View Full Version : Waldo the Range Llama

I'd seen Waldo the Llama before, grazing in the brush beside the road to our range, his big shaggy white coat a sharp contrast to the greens and browns of a Pacific North West winter. He first showed up a couple months ago and I'd seen him on every range trip since. The rumour is that Waldo's previous owner didn't have the means to take care of him and rather than see him destroyed, the owner of the property beside our range decided to take him in.

But I didn't see him by the road today, and I wondered if the spring heat had pushed him back into the shade of the trees. As I pulled into the parking lot, I saw him walk out of Bay 4, head high, strutting his way across the lot like a British aristocrat. He glanced at me without turning his head in that snobby bastard way that only LLama's have.

Waldo likes to hang out near the range and as I hadn't shot for over three weeks, I thought I'd ask him for some pointers. He just looked at me as I talked, chewing his cud and silently judging me. Not wanting to waste the moment, I offered him the only food I had with me, a banana. It seemed like a good move at the time. I threw it at his feet and he approached. He lowered his head and sniffed and snorted at it. I thought that maybe, just maybe, I had won him over with my food offering. But he raised his head, shot me a look of disgust and walked away. Apparently Llama's don't like Banana's. Clearly I had breached Llama etiquette and Waldo was not amused. I stalked him, Paparazzi like, in an effort to get a few pictures. He just walked away, seeking whatever amusement Llama's enjoy on nice spring days.

As I drove off the range Waldo was waiting at the gate. He was obviously not impressed with my shooting or my food offering. I said hello, but he just watched me go, silently judging me in that snobby bastard way that only Llama's have.

I guess I'm going to have to work a little harder to gain Waldo's approval.

That's pretty cool.

They're neat animals. Some of the ranchers near my folks' place keep them around to chase off coyotes. My dad bonded with one next to his favorite restaurant and couldn't talk about anything else for two months.

Yeah, Waldo's a cool dude. The pics don't do it justice but he's really tall. I'm 6' 2" and he is taller than me.

I just need to figure out what kind of snack to bring him on my next visit. Carrot? Apple?

Llady Llama?

No, he's a he. At least I think he is based on the anatomical evidence I could gather as he repeatedly walked away from me...

Next time tell Waldo to fuck straight off. Unless he shoots a sub-four second FAST, in which case he has every right to judge you.

Probably a good idea. Start the conversation from a position of power. I like it.

Neat!

You never know. A guy I worked with was out for birdies. He looks and sees his bird dogs running for him full tilt. They are followed by an enraged emu! Talk about a bird dog nightmare! He shoots into the air, it's still coming. Then he shoots some bird shot in front of it, and the ricochets sends it running away.

Never saw a llama out here on the loose. For those in TX who shoot Cedar Ridge, if you go down Borgfeld to connect Blanco and 1604, there is a place with wild animals. They have a feeder next to the road and the first time I was surprised to see a big old camel and a zebra wandering around. Llamas too!

I'm trying to embed a gif from 'The Emperor's New Groove,' but I still can't figure out how to embed gifs. Anyways, I can't see "llama" without thinking of David Spade.

I feel as though I need a range Llama. Perhaps that disapproving look could be motivational? "Did you see that sub 5 sec. FAST? No, because you don't care about me, all you do is stand there and eat, and stare right through me."

It could be a tax write off.

I see an opportunity for Llama Cavalry.

Bonus points if done shooting a Llama pistol.

Too bad Llama folded as a company, IIRC.

See, I saw the title of the thread and thought it was going to be an offshoot of the one discussing/making fun of all the different shooter stereotypes. Way back in the early days of first person shooter video games, people who didn't take advantage of the MUCH faster ability to turn that using the mouse gave you were derisively termed "keyboard llamas." I was sure it was going to be something like that, rather than an actual llama that just happens to live on/near a shooting range. :)

Perhaps Waldo would travel and hold classes. I will ask him to contact Alias and get on their roster.

I have access to a Llama pistol, please don't put such epic ideas in my head.

Good idea, I have a Sombrero that would suit him.

There's at least one Llama I know of in IN who provides perimeter security for a herd of sheep...he is ostracized by the sheep for being a Llama, but he cares little...for there are coyotes that would seek to do harm to the sheep and those sheep sleep safely in their hay at night because a rough Llama stands by ready to do violence on their behalf...

He's a SheepLlama...

This went well. I was afraid it was going to turn into one of those "What gun for the alpacalypse (https://www.google.com/search?q=alpacalypse&biw=1093&bih=538&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjQi4qU_OHLAhVEJCYKHaSRB9wQsAQIGw)" threads.

If I bake up some Camelid Cookies (see above link) will you take them to Waldo? Waldo seems like one bad mo-flicker.

Not to be confused with a Dolly Llama (http://www.amazon.com/Aurora-Plush-12-Llama-Flopsie/dp/B001PJXGJ2/).

LOL, no worries, I will bring him a couple of cut up apples the next time I head to the range. Banana's were on the list of potential foods in the link but it seems Waldo has more discerning tastes....

Just don't lose track of ol' Waldo...

I hear finding him can be quite a puzzle.

You could teach him to respond to a bell. It would be a Llama come-ah ding dong.

years back we were given two Llamas and a ram for our farm. The ram having grown up with the llamas was accustomed to them but the sheep we already had knew they were in fact bloodthirsty sheep killers and kept their distance, even running in terror when the poor llamas tried to make friends. The looks on their faces was quite amusing, a mix of confusion and sorrow. Come spring time and the ewes started popping babies, who quickly determined the llamas were good mountains to climb when they were laying down, and good friends to have out in the field, much to the horror of their mothers who would rush the llamas and bunt them trying to keep them away from their tasty babies. It took around 5 years before they had earned the trust of the adults, although some were still often spooked by them if they weren't paying attention.
When we got cows again, it started all over, bloodthirsty carnivorous cows...

There was a sheep farmer who lived up the road from me who bought some alpacas to guard the sheep. Apparently alpacas aren't afraid of coyotes and will stomp them into the dirt. I won't vouch for the truth of that, but that's what he told me. Anyway, when it came time to shear, the alpaca wool was worth more than the sheep wool, so he ditched all the sheep and went full on alpaca farmer. Alpaca, the new sheepdog...but with wool!

We were told the same about the llama and the alpaca we had (well before the llama), sadly the coyotes proved to be far too good at their game. The night we lost the two alpacas we lost 4 sheep, we lost both llamas and 12 or 13 sheep over two nights the last year I was involved with the farm. I couldn't keep up with the yotes. I'd kill a hundred a year and see no difference.
