Police cadet in critical condition after shooting

APOLEON — The victim of an “assumed accidental shooting” at a city firing range Tuesday evening is expected to survive, according to Henry County Sheriff Michael Bodenbender.

The unidentified male victim is in critical condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center after being shot in the back Tuesday night. He was transported by helicopter from Henry County Hospital.

“There were at least three firearms instructors there. My understanding is they were on break during the time it happened,” Mr. Bodenbender said. “All the indications we have is that it was an accident. We have not spoken to the victim yet. But the rest of the cadets and instructors that were there, that’s the impression that we got -- that it was an accident.”

The victim was training with the Northwest State Law Enforcement Academy about 8:17 p.m. Tuesday in Napoleon when he was shot in the back by another male student. The shooter was either cleaning or oiling his gun, according to Mr. Bodenbender, and thought the firearm was empty when it discharged, striking the victim who was sitting at a picnic table.

No charges are expected to be filed.

“[The shooter] was very, very, very emotional and upset,” Mr. Bodenbender said. “He was very distraught.”

The victim was shot with a 9 millimeter handgun.

The two quotes above indicate someone was playing with their gun when and where they shouldn't have. IME "cleaning / oiling the gun" is usually code for screwing around (or suicide).

Our local PD recently had a Firearms Instructor (FI) injured while training academy cadets. A female cadet holstered with her finger on the trigger, sending a round into the concrete. The round ricocheted off the concrete, striking the FI in the abdomen. The FI is OK.
