My experience with AR rifles is limited to iron sights and red dots, so I am in need of some advice. I was able to pick up the Steiner 1x4 rapid dot on clearance at euro optic for $700. It is my first low powered variable to put on my rifle, so I am a bit lost on which mount to use for it.

I have read nothing but good things about the nightforce unimounts, but Euro optic and midway have multiple sizes, so I don't know which to buy. The rifle is a KMR BCM if that helps any.

This link shows all of the various options of different sizes for mounts. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks in advance.

Just to be clear, what are the differences between the 1.5, 1.375, and 1.125 listed on what appears to be otherwise identical mounts? Will my scope work fine with all of them and it is just preference, or will I need a certain size to make it work?

And here is the scope in question.

I went with the milspec 1.5"

The "sizes" you're referring to is the height at which the mount will hold the scope. Choose a height which is comfortable for you. I don't recall which height iron sights are, but that is the most common height and should make a good reference point.

Your scope should work with any of the heights offered. The 0 moa mount will likely be a better match for a 1-4 variable than the 20 moa mount

Thanks to both of you for responding to a question that I know seems kind of dumb. The iron sight height is exactly the kind of reference i am looking for - thanks. Do you both agree the nightforce unimounts are good to go? And mistwolf, you think 20moa is not necessary on a 1 - 4 scope? Would you mind explaining why? This will just be a general use carbine and not anything specialized for distance shooting if that helps you to answer. Thanks again.

Edit: I did a quick google search and found someone advising that 20moa mounts are really only beneficial past 600 yards. I definitely don't see me taking a 556 beyond 600 anytime soon.

The Unimount is my hands down favorite mount for AR's. Definitely don't get the 20 moa.

If you are not going to use a clip on in front of it, then get whatever height you would prefer. Usually lower is better, but that is a personal preference for what you are doing. I prefer the 1.5 for most applications.

These numbers represent the height of the rings above the rail. The 1.375 will put the center of the scope at the same height as iron sights, a co-witness height. I put this height NF unimount on my DD5V1 with a NF SHV 4-14x50 F1 scope. I wanted the 2.5" height above bore and I needed this height for the objective to clear the rail. You may want the 1.125 if that does not put the eyepiece of the Steiner 1x4 rapid dot too close to the rail. I did get the 20 MOA base as I wanted to shoot, "to infinity and beyond", 600-800 plus yards.

Thanks for the additional responses. Exactly what I was looking for on the forum! One last dumb question: my scope is 30mm, does it matter if the scope mount is 30mm or 34mm? I will be going with a 0 MOA nightforce unimount for sure, the last and only question to decide before I order is if I need to stick with 30 mm in the mount since that is what my scope is.

You need the 30mm mount.
You will have to get a 20mm bias. It won't matter. Forget it's even there.
I would strongly urge the 1.5 if you run n gun, which your choice in optics seems to indicate , and no lower than the 1.375 unless your face is shaped strangely, or this is going on a non-AR platform.

The NF mounts are an excellent choice, but expensive. I'm using an Aero Precision light weight mount on a 308 AR. It cost me less than $100 out the door and it works well. Light weight, rugged, affordable, easy to install. I don't think they are available in different heights, but are a solid, economical mount for how you intend to use your AR

At least on the euro optic site, the only 30mm rail with a 0 MOA cant does not have a 1.5 inch height. If all of the other sites are like this, then I will have to go with either a 20 MOA cant or a shorter height like the 1.375.

This is the only nightforce unimount with the 0 moa rail for 30mm tubes I could find on either midway or euro optics is this:
