I am looking at hammer fired single stacks to replace my shield. I have been really loving my p07 and would like a small 9mm to carry when I can not carry the CZ. Any thoughts on what your real life use is on these? I like my shield but am really digging that da pull.

I am looking at-

S&W 3953/cs9 but the cs9 seem to be hard to find
Sig p290rs
Used lc9
Sig p239 is out of my price range

Since you say you like the double action pull, maybe something like a Kahr would be good? It is technically a striker but the trigger feels entirely like a smooth double action Sig or Beretta and nothing like a Glock or Shield. They are affordable, almost all of them are single stack, and you have a choice of sizes.

I really like a P239 9mm.

As do I. I don't think there is a better single stack 9mm with a hammer.

The OP mentioned the P239 is out of range.

What are your thoughts on the Sig P225A1? Looks like a honker of gun for a single stack but a nice looking gun. Haven't seen any long term reviews.

Three of my friends have recently bought the Sig P290RS 9mm. I think it is a great little gun but the jury is still out on its long term performance.

I recall comparing the 225 to the 239 when the came out and they were pretty much the same size. The 225 Maxwell probably wasn't big enough for .40 so they started over with the rounder 239.

Of your list, I'd vote for a S&W. Seems like their wheelhouse. There was also the 908.

I like the p239 but I have roughly a sub 500$ budget. The p225 is a little bigger then I am thinking also. I like the third gen smiths but the p290rs seems appealing. Problem is like mentioned I do not know anyone with a lot of rounds through one.

To the OP, from my experiences, the Sig P239 9mm is THE best single stack subcompact 9mm made. It shoots and handles like a larger gun, and is one of the most accurate guns out there.

You can get a used P239 9mm on Gunbroker for $450-$550 depending on the condition and bidders.

No longer in production but neither is the 3953 but have you considered a 3913?

I like the dao more on the smaller pistols. Found 3953 in stock for a good price. Really like the size of the cs 9. But have yet to see one for a decent price. The p239 is on the heavy side for my likes. Considered a kahr but prefer hammer. I know pain in the arse question since strikers are the go to now a days.

S&W recently released a run of 3953TSW pistols from a 2013 production lot. They are available various places. You may have to drill the rivets if you can't abide the rail, but it may be worth considering versus buying one of the many harder-used turn-ins that are the likely alternative.

If you would consider dropping down to 9x18, a Bulgarian Makarov might be something to consider.

This sounds like a solid plan. I am down to either the 3953 or the p290rs. Going to have tp look around and see what the prices are in the 3953tsw

Shoot the P290rs if you can before you buy it. I have one, and I have put about 300-400 rounds through it -- not a lot. (Sorry I haven't kept a better round count). In that low round count, it has been fine, no malfunctions, positive ejection and the trigger has smoothed out to be not bad at all. They can be cheap -- or at least they were a year and half ago or so. Maybe $300?

However, the ergos are just a little off. The trigger guard and trigger are weirdly shaped and it'll bite my finger if I put too much finger through. Which leads me not to shoot it much. It isn't a bad recoiler though, and it really has a diminutive grip. I just haven't really messed with it much for the last year. I was attracted to it for the same reason as you, seems like a safer alternative for i.w.b carry.

The only answer here is the P239. I've seen used ones sell for under $400, and if that's too expensive then I don't know what to tell you.

I was checking out my buddy's P290RS yesterday. Didn't shoot it but I really like the feel of the gun. The DOA trigger is really nice. I am going to see how their experiences are with it and maybe grab one. I love my PPS but I have been seriously considering going to a DAO or DA/SA gun for AIWB carry for that little added measure of safety. P290 seems like a good option.

The DOA trigger is really nice.I'm definitely not one to poke fun at other's typos, but the frequent reversal highlighted here just tickles me. Loves me some Dead On Arrival triggers!

^^^the Bersa Thunder .380 was famous for that, until they started soldering springs into the trigger bar. :D

I think the original p290 had a "DOA" (dead-on-arrival) trigger as well. Never had one, but lots on the internet about that. The 290rs has a different trigger design which is pure double action I think, same pull every time. I have still seen original p290 "non-rs" versions at gun shops, so watch out for that... The slide is clearly marked "RS" I think on RS versions, which is all the new ones are on the sig website.

Save a little more money and buy a SIG P225A1. You'll thank me.

Nothing wrong with a P290rs. I didn't put a ton of rounds through one so I can't speak about long term durability. Advantages, it's accurate, the DA is really smooth, the stock grips are really grippy and replaceable, stock Siglite night sights standard, pretty inexpensive for what you get if you shop around.

Disadvantages, the trigger breaks a long way back and there's some over travel IIRC, long reset, pretty thick for a single stack, pretty heavy for a single stack, slow reloads, very good at pinching hands if you try reloads fast, magazines are expensive if I remember right.

If the advantages and disadvantages meet your needs I think it would be worth trying. I replaced mine with a j frame which obviously has a completely different set of advantages and disadvantages. The j frame just met my needs better.

I can not find one in stock to check out. Not ordering it before I at least hold one. I have a j-frame. A 637. Would like a pocket carry pistol with a more firepower though.

My Sig 938 has been a good reliable little gun of course YMMV.

Concur. I compared one to my P229 and it was almost exactly the same to my non-calibrated eyeball. I checked Sig's web site and it's tenths of an inch here and there. Cool gun, I guess for capacity restricted states it's cool, well, it's cool regardless, but hard to justify as practical.

I see used 239s on my local boards in the $500-550 range pretty frequently lately. I saw a LNIB SAS the other day too .... it sure was nice. Tempted me but then I remember I hate SIG DA/SA triggers.

Just saw one go on gunbroker, 9mm with 3 mags for about $470ish.

It seems to me that P239 triggers are consistently smoother than 226/229 triggers, might still be worth a look.

I've been watching those as well. I'm trying to tell myself I have a holster on order and I should continue to focus on my 26 & 19
