I love NextDoor. It's mostly useless stuff except for reconnecting owners with lost pets, which is the #1 value proposition.

BUT, from time to time the scaredy-cats come out and sound the alarm bells over coyotes or whatever and I get to work. I was at IBM Manassas when that was circulating.

Some inside baseball stuff:

IBM had our own telephone system, called a Tie Line. So you see some references in that memo to "T/L". Our /360 and /370 machines were just starting to get connected. This was before the internet got big. So you could pick your email address. For example I was scuba@manvm1 believe it or not.

Boca was where ESD, Enterprise Service Division, was located. This memo originally circulated from them.

I recall vividly the day it went around the office. For staid old IBM, it was frankly, astonishing. You have to remember, we used to have "dress down Friday" by removing your suit jacket. Woah.

The IBM service techs who came to fix my 40Mb DASD (40 MEGABYTE DIRECT ACCESS STORAGE MAN! NO MAG TAPES WOOT!) donned sparkling white IBM overalls over his three piece suit.
