I hate that shit (tannerite).

A 32-year-old Walton County man didn’t break any laws Saturday when he shot his lawn mower filled with an explosive, but he did lose his leg below the knee, the sheriff’s office said.

"An idiot and his limb will soon be parted."

It's a shame it didn't trim him at the shoulders, he might yet reproduce.

It was only a matter of time.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner, really.

I like the Tannerite. A couple ounces in an orange painted plastic souffle cup makes for a challenging and fun 200 yard target.

I like it too.

As long as it's being handled by somebody who has some sense. I find, however, that those who are buying and handling the stuff are woefully short on the sense bit of the equation.

If we can keep the lawyers out of it, that problem will fix it's self eventually.

Tannerite is a lot of fun when used properly but for every fun thing that has ever been made...guns, fast cars, even a simple skateboard, will be misused by those with a shorted deck.

We should probably get the government to control it.

I wonder what cut his leg off, the blade? Or a piece of the mower deck?

About 2-1/2" diameter. They make enough of a explosion to get a good dust cloud and an audible "Bang" at 200 yards. Not spectacular but fun.

I stopped having the urge to see things blow up when I was ten years old and fail to understand the juvenile attraction to Tannerite. Stupid people doing stupid things and all that.

Take one cinder block. Place one pound of binary explosives to each void in the block (I grind prilled ammonium nitrate to the consistency of salt and use 10% by weight alum. powder). Place said block in large prarie dog town. Cover said block with honey and rolled oats. Wait until block is covered and surrounded by p-dogs. You can figure out the rest. In larger quantities, works well for thinning wild hog populations.

Presley used three times the recommended amount and only stood 25 yards away.

Well, there's your problem.

Not letting evolution take its course is really going to bone humanity.

Tennis balls. Work great. Bright colors, large enough to be impressive, small enough to be challenging, and you can just throw new ones down range far enough to be safe.

Every time I see containers of Tannerite or equivalent on the shelf of a store, I wonder how long it will take for someone to do something stupid.
Now I know.

If people want to kill or mangle themselves due to their own stupidity, I have no issue with it.

I DO take issue with him then applying for disability, funded by my tax dollars.

Tipping my hat to his poise

Given that he has multiple videos of narrow misses I'd refer to it more as total stupidity rather than poise.

I blew things up as a Combat Engineer. It's a lot of fun. I also fully admit to juvenile attractions. I haven't played with tannerite because it seems lame compared to "real" explosives.

One of my old partners was a combat engineer for a bit before he got on the job, one of my favorite lines from this guy - "that looks like an explosive device and no, I ain't callin fuckin bomb squad."

Damn dude. Well I suppose that is a more exciting story of how you lost your leg than mine. And you got it on video too.

I'm not averse to Tannerite, but I haven't felt the need to spend my own money on it. In the end, idiots are gonna idiot. That's no reason to limit the rest of us.

...And it's on video. Scrubbed by USA Today, but still not especially pleasant.

43 feet?? He learned that lesson the hard way.

I'm also seeing another issue...the targets stapled to the trees. I just hope he has a better backstop in the distance to stop the 223 he is shooting.

The Sheriff in the video mentions safe standoff distance being 100 yards per pound of Tannerite.

I'm childish when it comes to this stuff. I'm taking the train-the-trainer IRTB at New Mexico Tech in May. The stipend got raised to like $50 a day, and I'm going with like 4 other friends in the same class, and 5 other people I work with, which means finding that fine line between eating about $6 of beef jerky every day, spending $44 on drinks every night and being sober enough to not have a hangover and look like an idiot around work partners when the explosives are going off all day in class.
