For discussion:

When is it necessary?

Which carrier do you use? How much coverage do you have? Carriers to avoid?

I have a One Million Dollar per claim/Two Million Dollar Aggregate policy from Lockton Affinity in Kansas City. They are endorsed by the NRA, but the policy does NOT only cover NRA classes. The policy only costs like $320 a year.

Many ranges will not allow hosting a class without such coverage. You often have to name the range facility as an additional insured, which costs about $25 each time.

I think such coverage is important. Your waiver is largely useless (not yours,Lon, anybody's). Also, some states require coverage if you are teaching state mandated courses, such as CCW classes.

Lon, I use the same as Tom. You must have it, in my opinion.

I'm also using the NRA endorsed plan.

I've used (not currently) the Lockton Affinity plan myself. I was curious if there was anything better out there. Do you have an actual agent that you deal with? If so, can you pm me the info?
