results may be posted until 11:59pm EDT on Monday 24-October-2011.

origin unknown; popularized by David Blinder (personaldefensetraining.com (http://www.personaldefensetraining.com/))
Range: 3yd or greater
Target: ten 2" circles (download pdf here (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/dot-torture-target.pdf))
Start position: varies
Rounds fired: 50

Dot Torture is a comprehensive marksmanship test that is easy to set up on almost any firing range. There is absolutely no time limit. The only thing scored is the number of hits you make out of 50 shots fired. Any bullet that clearly touches the scoring line of the intended target circle is counted as a hit. Rounds that hit a different circle do not count as hits. There are no make-up shots allowed; you must fire exactly fifty total rounds in the specified order.

If you have never done this before, shoot the test at three yards. If you have successfully shot a perfect 50 at three yards in the past, you can shoot it at any distance that challenges you.

Dot 1 – Draw and fire one string of 5 rounds for best group. One hole if possible, total 5 rounds.
Dot 2 – Draw and fire 1 shot, holster and repeat X4, total 5 rounds.
Dots 3 & 4 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #3, then 1 shot on #4, holster and repeat X3, total 8 rounds.
Dot 5 – Draw and fire string of 5 rounds, strong hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 6 & 7 – Draw and fire 2 shots on #6, then 2 on #7, holster, repeat X4, total 16 rounds.
Dot 8 – From ready or retention, fire five shots, weak hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 9 & 10 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #9, reload, fire 1 shot on #10, holster and repeat X3, total 6 rounds.

Note: if you are using the Q-PT target, the strings work out slightly different:

Dot A – Draw and fire one string of 5 rounds for best group. One hole if possible, total 5 rounds.
Dot A (again) – Draw and fire 1 shot, holster and repeat X4, total 5 rounds.
Dots 1 & 2 – Draw and fire 1 shot on #1, then 1 shot on #2, holster and repeat X3, total 8 rounds.
Dot 3 – Draw and fire string of 5 rounds, strong hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dots 4 & 5 – Draw and fire 2 shots on #4, then 2 on #5, holster, repeat X4, total 16 rounds.
Dot 6 – From ready or retention, fire five shots, weak hand only, total 5 rounds.
Dot B – Draw and fire 1 shot, reload, fire 1 more shot, holster, and repeat X3, total 6 rounds.

Please report both your score and the distance to the target when you post your results in this thread.

Coincidentally, I shot this yesterday while I was at the range. I scored 47 at 6 yards, dropping two on the weak-hand only segment and another during the transitions.

I scored 47 at 6 yards...

That's cause you suck. :D

I'll be doing this one tomorrow or the day after, will post distance and results once finished.

Continuing with my transition to the M&P I shot this drill today. First time cold: 47/50 @ 3 yards.

http://i.imgur.com/KAmJV.jpg

Second time after shooting the DotW drill from week 1 that I did not participate in: 41/50 @ 3 yards.

http://i.imgur.com/oUMMV.jpg

As you can see I tried to push myself on the second run and I paid for it. My WHO/SHO is terrible ; any one know of a drill that would help? My range session ended with me doing SLR drills, which are now down to 1.50-1.70, reload drills were from concealment.

Pistol: M&P 4.25 Pro Series; D&D Holster; Ammo: CCI aluminum case 147gr.

One that I can do at my restrictive indoor range, and I did it today since I was working on strong arm, and weak arm only shooting. I got a picture with my phone, but it wasn't in focus.

45 out of 50 rounds at 3 yards.
8 - dropped three
9 - dropped one
10 - dropped one

9 and 10 were screw ups, just went too fast, but I still have to work on weak arm only shooting.

Shot with M&P 9 FS # 2.

Shouldn't he have to go further if he's already cleaned DT @ 10Y?

Actually, FWIW I shot it at 7yd today and cleaned it. The rules above are pretty clear, if you've shot a perfect 50 at 3yd you can shoot it at any distance that challenges you. With my Glock, 7yd is a challenge. It took me more than 20 minutes to complete the whole thing.

http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/G17gen4-DotTor50at7-111017.jpg

Before the week is out, I'll probably try it at a further distance. But 7yd is the longest distance I've been able to clean with the Glock.

The rules above are pretty clearYep, they are. I was just looking for a glimmer of hope that I'd be able to (at least) match your score. Essentially, a handicap.

Guys, I'm going to split the sight discussion off to a separate topic so we can keep the DotW thread about the DotW.

Had to loan my 5946 to a guy that broke his barrel on the line today, so shot it with my Gen4 G17, (-) connector, no backstrap, and Ameriglo Defoor sights. Didn't have a chance to install the Gripforce Adapter or the Vickers slide stop....

Shot at 7m, cold. Haven't touched a gun since the Hackathorn class a week and a half ago. Not really surprised with the WHO shots, I kind of expected to pull at least 1. But it shocked the hell out of me to drop one shot each on Dot 6 and 7... I knew when I pulled them though. I think I was rushing things, we were between relays for qualification, and I wanted to get it done in case I didn't have time later (which I didn't). I know I can do better if I take my time though.

sorry for the crappy pic, iphone inside the range, and I forgot the sheet when I came home.

A disappointing 46/50. I guess I suck now, huh zRxz.... lol

Notes:
25 MPH winds (Central Texas) made this quite an eventful drill. A shot for Dot 5 managed to land in Dot 2, due to the oscillation of the target coupled with breaking my wrist up with the trigger press. A nice flinch manifested on Dot 8.

Shot this after work and it was torture. 43 at 5 yards. How embarrising! I've cleaned this drill at 7 yards, almost didn't post it. 2/3rds of the way through it dawned on me that I had just changed the grip adapter from Large to the smaller Medium. I was experimenting to see if this would help me release the magazines without shifting my grip. Once I changed back to the Large, I was back on target. Experiment was a definite failure.

ToddG--You are a kind, generous, and gracious normal human being. The guys I shoot with are harsh, brutal Neanderthal's who won't cut a brother some slack--if the line is not fully broken (like the 3 o'clock hit on my dot 9) they won't let me count it...

Allowing liners benefits large calibers over small ones. Disallowing liners, OTHO, benefits small calibers over large ones. All else being equal, I'd rather give the benefit to the big calibers even though I, personally, carry a small caliber. It's also just a good simple system. Either it broke the line, or it didn't. It makes for the easiest, most repeatable judgment. That's why almost every shooting sport uses it as a standard.

Holding folks to tight standards is great. But if I wanted folks to shoot a half inch smaller group, I'd reduce my scoring zone by half an inch.

50/50 at 5 yards, but only by the grace of John Moses Browning's big .45 ACP bullets.

Shot the drill cold with my Gen 4 Glock 21 after installing Warren sights on it. The Warrens make the gun a million times easier to shoot than the factory Glock sights.

I had a counting Fail shooting dot torture today which is pretty embarrassing. 42/50 counting rounds not fired as misses. I was practicing by myself in a far off bay and shoot 2x runs on 6&7 when someone started walking up to my bay. The range is public with no RO and has some gang activity around it so I reloaded my carry ammo before talking to the person. After he left I went back to my drills and forgot I still had 2 more runs on 6&7. Not sure how I missed this when I took the picture and I didn't notice/remember till I just now looked at it on the computer.:( Off to have my four year old teach me how to count to 4.

Shot a 48/50 3yds -1SHO & -1WHO in AFHF earlier this month and probably should of backed up to 4 yd's today.

This was my first swing at Dot Torture with a recently acquired handgun.

50/50
3 yards
Beretta 96D

I have only cleaned it twice before at 3 yards with the gun that I normally shoot (G22). I typically shoot a very consistent 49/50 at 3 yards dropping a random round here or there :) It would help if I always dropped a round off the same dot, at least then I would know what to work on. But nope, I am not that lucky.

7 yards, P30, Heinie sights, Federal 115 grain ammo. Hoovered it (meaning I sucked) with a 44/50. Evidence of the magnitude is seen in the fact that I shot better with my dominant hand than with my ultra-dominant hand.

Not sure why it's sideways...I never have figured out this damn camera phone.

Just installed a set of Ameriglo Hack sights on my M&P 9c and broke them in with dot torture. Much better than the stock sights.

48/50 at 3 yards, dropped two SHO on bad presses. Guess I know what I need to work on.

After putting 20 rounds down range with my new Sevigny carry two dot sights I shot this.

http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb345/JConn1/IMG_3169edit.jpg

I am not proud of this, but all things considered I still decided to post it. My press outs still suck, badly, and I dropped one on dot 3 as well as the SHO and WHO dots due to bad press outs. The two misses on dot 6 are just me pulling follow up shots low. I think I need to slow down and ensure hits, but slow isn't as much fun.

After replacing my sights (from Trij HD to Warren/Sevigny 2-dot), I tried DotTor at 10yd repeatedly yesterday. I never made it past the second dot without multiple dropped points.

Finally, after spending four hours and over 1,000 rounds getting acquainted with the sights, I tried it at 8yd. As you can see, the results were not good.

I've cleaned it at 3 yards several times so I tried it at 4 yards. Dropped one on dot 3 and one on dot 8. I saw the sights dive on dot 8 but was annoyed by the lack of sight knowledge on dot 3. The dive dot 8 was ugly. That thing that looks like a grease streak on the bottom of the paper, that was the shot.

Either a 47 or 48. we'll say 47.

My SHO/WHO shooting still needs much work. Other than that, 10 FEET was fairly easy. Going to try it at 4 yards the next time I go, and try to go even slower and try for 50.

I decided to shoot this today with both my XD 9 Service model( which I've put less than 100 rounds through in the last year as I've been concentrating on my Glock) and my Gen 4 Glock 17 at three yards. I shot the XD cold followed directly with the Glock. Lately I have been better WHO than SHO, but today my weak hand failed me with both guns. With my XD I completely pulled the first SHO shot and dropped 4 of the WHO shots. With my Glock I dropped 3 WHO shots.

Second, after a about 2K trouble free rounds through my Gen4 G19, it is starting to have the erratic ejection issue. I experienced a malfunction when a freshly extracted (and weekly ejected) case dribbled halfway back into the chamber and caused a double feed.

There is some correlation between the gen3 trigger assembly and stoppages in gen4 Glocks. Try putting the original back in and see if the problem goes away.

Personal best at 7-yards, 49/50.

Congrats!
