Please read the rules (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1837-Drill-of-the-Week) before participating in this thread.

Week 4: Bill Drill
results may be posted until 11:59pm EDT on Monday 31-October-2011.

attributed variously to Bill Jordan, Bill Rogers, and Bill Wilson
Range: 7yd
Target: IPSC A-zone, IDPA -0 zone, or 8" circle
Start position: holstered
Rounds fired: 5 strings of 6 shots each

You will need a shot timer for this DotW. Actually, you'll need a shot timer for most DotWs so if you don't have one, either buy one or at least download one onto your smartphone.

Very easy drill this week. Draw and fire six rounds at the target. Record your time. Repeat for a total of five runs (30 rounds).

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Target used
Start position (open, concealed, retention holster)
Number of hits out of 30
Total time

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

For those of you in need of targets for the Week 4 drill, keep in mind that the outer border of the 8 ring on the NRA B8 25 yd pistol target (http://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=57&d=1306683559) used in the pistol-forum.com Week 1 DOW is an 8" circle, as is the circle on the FAST drill target (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/fast-target.pdf)...

Shot it today with my Gen4 G17, Ameriglo Defoor sights, Blade-tech holster, open carry, and Winchester Super Unleaded 147gr ammo. Used a NASS target (4, 6, and 8" circles with a 4" square).

Score - 30/30 (all but 3 rounds were touching or within the 6" circle)
Total time - 14.8 seconds

http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/5674/photo5cv.jpg

For shooting from open carry, my first shots were dog slow... 1.67, 1.68, 1.67, 1.87, and 1.54 for the 5 runs. Time for each 6 shot string ran from a high to 3.25 to a low of 2.60.

HKP30 V3 Heinie Straight Eight Qwik... from concealment. 28/30

3.50 = 1.88/.38/.38/.28/.29/.29
3.48 = 1.92/.35/.33/.35/.32/.28
3.51 = 1.90/.33/.33/.32/.33/.30
3.47 = 1.94/.35/.32/.28/.30/.28
3.48 = 2.01/.44/.30/.26/.23/.24

17.44 sec... words can not describe how frustrating this range session was. My time to first hit from concealment should have been clocked with a sun dial and my splits were underwhelming. I was on the front sight and it was all I could do to keep them in the 8" circle. I do remember being very tense during the press outs and struggling to push the sight on to the huge circle. Although I feel my time should have been much faster I at least managed to get 28 hits at what was full speed for me today. I didn't lose the FS durring the splits but it was just in slow motion. This will certainly be shot many more times in the following days....

It would be nice if you used your issued pistol. Must be nice... Almost as bad as your partner in crime on the west coast.

What must be nice? That I went out and spent a bunch of money for a gun (as well as holsters, mag pouches, mags, etc) that I use for the occasional match that I can get to, and I use it to practice when I can? It would also be nice if I had an extra 2" on the end of my dick. But I don't.

If it makes you feel any better, today I also shot two courses of fire for work, with my issue pistol, as well as a few other drills. I just didn't do the DotW.

150/150 with 17 x on one CoF with the 5946.
250/250 with 23 x on the other with the 5946.

shot this drill for the first time tonight with JConn.

glock 17
reloads- 124 grn Montana gold
shaggy AIWB, concealed with untucked polo

we used a bunch of the NRA B8 target pdf's from DotW 1. to make certain we were getting all our rounds on paper, we put up a fresh target for every run. copy machines love me.

3.79 -1
3.61 clean
3.59 -1
3.70 clean
3.77 -1

final time 18.46
27/30

I ran it twice more, trying to replicate the cleanliness of runs 2 and 4, but failed.
3.64 -1
3.61 -1

as mentioned I had never done this drill before, and have only owned a shot timer for 4 days. I believe I will make this drill a part of every range trip.

I bet I can perform better using the Q-PT target, as when shooting fast I personally seem to perform better using a big gray circle on a huge piece of paper vs. a small black circle on a much smaller piece of paper.
actually, the same with shooting index cards. I shoot far more accurately at the head box on a Q-PT than an index card stapled to cardboard. maybe the gray color is more conducive for some reason? It has to be purely mental in any case.

also, I want to try again at my usual range, which has far superior lighting to the location we shot at tonight.

So, lots of fun this week. This is the first time I have done timed rapid fire drills, so be easy. So, these things don't change. I used the target from the week 1 challenge, and I shot from concealment strong side under a long sleeve t-shirt. Firearm used was Gen 3 G19 w/ warren sevigny carry two dot sights. So first time, I didn't do so hot, mainly because I wasn't really using my sights.
3.70 -2
3.40 -2
3.37 -5
3.86 -1
3.62 -1
Grand total = 17.95 19/30

So, decided to make sure I used my sights and focused more on proper stance and round two happened.

3.59 clean
3.51 clean
3.66 -2
3.58 -1
3.34 -1
Grand total = 17.68 26/30

Now if I can just do a proper press out. This was the final Bill drill.

edit - that was by far my best group, but it made me happy. This drill will now be done at least a few times every week..

Times:

2.78
2.54 -1

Total: 13.70 29/30

Tomorrow I'm gonna shoot it with my duty gun and gear and then off duty gun and gear.

It would be nice if you used your issued pistol.

Just for you.

Shot today with issued S&W 5946 DAO, Gould & Goodrich leather thumb break holster, open carry, and Winchester Super Unleaded 147gr ammo.

Score - 29/30 Blew the one shot during the last string. Pretty sure it was first round during the press out, I was trying to speed up the draw and first shot.
Total time - 14.7 seconds

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3979/photozre.jpg

First shots were fired at 1.81, 1.89, 1.75, 1.62, 1.59, and total time for each string was 3.14, 3.19, 2.95, 2.76, 2.66.

I've got a big problem with consistency, my runs were between 3.41 and 4.72. I think it's basically a question of confidence. All my first shots were under 2s, so that's nice. =)

I did this drill a bunch of times yesterday and today. The results were all pretty similar, though this was the best run by a very little bit. The lighting wasn't great, and between that and attentional lapses, there were a few moments where I wasn't noticing the front sight like I wanted to. I've been running plain black sights lately. Maybe I should try it again with sights with a more high visibility front and see if it makes any difference for me on this drill. It's still a feat of mental discipline for me to track the sights regardless of what the sights look like. In any case...

I ran this on an IPSC target, with delusions of confining myself to the upper half of the A zone. Didn't keep them that tight, but at least I didn't put any in the really really low part of the A zone.

Concealed with a closed-front t-shirt, AIWB, hands hanging naturally at sides, Gen3 G34, stock except the mag catch and Ameriglo Defoor sights.

26/30 hits (87%)

Total time was 9.80 seconds

String 1: .93 first shot/1.96 total/1 out
String 2: .99 first shot/2.00 total/1 out
String 3: 1.03 first shot/2.04 total/1 out
String 4: .95 first shot/1.93 total/1 out
String 5: .90 first shot/1.87 total/clean

The timer was picking up echoes mid-string, so I didn't bother with the split times, but they ranged from .15 to .25.

Those runs are pretty typical for me. I usually get it done just under or just over 2 seconds, and very often drop one shot, sometimes two, and sometimes clean.

I used a Gen 3 G19 w/RMR02 today to fire 315 rounds. All shots were fired from concealed carry using a Fricke Gideon holster covered with a vest. Started the day with a successful cold run of the Defoor Pistol test #3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wugfoKJ0-fA&feature=related). Ran a couple of FAST drills, including my all time best clean FAST score of 5.77 sec using a G19 w/RDS. Then I ran the DOW #4 Bill Drill several times; the best clean run was a 15.07 sec on the FAST target 8" circle. 225
I was curious if a pistol with a better trigger would make any difference, so I also ran the test once with a LAV customized SA 1911 sporting an XS Big Dot front sight and wide notch rear sight drawn from an Alessi AIWB holster--got 14.87 sec, but missed with 2 shots. Went back to the G19 and finished the day with a 459 score on the 500 pt aggregate drill. Today's results yet again reinforced that a Glock trigger (Glock "-" connector and stock trigger return spring) is no hindrance to accurate and rapid practical shooting. It also proved the viability of an RDS equipped pistol for both long range accuracy, as well as close range speed work.

Folks, while it is fine, good, and even necessary to push yourself in practice to see how fast you can shoot, when taking a shooting TEST for time and score it is important to go at a pace that allows you to accurately make hits--that whole balance of speed and accuracy thing. Imagine yourself as a member of a team, organization, or unit where you get KICKED OFF if you miss a shot during training. More vividly, think about being in a life and death struggle where if your shots miss, they strike an innocent person, perhaps a loved family member...

Basically think about situations where a MISS is an utter FAIL.

For those of you who went out blazing and turned in awesome times with misses, how about trying it again to see how fast you can go with 100% hits?

I can't speak for others, and my times were no where near awesome, but for me this was pretty much exploratory. Since it was new I just wanted to see what it was like. I will try to do it again if I can make it to the range again this week, but I am past my weekly 9mm allowance. As this drill becomes a regular, of course 100% hits is the goal instead of raw speed.

wicked_police

...how about trying it again to see how fast you can go with 100% hits?

I think because (and not saying it's the case here...) some people are more impressed with being blazing fast and getting an 'acceptable' number of hits.

I try not to put too much emphasis on speed, unless I'm doing a drill that specifically calls for it. And even then, if I'm not getting enough hits on what I'm shooting at (3x5 card, 8" circle, qualification target, etc), I know I have to slow down.

Pennzoil--We are all going to have occasional misses, it means we are pushing the envelope, which is a good thing to do in practice. The problem occurs when folks think it is OK to routinely miss and they do not ever find that balance between speed and accuracy that allows them to shoot a drill cleanly. I guess it is time to pull out the old chestnut: speed is fine, but accuracy is final.

Nice OrigamiAK. Question, what are you doing with your left hand when it reaches the top of it's movement? Gathering cloth with your fingers to ensure it's clear? It looks like it's moving so fast that the camera can't keep up with the movement.

I notice that too. It's a movement I didn't consciously know I was making until I reviewed this and other recent videos. It may be hard to see, but I am sure I am not moving too fast for the camera.

It came about unconsciously, and I think what I am doing is unhooking my support/left hand from the shirt so the shirt doesn't enter the two hand grip when the hands join, as well as keeping the shirt from falling onto the top of the gun and tangling things that way.

That's what I think I am doing.

30/30, total time 10.76
average draw: 1.22 seconds
average split: 0.19 seconds
from CCC Shaggy aiwb under a half-zip fleece

I then spent a few magazines working on sub-second one shot draws to get a little more tuned to the press-out when going fast, and tried some balls to the wall runs. On the first four of these five, I never took my eyes off the target. On the last run, I purposely tried to use my sights:

2.03 one miss: 1.14, .20, .18, .15, .19, .17
1.95 one miss: 1.05, .19, .19, .17, .18, .17
1.84 two misses: 1.04, .16, .17, .15, .15, .17
1.91 one miss: 1.09, .16, .17, .17, .15, .17
1.98 clean: 1.12, .18, .18, .16, .18, .16

25/30, total time 9.71
average draw: 1.09 seconds
average split: 0.17 seconds
from CCC Shaggy aiwb under a half-zip fleece

If you look at the numbers, it means that I actually get five hits in about the same amount of time whether I fire five at a strong pace or six at a crazy pace. Which makes more sense?

I've GOT to work the pressouts and faster pickup of the front sight. Once the gun was out and the first shot down range, I could maintain good hits at a good pace - average of .20 splits but the lag cost me overall time.

Rounds fired: 5 strings of 6 shots each

Apparently, I'm an overachiever and fired six runs of six rounds. That would be 32/36. If I drop the last run off run it gets me:

Total Time: 12.90
Hits: 27/30

Just remember, there's three kinds of people in the world - those who can do math and those who can't.

I ran out to the range for a quick trip after work this afternoon and shot this one. I used an IDPA target, open carry with a Comp-tac paddle holster, and my Glock Gen 4 17. I shot it cold( both figuratively and literally as it was 38 degrees when I got to the range). I went with a mental goal of shooting it clean under 12.50 seconds. Well, I failed on both counts.

I started conservatively but clean. On the 2nd run I pushed it and dropped a couple of shots. On the 4th run I pulled another shot so I decided to slow down and really focus for the final run. I shot that run clean and it ended up being my fastest run too.

I spent the next 20 rounds working on draws. I only managed to break 1 second once (0.96). I got stuck between 1.01 and 1.11

I have been neglecting my draws from concealment and it showed. On a positive note, later in the session I ran two repetitions of one round to the A-zone from concealment at 25-yards. Two hits; the first in 1.64, the second in 1.59. Pretty satisfied with that.
