Week 5: Sweet Sixteen
results may be posted until 11:59pm EDT on Monday 7-November-2011.

by Todd Louis Green
Range: varies
Target: 3x5 card
Start position: ready; standing unsupported
Rounds fired: 16

This is a variation of a classic walkback drill.

You get exactly sixteen rounds. You can begin with the target at any distance you choose.

Fire one round at the target.

hit: add one yard and repeat
miss: stay at same distance and repeat

Your score is the farthest target that you successfully hit.

If you miss three times at the same distance, the drill ends even if you still have ammunition remaining. E.g., if you miss your first shot at the 7yd line, then miss your second attempt at the 7yd line, and miss your third attempt at the 7yd line the drill is over even if you have only fired three rounds and scored no hits. This prevents someone from beginning at the 50yd line and hoping for one hit out of 16 shots.

If you don't miss, you'll end up 15yd farther than your first shot. E.g., if you start at the 5yd line and get all your hits, your last shot will be at the 20yd line.

For added adventure, you can repeat the drill SHO and WHO.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Starting distance
Distance of farthest successful hit

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

I had a brief window to shoot today, with no other expected practice opportunities for the rest of the week. While I intended to begin the DOW #5 "Sweet Sixteen" at 12 yds, it turns out the target was actually at 14 yards for the first shot. Using an M&P45 w/RMR02 I made first round hits at all distances until I missed on my first shots at both 26 & 27 yds, but hit with my second--unfortunately, I had used up my 16 shots so had to stop the drill with a successful hit at 27 yds.

An RDS on a pistol is extremely helpful for making precise shots, especially at longer distances; I have to continue to work on getting more rapid hits with RDS equipped pistols. Due to time restrictions, I only shot a single FAST drill today, getting a clean 5.93 sec with the M&P45 w/RMR, as well as running the DOW #4 Bill Drill in 13.94 sec clean and the DOW #2 "4567" drill in 16.88 sec clean. Total rounds fired today was 170.

Damn you and your fancy drills Todd!Q@#$

80% of your drills I can't do because there isn't a range anywhere near me that allows "rapid fire" or presenting from holsters. Then you finally give me a drill that doesn't require either of those, but I've got to fire one round then move the target back 1 yard.

My club's range is setup such that they call a cease fire every 10 minutes to allow people to change out their targets and we're typically talking about 3 minutes worth of cease-fire. This means that if I started at 5 yards and made it all the way to 15 yards two handed, it would take me a little over two hours to do that. If I did the same thing SHO and WHO, this one drill would take me 6 and a half hours to complete ... which is longer than my range is actually open on any one weekend day.

I hate you Todd. I hate you. Not really. Just sometimes. Like any time I read your blog. Which is every day.

Your friend,
Billy

Without derailing the thread, hopefully: We knew going into this that not every person would be able to shoot every drill. Unfortunately, for facilities that are strict and based on what is essentially a bullseye shooting model, anything outside of a bullseye drill is going to be difficult. If we did nothing but bullseye, the DotW would become pretty boring and not really cater to the majority on this forum. I know you were just joking and not upset, but I thought it was worth taking a moment to let folks know that the Staff is aware of the limitations many people have. Not everyone will be able to shoot every drill, and some folks may not be able to shoot more than one a month. Having said that, if the range you use prevents you from shooting at different distances, drawing from a holster, and shooting rapid fire... there's a pretty low ceiling on where your practical shooting skill level can go.

Shot today. Used my issued S&W 5946 to shoot it cold.
Started at 7m, missed my first shot at 19m, then got the hit at 19 and 20m, and missed with my last shot at 21m.

Started at 7m and made my last good hit at 20m. Possible max distance 22m

After the candidates finished their qualifications, I ran it again with my Gen4 G17.
Started again at 7m, missed my first shot at 13m (WTF?? lol) and then continued on to make good hits to 21m.

Started at 7m, made last good hit with last round at 21m. Possible max distance 22m

Doc, great shooting!!! Hitting the 3x5 at 27 yards is no small feat!

It is a LOT easier with an RDS than irons...almost like cheating!

Ran this drill today, though I did a couple of things slightly wrong.

I started at 9 yards, because the range I have access to goes out to 25 yards, thinking that if I ran it perfectly I would max out the distance on the shooting range and finish the drill without running out of distance. Except I did the math wrong - that would have needed me to start at 10 yards.

I only had time today to run it two handed, but hope to re-run it later SHO and WHO as well.

First hit: 9 yards
(1 miss at 24 yards, all the rest were hits)
Last hit 25 yards

The distance and number of shots don't add up right because I made a math error, as noted above, then also did not move the target out exactly one yard each time. The range doesn't have yardage markings every yard, so I had to eyeball it, and apparently moved the target out a little more than one yard with each hit, because I found myself at 24 yards with three shots left, missed one, hit the next shot at 24 yards, moved out to 25 yards, and hit with that shot and was out of ammo.

I was very happy with how I did. I really thought I would drop more shots sooner than I did.

Thank you Doc!

I forgot to specify the equipment used:

G34, stock, Ameriglo Defoor sights.

I am in the middle of typing a response for the newly-split Speed vs. Accuracy thread, and I have a couple of comments related to the competition thing that I'll put in there, rather than cluttering up this thread with them.

I sure wish I'd know this DotW on Sun as I went 5-5 on a 3x5 at 25 yds in 17.8 sec, and had a Minute to do it in. ( was trying the fist part of a dill that Tom Givens had students do with a NRA Bullseye )

15/16 hits. Started at 5 yards, dropped one round at 13 yards. Made it to 19 yards.

Gun: Ruger SR9c with XS Big Dot sights.

The XS sights made this drill really difficult because past 10 yards I was shooting the head box based pretty much on body index and guess work. The entire 3x5 card is subtended by the sights at 10+ yards.

Due to lack of yard markings I wasn't able to spread it accurately and the target carriage was at about 23 yards when I shot #16. I pushed it to 25 and shot 17, so the final result is 17/17, from about 9 to 25 yards, HK P30 LEM, factory tritium sights, 115 gr Blazer, two handed grip.

WTT: 5 yards of accuracy distance for reduction of anticipation error by half. LEM trigger is kicking my butt on first shot.

Done twice. Once with God's gift to man the 1911. Springfield milspec all stock. Started at 5 dropped one at 12 and another one at 18, hit 18.

Second time with gen 3 Glock 19 sevigny carry two dot sights, ny1/-, started at 10 missed one at 18, finished at 24. I believe all measurements are in yards.

So I cheated on my Glock with the sexy girl I met at the gun show, and it turns out I had it right to begin with. But, I did look damn sexy missing with the 1911.

Shot this today at my local indoor range with my M&P45 using loads making SSP Power Factor.
The Range is is marked for 7, 15, 20 and against the backstop is 25 yards. If you do the math it's evident that at times my 1 yard increments were lets say generous. Started at 7 yards and had my first miss low at 15 yards. Advanced out to the 22 yard line before I missed again and then it was 3 shots in a row. The 3rd miss was round 16. To be honest at 22 yards the target was in the shadow between the lights and the gray 3 x 5 box sort of disappeared and I had to guess where it was on the target. It seems my guesses were as good as my 1 yard advances. :o

I'll be honest, I didn't push this as far as I know I could have. I keep forgetting that my sights are a hybrid drive-the-dot/six o'clock hold, so I always tend to throw my shots high at distance. Or I just mash the trigger, as the two low misses show. :(

So this is the first chance to make it to the range in what seems like eternity, but was about 2 months.... I did last weeks Bill Drill, the dot torture and this weeks Sour Sixteen.

I shot with Glock 19, Big DOT sights, grip reduced and stippled by me...

I realized that I have grown very complacent in the terms of some things. I started this weeks drill at 3 yrds and made it to 14 yrds.
I do think the sights limited me passed the 10 yards.... I will attempt to repeat the drill with both my Duty weapon and a HK P30.... I will report back by monday...

note: paster below 3x5 is from bill drills earlier in the day.

Since moving from my Glock to my M&P with thumb safety for AIWB carry I struggle with groups(vertically) past 12 yds. With my Glock I would of felt confident starting this drill further back. I need to practice more past 15yds with my M&P. I really enjoy the Drill of the Week as it really helps to add variety to my practice and helps keep me from falling in a rut of the same drills over & over.

Tried to duplicate JV's mojo and failed. Tried today 2H beginning at 15yd. Dropped three in a row at 24yd and had to quit. I've got a new bright green-yellow (swear to God, they call it "chartreuse") front sight and literally couldn't tell the difference between the grey 3x5 box, buff background, and neon front sight anymore. In addition to having great trigger control, JV must have bionic eyeballs.

Shot it cold yesterday. Started at 10yrd, dropped three at 20yd using a Beretta 96D.

The wind was blowing so hard it blew the cardboard off the target stand and out of the range!! Then after I fastened it down good it just blew the target stand over!! Very frustrating.

Slightly upset at the 2H... I planned to max out at 25yds but dropped rounds at 14, 18, 22, 23. I feel I was overconfident and rushed my shots.
However, the SHO and WHO forced me to slow down and do a very sloooow press out, I am happy with the results. I found this drill very usefull, and afterward turned in same blazing fast (for me) hits to the 3x5 at 7yds.

Shot the DotW after shooting a FAST today.
Started at about 19 ended at 31, Missed once at 23 and twice at 30 last round was hit at 31yds. The 3x5 card is Really small at 30yds!!!!

Glock Gen4 G34 with Ameriglo Operator Pro sights 2 handed, ran out of time to try it WHO and SHO.

From looking at the target I may have to bump my sights just a bit as I'm shooting just a tad left.

31 yards, awesome Prdator! I was drilling with the AR today and grabbed a Glock just before it got too dark to see the sights. Got dark enough I had to go back an forth after every shot to see if I hit it or missed. Had to use a stick to mark my location. Last time I shot this pistol was Dec 2010. Couldn't ever really tell where it was zeroed but it seemed a little high.

G17, my reloads, 9 year old beat to hell Heinie straight eight night sights (not really)
2 Handed, started at 10yds, 1st miss was at 19yds. Last shot fired at 24, missed.

Started at 10 yards, missed 1 shot at ~ 12, ~ 20, ~ 25. Farthest successful shot was 25, the longest distance available in my indoor range.

I ended up with the gimp target carrier so getting the target to move 1 yard was **CENSORED** impossible as it would either overheat and stop altogether or just go whatever distance it wanted to go...so pretty much nothing between 20 and 25 yards was possible. I just had to jump from 20 to 25.

Shot with a Glock 17, Warren sights.

Not to derail the thread, but I find the same thing to be true for brightly colored front sights. I used to paint my front sights yellow....which works great on a black bull. When it came time for me to shoot at lighter targets like white steel plates I got an indecipherable blob up front and couldn't reliably get an accurate sight picture.

Ran it cold, this was my entire range session yesterday.
Started at 10 yards, made it out to 19 yards.

Firing Method: 2H
Start Distance: 8yds
Target: 3x5 Index Card
Pistol: HK45 stock gun and stock sights (forgot to bring 9mm for P30L, but I wasn't going to miss another week of these drills-I love them!)
Last distance: 23yds
Misses: 16yds and 21yds grrrr

Might post my video on Youtube later, b/c it's funny not being able to see if you've missed and watching me do wind sprints b/w many shots and my range was FLOODED! NJ Snowstorms baby!

While I realize some folks might not be taking exactly 36" steps in between targets, if you start a 5yd and have no misses the farthest you can go is 20 yards. That's sixteen shots, starting at five and ending at twenty. If you start at 5yd and have two misses, then you got at best 18yd.

EmanP

Opps, thanks for pointing out my faulty math. It would have been 22 yards for me then.

BaiHu
11-05-2011, 05:28 PM
In my case, Todd, I didn't see my shot missed until I had completed a step back and 'had a hunch' and my steps were obviously bigger than 36". Lastly, I only measured the first 8 yds and then the last shot (my club's pistol range is 25 yds max) and then subtracted 2 yds from my score. 8 yds to 25 yds minus 2 misses=23 yds. I feel the future of pistol ranges having stripes on them like a football field-LOL! I'm in if we can get scantily clad pistol cheerleaders!

Any takers?

Last shot (16th round) successful hit at 21yds

Very impressed with a number of my students, many of whom hadn't been out since my last class 6 weeks ago. One in particular, Cheryl, all 100lbs (if that), made it to 17yds from 5yd start. Using an HK P2000, all shots DA only. And that trigger sucks huge.

started at 8 yards, ran out of bullets at 19.

given how awful I am at distance shooting I was actually pleased with this.

still getting used to this 6 oclock hold at distance with this gun/ammo/sight combo. G17, 124grn handloads, defoor sights.

after the drill was over I put a fresh card at 20 yards, and after about 4 misses I figured out where to hold and put 4 or 5 shots on the card. which had me tickled.

I started at 10 yards and unfortunately only made it to 20. For some reason I decided to use a new type of ammo when I did this drill without testing POA/POI. The ammo turned out to have more of a drive the dot then a 6:00 hold, so I had a low miss each at 12 (:() and 18 yards, as well as 2 misses at 21 yards which brought me to 16 rounds total.

Looks like I still have plenty of things to work on ;)

This was pretty much the last thing I did before leaving the range. Only 15 shots with the M&P9, as I forgot it was a 16 shot drill. Would have given it another go with the M&P at a higher/longer starting distance if I had more time.
