Whilst idling Sunday night away, I discovered comiXology (https://www.comixology.com/), and had either a minor seizure, or a nerdgasm, I'm not sure which. Marvel comics, especially X-Men, are the only comic book titles I've ever sat down and read (Marvel has their own digital service (http://marvel.com/comics/unlimited); $10 a month, all you can read).

I had always wanted to read a wider variety of comics, but the time and effort (...and money) of tracking down the actual books, and filling in the various holes in the story, were enough to keep me from doing it. So now that there is easy access to a huge number of books, I'm curious: what are y'all's favorite titles, characters, and story arcs?

ETA: I read "Black Powder, Red Earth (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UHKNCS/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?ie=UTF8&btkr=1)", which was amazeballs (and ironically, not available on comiXology). I got "The Activity" last night, and it's a little 'meh' at the moment, but maybe it picks up.

From childhood until now The Punisher series has been my favorite. The recent Mitch Gerads run was a really good series and I think he did Frank Castle justice. Mitch Gerads also does "The Activity" and "Sheriff of Babylon" too, which are titles I think folks here would enjoy. I've also been getting into "Thief of Thieves". Preacher and Deadpool are characters I enjoy too but don't regularly follow. The best part about comics is going to a shop, browsing the racks, and finding odd and interesting new stories to read.

My colleague is a big comic nerd. I admit, growing up I wasn't much into comic books, but these days I like them more than I used to. I also admit that like guns, I'm kind of a comic book hipster - For the most part I prefer independent labels over mainstream Marvel/DC exceptions being Batman, Deadpool, Jonah Hex.

Some favorites:

Frank Miller's Dark Knight Rises
Judge Dredd
Jonah Hex
The Last of Us
Deadpool
The Vigilante
The Shadow
The Phantom

Lately, I've been reading a new series Devolution which is okay. But also I've been getting into The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I too have a comiXology account and my subscriptions right now are for Borderlands The Fall of Fyrestone, The Shadow Vol. 2, DeVolution, Judge Dredd.

The only monthlies I've ever bought were a particular Star Wars title many years ago so I can't say I'm big into comics.

Favorite is hands down Preacher, which AMC is adapting right now. Not sure how I feel about that but I'm interested.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is pretty twisted and I love the art

When I was in high school I loved shit like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Lenore. Less so these days now that I'm a grownup (allegedly) but they're still pretty fun.

Only recent one I've read is "The White Donkey", by the guy who does Terminal Lance (any recent prior service guys ought to be familiar and if you're not, you're wrong). TWD was not exactly what I expected, but I would recommend it. Particularly to those who are close to veterans.

Huh! I always kinda liked Donald Duck. Huey, Dewey and Louie were good too.

I preferred the Warner cartoons, Bugs and Road Runner, etc. Pepe la Pew cracked up my Mother so bad she feared being thrown out of the theater.
Pinky and the Brain were great.

The back of Tarzan comic books had a series of underground kingdom adventures I liked better than the main Tarzan story.

Current computer comics, I follow Schlock Mercenary, Girl Genius, Freefall, and Day by Day.

I'm rather fond of DC's stand alone books- it's difficult and expensive to follow anything here on a regular basis.
I love some of the classic Batman books, such as Miller's "Dark Knight Returns" and Moore's "Killing Joke".
Waid and Ross's "Kingdom Come" is perhaps one of my absolute all time favorites. Alex Ross is one of the best artist around, and the story matches the art in that book.
His "Justice" book is also pretty cool.
"Superman- Red Son", where Superman's ship lands in the 1930's Ukraine is pretty interesting.

Outside of the DCU, I'm rather fond of "Transmetropolitan". Appeals to the Hunter S Thompson fan in me.

Here are two favorites that maybe few of you know about.

Corto Maltese: one example: http://www.amazon.com/Corto-Maltese-Under-Sign-Capricorn/dp/1631400657/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1459801289&sr=1-2&keywords=corto+maltese

Lieutenant Blueberry: a sort of hard bit western; example: http://www.amazon.com/Lieutenant-Blueberry-Mine-Lallemand-Perdu/dp/B00TR6MXFS/ref=sr_1_17?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1459801396&sr=1-17&keywords=lieutenant+blueberry

I got "The Activity" last night, and it's a little 'meh' at the moment, but maybe it picks up.

The Activity is okay. Nathan Edmondson seems to actually understand the difference between USASOC, SF and SOF...so his ability to decipher the alphabet soup of the US military lends his stories an air of authenticity that some other authors lack. On the other hand, I've found the plot of The Activity somewhat convoluted and hard to follow at times. Still, an entertaining read.

Edmondson has gone on to author some recent arcs of Black Widow and The Punisher that I've found entertaining. But in my opinion, his best work is the Jake Ellis series (hence my avatar and sig line). Start with Who is Jake Ellis? (https://www.comixology.com/Who-Is-Jake-Ellis-Vol-1/digital-comic/16258?ref=c2VyaWVzL3ZpZXcvZGVza3RvcC9ncmlkTGlzdC9D b2xsZWN0ZWRFZGl0aW9ucw) I understand that the movie adaptation is on the way, but in the interim, these are some of the best comics I've read in recent years. Think "Fight Club" meets "The Bourne Identity".

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/S/cmx-images-prod/Item/16258/AUG110457_2._SX640_QL80_TTD_.jpg

Last, I grew up on a steady diet of GI Joe. The series has been rebooted a few times now, and unfortunately with mixed results. But I highly recommend checking out the GI JOE: COBRA (https://www.comixology.com/G-I-Joe-Cobra-The-Last-Laugh/digital-comic/35292?ref=c2VhcmNoL2luZGV4L2Rlc2t0b3Avc2xpZGVyTGlz dC9pdGVtU2xpZGVy) series. Not a GI Joe story for kids.

Welp, I'm down $250 and counting. Now, my SO's into it, and she bought a subscription to Marvel Unlimited, so there's that too. Also, a friend pointed me at this website (http://www.comicbookherald.com/the-complete-marvel-reading-order-guide/), which lists the reading order of all Marvel comics from about 1994 onwards, so you can keep up with their complicated crossovers.

Productivity has dropped precipitously, and I'm okay with that.

Stopped by the local comic shop yesterday with a friend. I decided to try Marvel's Red Wolf and Darkhorse's Hellboy and the B.R.P.D. 1953 - Picking up issues 1 and 2 of each. I liked them all! I have a preference for Hellboy over Red Wolf so far. Of course, I admit a die-hard love of Hellboy, overall.

TWD was not exactly what I expected, but I would recommend it. Particularly to those who are close to veterans.Only had to wait about 3 years for The White Donkey. I won't say it was well worth the wait, but it was pretty damn good.

Watchman deserved the accolades it got, even if the movie was pretty meh.

Preacher was pretty entertaining, but also pretty mindless; same with Y: The Last Man. The Sandman was pretty damn good, though.

I still need to finish Neon Genesis Evangelion, have just the last book left, sitting in my storage room.

I used to be into some older marvel comics, mostly X-Men. My wife is really into comics but none that I had ever heard of (which isn't saying much; haven't read any for +10 years) like Sandman, Saga, American Vampire, Fight Club 2, 100 Bullets and DMZ. Neil Gaiman writes a few that seem cool that I just haven't gotten around to checking out because I'm stuck in another book series. If anyone here is looking for something new I'd recommend DMZ and 100 Bullets.

As a kid, GI Combat and Weird War Tales.

A few decades later...some already mentioned, and...

I liked "The Boys", written by the same guy that did "Preacher."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boys_(comics)

The Boys is an American creator-owned comic book series, written by Garth Ennis and co-created, designed and illustrated by Darick Robertson. It was originally published by Wildstorm before moving to Dynamite Entertainment.

The series is set between 2006–2008[1] in a world where superheroes exist. However, most of the superheroes in the series' universe are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. For this reason, a superpowered CIA squad, known informally as "The Boys", is charged with monitoring the superhero community; the name is Butcher's contribution, a reference from his neighborhood that those in power would send "the boys" to handle anyone causing trouble.

In a box at a con I once found a collection of comics Eisner did when the Army sent him to Viet Nam. Still kick myself for saving the money to spend on beer...

Also, do hardcopy compilations of webcomics count? Because if they do, then Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/) and Schlock Mercenary (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/) definitely belong on the list.

For me, it's been a mix of Deadpool, Star Wars, Justice League, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain, not Barbara Gordon or Stephanie Brown), Batman, Nightwing, Red Robin, some Wonder Woman, older Men In Black comics, and some manga such as Yu Yu Hakusho and Ranma 1/2 when I was younger.

I revisit Watchmen from time to time - definitely a classic. Made Time Magazine's list of All-TIME 100 Novels (http://entertainment.time.com/2005/10/16/all-time-100-novels/slide/watchmen-1986-by-alan-moore-dave-gibbons/).

If you ever run across a copy, I really enjoyed Black Widow: Homecoming (http://marvel.com/comics/collection/1844/black_widow_homecoming_trade_paperback). Best take on the character yet - but probably too violent to be adapted for a MCU film. Written by Richard K. Morgan (who wrote Altered Carbon (http://www.amazon.com/Altered-Carbon-Takeshi-Kovacs-Novels/dp/0345457684) if ultra-violent, hard core sci-fi is your thing). I love me some Black Widow. To be honest, I have a bit of an Amazon fetish in that I have a thing for strong, capable women who can handle themselves (provided they're portrayed in a believable manner). Personally speaking, I've been the whole knight in shining armor bit before and found that I just plain don't have the time or ability to be there to save the day at a moment's notice and I like the idea of a woman who can look after herself without me having to step in on her behalf (I once dated a woman who was the type where when people asked me what I'd do if some lowlife decided to not take a hint and my response was "take bets on which of his limbs she breaks first").

I've been heavy into Judge Dredd recently. I realized I could order from Amazon UK and have stuff shipped to the States. The character has been around for about 40 years and has been through 40 years of continuity. Unlike other comic characters, he has aged in real-time and has been through 40 years of changes. Definitely not the stereotype most people have of this character.

I also enjoy Eric Powell's The Goon

Mike Mignola's Hellboy (and the rest of the Mignolaverse)

Daredevil: Born Again (written by Frank Miller),

100 Bullets

Preacher

Top Ten (Alan Moore does Hill Street Blues in a world where everyone has super powers)

Ed Brubaker's run on Daredevil and Captain America are great too.

There are a lot of good books out there. I've been reading comics for 25 years now and the past 15 years have seen some of the best writing in the medium yet.

Just updating as I read.

Red Wolf #3 and #4 - Meh. I'm done with this series, too slow and boring so far. My hunt for a decent western continues. To that end, I've just ordered the first compilation volume of East of West and added it to my subscription list. I've read a lot of good things about it, so I decided to give it a try.

Hellboy and the B.R.P.D. continues to deliver, decided to add B.R.P.D. in Hell to my subscription list. FYI - For the Browncoat and Hellboy fans. The Dark Horse Free Comic Day comic is a Serenity/Hellboy mashup. I've already put it on my list for my comic shop to pull me a copy.

An impulse grab is Gwenpool, just out in issue #1, previous appearances in Howard the Duck. It's great! Really enjoyed it! I recommend it! I immediately added Gwenpool to my subscription list.

I'm also working my way through 'Preacher (https://www.comixology.com/Preacher-Book-One/digital-comic/50783)', which is excellent thus far. I gave up on 'The Activity': no where near as grounded as 'Black Powder, Red Earth', and I had a hard time following what was going on in many cases.

I'm speechless.

That's a really challenging endeavor. I wish them well, but man, that's a hard story to adapt. So much of the story takes place in Kovacs' head. Not to mention the fact that as the series progresses you'll need multiple actors to play him as he is resleeved (though if done well, could really be something that sets the series apart). Still, I'm glad someone is trying this vice rebooting the next superhero franchise.

So far Darwyn Cooke has adapted The Hunter (https://www.comixology.com/Richard-Starks-Parker-Vol-1-The-Hunter/digital-comic/15790?ref=c2VhcmNoL2luZGV4L2Rlc2t0b3Avc2xpZGVyTGlz dC9pdGVtU2xpZGVy), The Outfit (https://www.comixology.com/Richard-Starks-Parker-Vol-2-The-Outfit/digital-comic/15734?ref=c2VhcmNoL2luZGV4L2Rlc2t0b3Avc2xpZGVyTGlz dC9pdGVtU2xpZGVy), The Score (https://www.comixology.com/Richard-Starks-Parker-Vol-3-The-Score/digital-comic/28082?ref=c2VhcmNoL2luZGV4L2Rlc2t0b3Avc2xpZGVyTGlz dC9pdGVtU2xpZGVy)and Slayground (https://www.comixology.com/Richard-Starks-Parker-Vol-4-Slayground/digital-comic/64727?ref=c2VhcmNoL2luZGV4L2Rlc2t0b3Avc2xpZGVyTGlz dC9pdGVtU2xpZGVy). Good old fashioned hard boiled crime.

Now that the Wonder Woman movie is coming out (check out the trailer (https://youtu.be/5lGoQhFb4NM)if you haven't seen it), I'm curious to read the originals. I know that the title itself has some... let's say "interesting" roots, but I'd really like to see the character from the beginning. Is that on Comixology, or elsewhere?

A lot of my favorites already mentioned. I have to second a The Boys for a good read.

I love Hellblazer. If you do too, check out Gravel. It's Hellblazer-like with the occasional gunfight.

The Invisibles is incredible.

Planetary. Just buy it all.

Sleeper is a short but very well done and gritty series. I think it would have appeal to a lot of folks here.

Two graphic novel special mentions:
Wanted is an epic GN, nothing like the stupid movie of the same name. Premise: what if all the super villains decided to work together for a bit, then divide up the world after killing all the heroes and rewriting history.

The Filth. It's an irreverent mind bender. If you like Transmetropolitan, or stuff like the Invisibles I'd be surprised if you don't love the Filth.

Sad to see that Darwyn Cooke recently passed away. These were fantastic adaptations.

Fuck cancer.

Dude....

I knew. I fought the urge. I knew what would happen if I opened this thread....

Green Lantern, FTW.

It hasn't been productive for anyone. I went from learning useful stuff (https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?19685-PopSci-That-s-Both-Accurate-and-Useful) to this:

ComiXology is having a Nathan Edmondson sale this weekend. I highly recommend Who is Jake Ellis? and Where is Jake Ellis?, but this is also a good opportunity to try out The Activity if that's more your thing. Can't beat the price.

Come get some free dead tree comics - you bastages!

https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?22416-Pay-It-Forward-Comic-Book-Giveaways&p=506025#post506025

And maybe plan to give away some of your older dead-tree comics, you bastages! You know chicks don't dig it when they come over to your apartment and find a stack of old Spiderman comics hanging out...

Thanks for the tips. Planetary was fantastic. Really excellent storytelling.

I liked Transmetropolitan, but the Filth didn't grab me as well. Still good, though.

Wanted. Not the abortion of a movie with Freeman, Jolie, and that dude that plays young Prof X. Comic book was gold. The Actiivty is another favorite. Anything Frank Miller and Batman related.

Quite welcome!

Planetary is really one of those superlative works of storytelling.

My son has been on a GI Joe kick lately, and I noticed that GI Joe: Cobra - The Last Laugh (https://www.comixology.com/G-I-Joe-Cobra-The-Last-Laugh/digital-comic/35292?ref=c2l0ZS9saXN0L2Rlc2t0b3AvZ3JpZExpc3QvbGlz dDE0Mjc3) collection was on sale at Comixology. Best GI Joe story in years - and not one for the kids.

It goes back a way but in terms of artwork and story, Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz's Elektra: Assassin is a landmark for me.

I'm a big fan of Alan Moore's writing and Mœbius' art.
