Week 158: How Small A Target In Two Seconds?

Results may be posted until May 1st, 2016.

Designed by: Gabe White
Range: 7 yards
Target: Shooter's choice, see below
Start Position: Holstered or ready, see below
Rounds Fired: Varies

This drill focuses on exploring how small a target we can hit pretty reliably, within two seconds at seven yards.

Set up your initial target at seven yards and your par time for two seconds. Shooter's choice of targets: 8" circle, USPSA lower A-zone, head box (6x6"), 3x5", USPSA upper A-zone, 2" circle, 1" square, and others are all acceptable. At the start signal, draw and shoot one shot at the target. If your range does not allow you to draw from a holster, begin from the ready position of your choice.
Try to start with a target you can be successful on, even if it is larger than you would like (entire silhouette?), and progress to more challenging targets. But you'll only have results to report if you can hit the target under the part time three times consecutively.

If you are successful three times in a row at hitting the target in two seconds or less, either end the drill or repeat using a more difficult target with the same distance and par time.
Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Gun, holster and concealment (optional), or ready position start
First target successfully engaged three times in a row and under two seconds
Any subsequent targets successfully engaged three times in a row and under two seconds
Observations: anything you noticed

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

G19 w/RMR Fricke AIWB, pullover concealment.
1st target 8 inch circle 1.8, 1.75, 1.69
2nd target 4X6 1.8, 1.73, 1.61
3rd target 3X5 1.81, 1.76, 1.8
4th target 2 inch circle 1.9, 1.88, 2.12

I ran the Rangemaster Bullseye course before this, but even so I clearly did better as I warmed up. Did a pretty good job of using the time available. I definitely noticed though that as the target got smaller so did my groups. My first shots on the 8 inch circle would not have fir into the 2 inch circle. The weather went downhill quickly when I got done with this drill. Gotta love an April snowstorm.

I had two rounds left over at the end of my session, so I ran this twice instead of the specified three times.

Glock 17 concealed under an open-front button-down shirt.
USPSA "credit card"
Two hits; 1.77, 1.49

CZ 75 from concealment, ran with a 2.75sec par target in my mind since my draw is so slow
Used the Find your level target, starting at 4" and working down

4" = 2.16 H, 2.66 H, 2.84 H
3" = 3.23 H, 2.18 H, 2.75 H
2" = 2.47 M, 2.65 M, 2.54 M, 2.62 M - clearly wheels fall off here, tried 1" at a pace I was hoping could guarantee hits just to get my times
1" = 3.15 H, 3.21 M - looks like maybe ~3.20+ sec is approximately the edge of hitting and missing for 1" targets for me

What did I learn? Can't draw in 2 sec right now, so need to work on that. Plus my threshold right now is probably 2.60-3.10 sec for the 2" target, and 3.20+ for the 1" target.

.

G17 drawn from open OWB

1st target attempted was a 3x5 and got 3 consecutive hits in 1.68/1.71/1.89.

Then moved to a 2" dot and only hit one of three. Attempted that several times and bolo'd all attempts.

Went 9 for 10 on another 3x5 under 2.0 but had ZERO success on a 2" dot.

This drill focuses on exploring how small a target we can hit pretty reliably, within two seconds at seven yards.

I can see now that I misapplied "hit pretty reliably" in constructing this DotW, at least with what I ended up doing with the drill. Explanation below.

I shot this with a Gen3 G34, concealed in a Keeper under a polo shirt. I chose to use a 3/4" round sticker as the target, because I like to try stuff that is really really really hard. And this was. The reason I said I misapplied "hit pretty reliably" is that I ended up taking about twenty attempts, and succeeded only once at hitting the target three times consecutively. Times were ~1.7 to 1.9.

I hadn't intended to shoot it a whole bunch of times. This was my first attempt and pretty representative of all the other failed attempts too - one or two hits, and one or two misses by millimeters.

The reason I got so sucked in wasn't for the drill of the week. As soon as I tried it one time, it became a strangely fascinating shooting task for me. I kept shooting it because it was really fun. I think it was because for me to hit a 3/4" spot at 7 yards, I really have to do everything so very right. Grip and draw have to be just about perfect, trigger finger must be completely isolated, great trigger press, etc., but more than that it really taxed my mind and emotions. I had to draw fast in order to have enough time left for aiming and triggering under the par, but to make the hit required a lot of mental and emotional calmness and non-attachment. I could draw and hit it if I did not grasp tightly for it. If I grasped for it mentally and emotionally, no hit. It was just really fun to work on a target of this difficulty under time pressure and out of the holster, even if I kind of subverted my own drill.

Glock 17 rtf2, under a sweater, in a Dark Star Gear aiwb

First successful target was a 4x6 card - 1.78, 1.71, 1.89

Next I shot a 3x5 and failed - 2.00, 1.86, then missed a 1.94

I wanted to keep going because I know I can do better and clean a 3x5 so I did another run and passed - 1.8, 1.82, and 1.98

I then shot 2" dots and failed miserably, either over time for a hit or under time and a miss. I suck at 2" dots.

Glock 22 with 9 mm conversion, Safariland ALS holster, using a vest
First successfully engaged target was 8 inch circle. Thought I was going to have to go with the C zone of the USPSA metric but finally pulled it together.
Next tried the 3x5 box and was successful on the second attempt and ran out of time so called it quits at that point.

Decided to try this as the sun was going down yesterday. I couldn't remember all the parameters, but since I'd been working at 3 yards, that's where I stayed for my attempt.
S&W 3913, custom horsehide OWB, concealed under untucked button-down, target a clean 3x5 card.
3.1, 2.7, 1.917, al clean hits. Probably would need a bigger target to get all 2s at this range. And some timed draws in dry-fire.
I felt like a rockstar, though, after the third shot. I'll try it again sometime at 7 yards. Definitely going to be a bigger target, though.

I tried this yesterday with an orange paster I had in my target bag. I attempted it 5 times and missed it every time, my front sight covered the paster completely. I didn't feel like getting out a slightly larger target, but as an accuracy exercise I liked this drill and will spend more time on it on other range sessions.

I used a P99, IWB holster, fleece vest and soft shell jacket - both unzipped. Range was the specified 6.4 meters. Target used: IDPA

First attempt: -1 area. Easy peasy. Second: -0. No problems there. Next, I tried the head box. Still stayed within the time limit, yanked a few shots though... Aaaand that's when the timer died. Son of a...!

Definitely going to try this again, when I get a chance.

Ran this 9 times today: 3x with the SP2022 9mm, 3x with the 642, and 3x with my older 3913 wearing Hogue rubber grips and a short baseplate magazine. All were from OWB custom leather, under an untucked shirt, at 7 yards. All double action shots, due to the nature of the exercise.

The target in all cases were B8 centers printed on 8.5x11 standard sheets of printer paper. And there were a few rounds that missed the paper.

The first run with the SIG gave me 2.74 (10), 2.3 (10), 2.32 (x). 2nd run was 2.38 (x), 2.6 (9), 1.999 (x). 3rd run was 2.42 (9), 1.94 (8), 1.84 (miss).

642. Run 1: 2.28 (7), 2.08 (miss), 2.34 (7-barely on paper edge). Run 2: 2.339 (7), 2.379 (10), 2.24 (8). Run 3: 2.339 (6-paper edge), 2.379 (9), 2.362 (X).

3913. Run 1: 1.86 (7), 1.93 (8), 2.24 (8-muffed clearing the shirt). Run 2: 1.777 (7), 2.121 (10), 2.241 (10). Run 3: 1.681 (9), 1.7 (7), 1.903 (9). Finally!

Things I noticed: I felt confident that I would get it in the black almost every time with the SIG, unless I muffed the shirt sweep or hurried too much. With the other two, the paper was the target if I wanted to try to beat the par time. I muffed the initial grip on the 642 pretty consistently. I like the Hogue grips I have on this 3913 - don't know if I'd have gotten that last run with all hits running the other one with the factory grip.

I did some draws from concealment today. Not precisely as this drill says (didn't shift immediately to another target after three successful hits), but from 7 yards and with a two second par time - close enough.

I used a Walther P99 with Trijicon HD sights, JMCK IWB holster, and a closed front concealment garment.

The closed front garment made my draw a bit slower, which did not come as a surprise. The fabric of the shirt was also pretty thin, making it easy to fumble clearing the garment out of the way. This in mind, I started from trying to engage the body A-zone of an IPSC Metric target. This turned out to be still an easy goal. Next, I selected as target the part of said A-zone that is above the tip of the letter A. Spent some time engaging this target and being mostly successful.

Glock 34 in a comp-tac paddle holster no concealment.
I cleaned the 8" circle fairly comfortably the times were in the 1.50's.
Then I attempted the 3X5 target I couldn't slow myself down enough 1 hit 2 misses the time was still in the 1.50 range.

Things I noticed- I am still having trouble changing my pace for tougher targets. I will need to find some drills that help me with that.
