View Full Version : Homeopathic Remedies

So, I've had a cold for almost a week now, and as a paramedic and a pre-med student, most of my focus is on some form or variation on western medicine.

However, when you're sick for days on end and nothing seems to be working, you start to get a little desperate. So, in order to cheer myself up a little, I thought it would be fun to read a thread about homeopathic/untraditional remedies that others here recommend.

So, I'd love to hear your recommendations as to homeopathic remedies. They don't have to be limited to remedies for a cold. Just reading something insightful, delightful or humorous will be remedy enough for me.

So? What do you recommend? What works for you? Any weird family traditions that work? Something you've created yourself? Something you wouldn't think that works, but is some miracle panacea?

After you get better .. Try Brazil Nuts.
I consume them in the winter and have not been sick for a long time( Does nothing for my mental state of being sick :) )

Go have sick people sneeze on you?

Well, that's my day to day. I actually think I got sick because I got stuck taking ICS 300 and 400 last week, and literally a lady from Public Health kept coughing and sneezing on me without covering her mouth. I kept thinking, "Isn't that like the one job you have...like to put posters up about that shit?" (Kidding...I know they do a lot of other stuff)

I know you were being a bit facetious by using the "actual" definition of homeopathy, but I meant it more in the "broadly accepted" definition of "untraditional medicine".

My great aunts cure was lots of hard liquor...clears the sinuses and you feel better! Then again, she was an alcoholic and died of liver failure...

Nah, I really can't suggest much more than switching over to hot tea instead of coffee for a bit and hitting the expectorants and decongestants PRN.

I do know a remedy for hiccups that a Romanian guy taught me and it's never failed me or anyone I suggested it to and that's the breadth of my alternative medicine skills.

Probably didn't help me that two weeks ago I went on the John Wayne diet. I was in Socorro, NM for training, and, on a bet, went on the John Wayne diet. Alcohol, black coffee and a giant steak for every meal. For a week. It was awesome for like 1 day...but I did it for 4 days.

I guess it could be considered a "cleanse" of some sort. I pretty much cleansed all of the nutrients and beneficial flora out of my colon.

If I catch it early, zinc-based stuff like Zicam actually works pretty good for me. But once a cold gets settled I don't think there's much you can do except get some rest.

And bourbon.

Definitely not. I haven't been able to get out of bed, which means I haven't been able to shoot.

Chicken soup......and not from the store. Old school Jewish chicken soup with egg noodles. Very bland with simple ingredients and all the chicken boiled in it. I literally used to keep Cool Whip containers (Jewish Tupperware) of my grandmothers chicken soup in my freezer for emergencies. I think it has something to do with the Chicken fat. Combined with some of the heavy vitamin and zinc products and Nightitme severe cold and flu medicine (so you can sleep) is my gold standard. Also...this time of year a lot of this stuff is crap based in your sinuses. As much as I hate water boarding myself, the netti pot is a big part of my current treatment for anything involving green crud in my system,

This. My sinuses destroy me from March until June and the sinus rinse makes the outside world tolerable.

Would that be a "Nyeti" pot, in your case?

Just remember that if you flush any homeopathic dilution (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeopathic_dilutions) down the toilet, the succussion occurring as it passes through the wastewater system and dilutes further will cause its potency to be so high when it enters the ocean that it will kill all the fish.

If by "homeopathy" you mean "drink water" then yes, you should probably do that.

I try to engage in small doses of sarcasm each day to keep me from developing into a full-blown asshole. So far, mostly so good.

Oh, and cold calm. I'll see if I can dig up a pic.

My wife swears by a netti pot. But she's a professional vocalist: they do all sorts of shit to keep the instrument healthy, including abstaining from 80 percent of the food groups popular on p-f.

I can tell you what won't work to cure a cold- flying from PNG to Australia to LA to Orlando... while also having something bad going on in the gut.

I am also a believer in the neti pot. First sign of trouble and it comes out.

I tried a neti pot once and it did nothing for me. But then years ago my nose was broken in such a way that it spread out my facial bones and covered a good percentage of my nasal passages. I am truly a mouth breather because I can't get enough air through my nose to supply myself with oxygen when doing things like running, cardio, karate workouts, etc... For me colds really suck.

A thought regarding the neti (Nyeti?) pots, you said you're a paramedic...I'd use a saline flush as a field expedient version of same :D

The pot or the bottle? I've found the ability to force the water through to help a little more than natural flow.

Hell, maybe it wasn't even a neti pot per se -- it was a device that allowed me to force saline solution all the way up through my sinuses. It didn't fix the problem, which is when I went to a physician and found out just how bad the break to my nose had been.

You guys have me thinking I should try one (neti pot). Seems weird, but honestly, not even close to the other random weird stuff I do.

I use the squirt bottle "sinus rinse" version from NeilMed (same company as Neti pot). It works like magic.

For whatever reason, here in Ohio, it's perfectly fine to waste medical products on a solid prank...the medical director and your bosses will usually get a good laugh out of it, but if I use something for an "other than intended" medical purpose, that raises flags...unless that "other than intended" purpose is quick thinking that saves life or limb, then people pat you on the back.

Basically, if I use a flush for my own nose, I'll get written up, but if I use it to help someone or prank someone, I'm in the clear.

Same one I use. I also have some weird issues and am a mouth breather. Chronic Bronchitis, multiple severe nasal injuries, and huge adenoids, I need to run the squirt bottle. I hate it, but when I get sick (which always tends to turn into bronchitis) I end up blowing green aliens out of my sinuses with the thing.

The first time I used the bottle I almost threw up based on what I saw come out. It was like a sink full of salamanders.

If you prank spray it on someone, through your sinuses, I see a win-win situation.

Awesome.

My roomie uses the neti pots and sometimes I buy the refill packs for her while I'm at the grocery store. If they don't have a refill pack, I'll just grab one of the starter ones instead. As a result, we probably have a half dozen unused NeilMed squirt bottles around here. I'm going to waterboard myself tomorrow to see if I can gross myself out solely on the strength of your endorsement there. :D

I highly recommend doing this in the shower. I would have a tough time aiming to get it in the sink.

Colloidal Silver kills just about EVERYTHING. Including your friendly gut bacteria. So substitute acidophilus and lactobacillus (or eat yogurt). Use an eye dropper and take several *drops* under your tongue. Hold for 30 to 40 seconds then swallow. Use as often as you like. Several drops in a glass of whatever you're drinking; stir vigorously. Give it a minute and go. This is a daily thing for me. I just double up with the onset of any sickness. Usually, 12 to 24 hours and it's over.

Your gut bacteria is the core (pun intended) of your immune system so why not take a probiotic daily??

COLDCAM is a good addition if and when you do get a cold.

Haven't had a full lien cold in 10 years. I also supplement antioxidants daily, too (seed extracts or pycnogenols, A,C, E).

I suppose I need to be sick for maximum grossness, correct? This might have to wait until after SHOT next year.

He's not the first person to hint that the un-neti'ed have shit lurking in their sinuses beyond the ken of mortal man. I'm officially intrigued, now. My left nostril closes up in my sleep often enough that it wouldn't surprise me to wash out dead bugs and shit.

Is now about the time to segue into colonic cleansing?

Other than moving to more upscale containers (LOL), I do this today. My wife will make chicken soup with lots of herbs (love dill in my chicken soup) and freeze portions. When I get sick, I will cook egg noodles in chicken stock and add them to the soup. Seems to work better on colds than anything else.

I also waterboard myself when in Louisville as I am allergic to the whole city. Seriously allergies are horrible here. Good allergy doctors rarely accept new patients.

Think "surgical" waterboarding. Less water, more effective, yet equal mess.

You oughta see what comes out after some highway time on the bike or 20 miles of bicycle riding.

It's not been messy for me at all. Rather clean and simple actually. I do it at work all the time and no mess.

Same thing after using the grill or using the smoker to make BBQ. It is also what got me to start using a mask when working outdoors in dusty conditions.

After a really severe, long term sinus infection treated with antibiotics and Prednisone, I visited the head of ENT at Geisinger. Getting scoped was like having an African centipede crawling around in my skull.
My nose had been badly broken twice and I have a deviated septum.
He suggested Ayr, a mild saline mist, six times per day, and allergy testing and shots. I take Singulair at night.
My bride is a nurse and she gives me the weekly injections.
I have not had other than mild problems since.

When I start to feel a cold coming on I have 3 things that I do to kick its butt.

1. Water - I try to drink as much as I can. Usually 4 or 5 liters per day.
2. Vitamin C - Ascorbic acid - I take as much as I can. Usually 8 - 10 grams per day. Chew it up.
3. Hot green tea with honey - About 4 cups per day.

I can usually get rid of cold symptoms in about 2 days but I keep this regimen going for a full week. I've found that if I stop after symptoms leave then it can come back very quickly.
