For folks who live in "non-urban" areas with a consistently high wind speed, what would be a good recommendation for pepper spray? (Calling Mr. Haggard!)

I've tried practice and live sprays outdoors and have not been impressed with the results... Including taking a bit of live spray to the face as a result of wind. (Sabre Spitfire, I believe.)

I want an intermediate force option, but also don't want to blind myself in an altercation.

Look into stream delivery systems as they mitigate, but do not eliminate, the issue. Any of the cone/fogger systems will have significant cross contamination in windy conditions.

Foam?

Saber Red makes a gel spray. I have no experience with it, but it's marketed of wind and bad weather.

No gel, no foam.

The gel sucks, and tends to be ineffective and slow to work, the foam is the delivery system most affected by the wind. Stream is what you want. Look at the Sabre Crossfire stuff.

The Spitfire would be marginal at best in high winds.

I highly recommend the DPS Xtreme range. The folks at J&L have been great to deal with in my experience. I'm generally not a big fan of stream sprays, but DPS is one of the best ones out there.

With pepper spray, I default to four brand names - FOX, Sabre Red, DPS, and Police Magnum OC-17 on the low end. I've used all of these sprays on two and/or four-legged critters with good results.

On another note, with pepper spray, you want to put as much consideration into the container as the spray itself. There are three types currently used on most sprays - a red twisty cap, which sucks in my opinion, a flip-top - like what DPS uses, and the cop-top, which is available from Fox Labs.

Stick with the 2 to 4 ounce sprays, with a flip-top or cop-top nozzle. Just my opinion, and YMMV and all that.

Is there something out there with the ergonomics, configuration, and size of the Spitfire, but steams instead of mists?

Not that is going to work at any distance in high winds, no. That's like asking for a pocket pistol you can do sniper work with, limitations of the platform are always in play.

Chuck, is there a specific Saber Crossfire product you'd recommend? There seem to be various sizes, some with no clips (need to get the LE version?), and various formulations (e.g. 3-in-1, magnum 120 or magnum 60). Thanks!

Thanks - I was afraid of that. Then I know that I am sacrificing performance, but the ease of carry and ergonomics make sticking with the Spitfire worth it to me.

I failed at searching yesterday and earlier, but succeeded just now... so will share these links instead of having Chuck and others rehashing what they've typed in the past.

I've seen some good results with JPX, but it's not very practical for everyday carry.

I am really not a fan of those types of pepper "guns"

For the lazy or those don't search so good like me, these two recommendations were from the other threads that I linked:

Chuck prefers "the Saber Red to the formulas with CS added. IMHO CS brings nothing to the table. I also prefer the flip top type sprayers. Or the Spitfire."

"Claude Werner recommends the Sabre Red Spitfire."
