware. I like that it emphasized that the shotgun user needs training and practice to have an effective tool.

It is actually something I am unfortunately a SME in. For whatever fricking reason, if there was potential to step in fecal matter at work, I was in it. Worst one ever.....had two armed robbery suspects who broke into a house in the barrio and were barricaded inside with a family. I deploy a scoped carbine from prone under a car bumper in the best cover position I have likely had in one of these things, and then I smell it. I made my little sniper hide in a pile of fresh dog crap. I am also very smell sensitive. I ll just say....it made me joyous when the main scum bag was sitting at the end of my rifle in the house getting mauled my a Malanois behind a clothes dryer.

Thanks for giving us a link to the article.

Question - are you and Wayne going to be able to offer another shotgun class this fall?

Here are some photo's from a manhunt for a guy who ran from a car full of dope at the agency where I am training their SRT unit. So, yeah, horses and tracking dogs for the win.

Glad to hear it. I am REALLY liking the Luckygunner stuff and the direction of providing solid no frills information to regular folks who are often victims of severe misinformation. While I love interacting with highly knowledgeable gun folks which are in abundance at a forum like this, I am passionate about trying to get solid information out there to the regular folks who are not immersed in the gun culture and often do not have good sources for information. Luckygunner is a place you can send people to get presented good information in a sane adult manner. Chris has done a stellar job.

Read the article when it came out and it's solid. A lot of their content is. I think mainly because they present it in a simple way and use SME to help them compile the information. Also shotguns are awesome.

Thanks for that, Nyeti. Though my only current shotty is a pre-war Ithaca 37 (https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?17668-Gauge-Pic-Thread&p=432176&viewfull=1#post432176), I feel a little better about it's value as a home-bacon-saver. All it has needed has been a polymer follower and fresh mag spring. It's old enough to have no trigger disconnect, so yeah, trench broom. Best trigger in the house, bar none. Will have to check into a) one of your classes for next year, and b) a good 870 with intelligent mods.

I was under the impression that Lucky Gunner was founded by a couple of former students of Glenn Reynolds, AKA Instapundit.com (http://instapundit.com) He seems pretty proud of them and mentions them frequently. They really seem to want to raise the bar.

It is kind of funny on that. I have basically avoided ever telling the part of the story about the crooks both telling investigators that they heard me rack the shotgun prior to the shooting starting because I always feared it would add to the myth when the story got re-told wrong years down the line. We'll see if it stays in context.

It is funny how I even knew about it. I was in the post shooting interview with the investigators. We were going over the events in sort of a minute by minute chronology and what I did and what I was thinking. I was following the two carjackers and put the shotgun across my lap so I could deploy it immediately if the crooks stopped and engaged. I told them that I may have racked it. Both detectives started laughing and it seemed weird. I think they could see the confusion on my face and they said that the only truthful thing the crooks said in sewerage interviews was that they heard the shotgun get racked when I got out of the car and started shooting.
Looking back, I am sure it was a weird surprise for them of "plan A" going wrong. They threw the truck they carjacked in reverse on a slow turn and rammed my unit trying to get the airbags to deploy. I guess they were expecting to be laughing at the big white bags and smoke pouring out of the police car instead of what actually poured out of the police car.

Most excellent! I have a new SBS set up, and will hopefully have a Benelli Entry Gun by then as well. Trying to decide on the M2 or Nova version.

It will be fun to see you guys again. :)

I Worked for a company that dealt in Refrigerated Liquid Nitrogen and Compressed Hydrogen Gas. Among the places we delivered one was a Nuclear Plant. One day one of our transport drivers checked in with security. Instead of the usual escort following in a company truck. The security person wanted to ride in the truck with his Shotgun at ready. Drive called the company for their approval, The company wisely said NO!. They offered them to have security officer ride with a holstered sidearm, or follow in a truck, or refuse the shipment all together. They eventually walled off the delivery area with triple wide Concrete barriers. So after checking in ... the transport drivers were allowed to do their job alone.

Excellent article. I'v used shotguns at work for years until we got that, "cute little plastic carbine" to play with. The shotguns still are in theca's, but I only grab them if I know that I'm going up against dogs.

I was stationed in Southern California in another lifetime, at a Marine Airstation in Tustin. I was detailed to Guard Duty for a month to conduct base security. This was during the summer Olympics in 84 when President Regan was having a disagreement with Kadafi. We did a lot of training with shotguns and enclosed places. One really effective technique we were taught involved working in tight spaces and around corners. It was something I have never seen since, yet I used often at work as a Beat Cop.

Yeti's photo of Short Sticking gives this technique a name after so many years.

I love my AR's, but will always own a couple of 870's. Just because..

Given a choice, as a general purpose "all around" long gun, I will take an M4 carbine pretty much every time, but I have a serious thing for short barreled A5s.

Pure destruction at the hands of John Moses Browning.

The A5 has been in service since (I think) 1902. Darn near 115 years of use.

For perspective. The Browning Auto 5 was being produced when the American military was still engaged in the Indian Wars.

It's just as effective now as it was during the time period of the Great War, WWII, and other major conflicts.

In more "modern" times, I have seen pics of "Rhodesian" A5s, with extended tubes and fore ends. Quite unique pieces.

I also am a fan of the Browning long recoil shotguns, especially the Model 11 variants. The thread of the 870 magazine tube matches the Model 11, but the Model 11 threaded portion is longer. With a simple spacer, one can add capacity to a five-shot Model 11 using any of the 870 magazine extensions.

The issue I see with the Model 11 is parts availability. I have plenty of fiber buffers and friction pieces, but a cracked bolt cannot be replaced without buying another gun for parts. Same for forearm wood.

You should see him short stick an AUG. He makes it pretty clear you have a degree of control over extension of the gun that's very pistol-like.

An interesting thing to think about.

Wyatt Earp was in his mid 50's when the Browning A-5 was put into production, and it was a roughly 30 year old design when he passed away.

Yet today, in the age of the iPhone, and 3D printing, the Auto-5 is still a deadly effective home defense weapon.

I found this fun article on shotguns. Not very informative but it is a fun read

http://www.wnd.com/2016/06/stuff-you-never-knew-about-shotguns/

“Over the centuries, mankind has tried many ways of combating the forces of evil … prayer, fasting, good works and so on. Up until Doom, no one seemed to have thought about the double-barrel shotgun. Eat leaden death, demon.” – Terry Pratchett

To paraphrase Dr. Marcus Brody from “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Bible speaks of the shotgun leveling mountains and laying waste in entire regions. A prepper that carries a shotgun before it … is invincible.”

Great article. I'll send it to a friend of mine from work who has been thinking of buying something for home defense but isn't quite sure what yet; he and his wife have two small girls. His police friends told him to get a shotgun, complete with the racking the slide myth.
