Week 166: Five Tries

Results may be posted until June 27th, 2016.

Designed by: Gabe White
Range: Shooter's choice, see below
Target: Shooter's choice, see below
Start Position: Holstered or ready, see below
Rounds Fired: Up to 5

This is a challenge drill. Shooter picks the target, distance, and start position (holstered or ready.) There is no time limit and the drill is shot freestyle. The shooter gets five shots/attempts to hit their choice of target at their choice of distance. Pick a shot that is challenging, but makeable. You could shoot a piece of string at 25 yards, or something else creative.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Gun, holster and concealment (optional), or ready position start
Target
Distance
Hit or miss
Total number of rounds fired
Observations: anything you noticed

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

G17 rtf2 under a t shirt. Dark star gear aiwb

2" circle
15 yards
Hit
3rd shot

Glock 43
Low ready
2" circle
15 yards
Hit
5th shot

I wasn't motivated to shoot anything incredibly hard, or shooting particularly good today, so i just picked something i find challenging but within my ability. I attempted it at 25 as well but never made it.

Thought I'd try to cut a playing card in half. Stapled it vertically to the tip of a 1x2 in the target stand, stood facing the edge. I needed two shots to get a hit at 3 yards and 5 yards. Failed at 7 yards...of course I kept shooting, got it on the eighth shot. The card was basically invisible, had to aim using the 1x2 for visual reference...I think it'd be way easier if I took a half step sideways so I could see the card, haven't decided yet if that'd be cheating. :) Shot with a Glock 17 Gen 4.

Fun drill, I think this'll become a staple, at least until I finish off the deck. Each time I'll start at the last distance I've succeeded at and move back if I get a hit in 5.

I tried five shots on an IDPA practice target at 100 yards. I wanted to stay in the -0 or -1 area.

I used a Gen4 G19 from the ready. Ammo was 124-grain S&B FMJ.

http://i.imgur.com/IhNMI8n.jpg

On the first target, I held for the chin, fired five shots, and got three hits along the right edge of the paper. This attempt was a fail.

On the second target, I held for the left shoulder, fired five shots, and got five hits. This attempt (shown here) was a pass.

After I shot the second target, I fired two more rounds into the first target using the hold I had used on the second target. Those bullets landed closer to the center of the paper.

Total number of rounds fired: 12

Observations: This pistol is zeroed for a 147-grain JHP. The S&B load consistently hits 2-3" to the right at 25 yards, so having to use Kentucky windage on the second target makes sense. The 147-grain load groups better than the 124-grain S&B load, but it drops a lot more at 100 yards, and probably would not have been on the paper with the same hold.

Guess I'll have to do something else besides playing cards now

Nah, you just gotta do it at 10 yards. :)

Lol. Gonna need to change the drill to 50 tries.

Per Ed McGivern, the trick to splitting cards is to shoot them at a slight angle, so they're about the same width as the front sight. It's far harder if you shoot edge-on.

P320 production gun/gear.

Didn't have playing cards so I used index cards.

First attempt:

Draw and shoot card in half in less than 2 seconds from the holster.

FAIL! all shots in time but just couldn't do it. Card moved every shot.

Left blue twice! Just couldn't get it.
More blue on other side too

Got to the range and decided to try and cut a string. But me got no string. Ah but there is some 550 cord among all the "KIT" ( ;) ) in my truck.

FACT: 550 cord is amazingly hard to cut with FMJ slugs.

Distance: 10 yards

G19 - got it on 4th shot first run

1911 - got it on forth shot second run

G19 - got it on 2nd shot third run

I think the following is proof of the old saying about a blind squirrel getting lucky once in a while.

Gen 3 Glock 22 with 9mm conversion from the ready gun
Target: 3x5 card on edge
Distance: 3 yards
Hit or miss: Surprisingly hit and cut card in two on 5th shot
Total number of rounds fired: 5
Observations: Way things were going today I just got lucky.
