View Full Version : Your Most Enjoyable Revolver
As a follow up to the "Why Revolver? (https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?19502-Revolver-why)" thread where many of us professed a sheer enjoyment for the gun, what is your most enjoyable revolver? Which one has historically brought the biggest smile to your face for the longest amount of time?

Smith K-22. Colt SAA, the 4 3/4" nickel 44 spl, and Ruger SA in 45 Colt.
The single six Rugers can also be a lot of fun.

I don't own very many revolvers, but I love my pinned and recessed 4" Model 19. One of these days I will send it off to get a brass bead put in the front sight, otherwise the gun is perfect as is.

My SW 632 comp'ed SS J frame in 327 mag. Fits my little hands well (NO TRUMP!). 3 inch barrel. You can shoot it SA as it has a hammer (not all J's in the 32s did in the recent runs).

Wiley Clapp GP100. I think I'm more accurate with this gun than anything else I own. It's the first Ruger I ever looked at and said "that's a good looking revolver" and it runs as good as it looks.

4" Model 624, I gun I stupidly sold, then smartly reacquired. Bowen front sight, double ball detent, chamfered cylinder holes, the silkiest action you can imagine. Obviously no beauty, but loves heavy bullets.

My 5" classic 629 is pretty hard to beat. I have a 5" 24 that is not ready for prime time yet, but may become my favorite when it is.
I recently traded into a 5.5" SS Ruger Bisley 45C/45acp convertible. It is really quite magnificent, and so far, I prefer it to my 44 spl and magnum Bisley's.
One of those 2 (maybe soon to be 3) is what I'll be packing today, out cutting firewood with my 260:-)

4" Model 15.
Mine would also be my Model 15 that I bought in early 1973 with money I made delivering newspapers including the windfall of Christmas time tips. I guess if I was a little older (had it been prior to 1968) I would have not needed my father's help with the transaction? Bought it a LGS that has a range and sold reloads, and my dad and I spent lots of time shooting it. This was also the gun I started reloading for on the Rockchucker I still have. It was used, and had been slicked up by a competent amateur, I think one of the staff at the store. They also had a Python that day that had been professionally worked over at Armalloy that we were both lusting after, but it was a hell of a lot more than the $93 I paid for the M-15. I dry fired that gun till the firing pin broke, and that took a lot back then.
Unfortunately I speak of the M-15 in past tense, because some lowlife shithead took it in a burglary, along with a Security-Six I had bought myself on my 21st birthday.
I replaced it with a nice pinned & recessed M-19 that I had worked over by a very good local friend that could have been a big name smith if he had been willing to work on people's guns who he didn't like. It is certainly a better gun than the M-15 was, but it will never be the same. These days it too needs some gold or green for the front sight, consequently I do not shoot it as frequently as it deserves.
Pretty sure I still have the range pass from the day I bought the M-15, it is in a scrapbook some place. I also have the (empty) bottle of Wild Turkey I bought the same day as the Security-Six, but the guns are memories now. Don't want to hijack the happy thread, but I will just add this thought:
Thieves Are Assholes...

You make a lot of sense here. No, I have not, just every time I look at it I think about the end game, gold dot or a getting it milled out to accept one of the pinned sights. Either of those plans would probably require refinishing, and if I am going to refinish it then it needs a little cleanup where it was converted to round butt, and then maybe some matting. And who to send it to, since just the shipping is over $100 if it is not local (I was spoiled by my local buddy, RIP...)?
I probably just need to buy some nail polish, one of the clubs I belong to is just a mile from my office and spring is right around the corner. I could churn through some button nose wadcutters I loaded a while back, just for old time's sake....
Good tip on the base coat of white.

I just had a local guy machine a Novak dovetail and got a Dawson .140" tall fiber optic sight. :) Some of the S&W revolvers already have a pinned front sight. The pin is almost invisible and very hard to see. I think C&S has the sights.

I'm going to venture a guess that the Passion of the Gun thread, and I think another similar one about the same time got many people thinking about the different aspects of shooting and guns besides sheer cold hearted practicality angle. I recall several people saying they may have lost interest in shooting if they hadn't re-found the fun part of it, which was heavily into the revolver side of things for many. Part history, personal and otherwise, and part history of the guns and their use. Like you've mentioned about some of the old N frame Smiths you've found that were LE guns from way back, and stacked up the bad guys.

Nice Smith. I was issued one of the few M64s chambered in .357 Magnum back in the revolver days at my work. Had to turn it in for a G17 in 1989. Sadly, it was destroyed per policy at the time. Wish I could have bought it. Still remember the serial number. D672999.

Lately, it seems that my favorite is whichever is currently in my paws. I also concur about the "fun" aspect, although there is a serious bent to it as well. I wouldnt have bought that new SP101 out of pure nostalgia. I think its just like everything else...there are certain things that older technology is simply superior at. Its maybe the same reason you find a slap stick in modern performance cars, or the same reason they are finding that too much technology in airplanes is bad. New doesnt necessarily mean superior.
Funny on the serial number thing too. I can repeat my first issue ## as well, although it was an auto and not a flintlock. :D
If I had to pick, Id say its my M28. There is just something about that oil drum sized cylinder and the way it rolls when you shoot it.

I'd have to say my Ruger SAs have given me the most over the years, from Single sixes to 357 BH to Bisley 45 Colt and a "Bisleyed" 44 SBH and Bisley Vaqueros, those guns have been with me most of the time afield years before there was even CAS to for me use them in. Nearly all with 5.5 inch bbls.
Close seconds though are my 3" SW 64 RB that I worked the trigger pull over... pure sweetness that gun and shoots EXACTLY to point of aim with 158 LHP or my SW .44 Mountain, also with some trigger work, not forgetting to mention a SW 4"Mdl.12 that has a very nice trigger pull from the factory.

One of those model 13s look tempting, but it's not in the financial cards right now. Until it is, I'll have to make due with my 4" Model 64-3 (poor me!). I think this Smith is the best of any revolver I've ever owned, including a 6" Python I had for 27 years and sold last year for a LOT more than I paid for it.
The 64 is a police trade I bought about 18 months ago, slapped on some Herrett Roper stocks I had made for my hand, and I've been enjoying it ever since. It's surprisingly accurate with my cast 158 gr. LRN mid-range reloads. Perhaps it sounds strange, but after a few sessions with the 64, I seem to usually shoot my Glock 19 better. I own other revolvers, but this particular one is the most enjoyable I've ever had, and it only cost $275 shipped.

Not at all; I've had the same experience, and find I shoot a Glock better when I treat it like a "light revolver trigger" and pull straight through smoothly. YMMV. Sorry, no thread-derail intended.

Not fair. I really like my K-frames: A 19-4 and a 17-3, both 6", along with a 10 and a 15, both "no dash" 4" models. I do very well in the club PPC matches with the 19. With the 15, I start humming this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkTSAGEqJt0).

Found this yesterday at an Estate sale:
6377
It's a 2nd generation .38 Special from 1957. Grips are real mother of pearl. Sights are dead on for windage and elevation with standard velocity 158 grain loads. It is a pussycat to shoot.
Allan's Armory has them for real cheap.

Left revolvers for many years, but a week ago we took my wife's tuned S&W 631 4" adjustable sight 32 H&R Magnum out in the desert and it was terrific! It was a ton of fun, I have decided to look around for a fun revolver for me. We took it and her G43 and I found myself liking the little 32 far more. It's too bad Smith dumped this so quickly, as it is amazingly accurate. Shot 32 S&W Long wadcutters, Black Hills 32 H&R Mag JHP's and some old Masters Cartridge 32 H&R Mag JHP's. The 32 Long wadcutters recoil like 22's in it and are extremely accurate. Shooting them double action as fast as I could produced tiny six shot groups. They have to be perfect for putting small game in the pot when we camp. Seems like a fine little trail gun for us.
Nothing special about it, but certainly enjoyable to shoot. It will see a lot more use now for our hikes in Prescott National Forest! The only downside to it is not having a shot cartridge available, as we soon will be seeing the many species of rattlesnakes that inhabit our area. We leave them alone, and generally they do the same. The shot loads would be nice for those rare occasions where we surprise each other.
It would have to be my Mojo Customs tuned Smith & Wesson 686SSR.

No pics but my S&W M18 .22 that I've had since I was 19, many thousands of .22 down that pipe. Also my 3" M13, about the perfect combo. Shoot the .22 for a while then practice with the .357.
Mine would be S&W Model 629. First revolver and still the favorite.
So I was curious to see if there would be any consensus that would emerge around favorites. I mostly did this for ideas for a future shopping list :). Anyway, here are the models that received 2 or more mentions. I didn't count it if you posted a picture and not a model name (sorry, I didn't want to spend the time). I also had to sort out guns that were just listed and ones that were included among favorites. Long story short - a very unscientific list
S&W Model 15 - 4 votes
Colt SAA - 3 votes
S&W Model 19 - 3 votes
S&W Model 17 - 3 votes
S&W 629 - 3 votes
Ruger GP100 - 3 votes
S&W K22 - 2 votes
Ruger WC GP100 - 2 votes
S&W Model 18 - 2 votes
S&W Model 27 - 2 votes
S&W Model 14 - 2 votes
S&W 64 - 2 votes
S&W Model 10 - 2 votes
If the two GP100 models were combined it would be the winner.

Yeah, but if different sights and barrel lengths can be combined, it's k frame 38s, then k frame 22s

Sure, you can slice it and dice it however you want, not a contest, just an interesting observation.

I've probably had the most fun with my Heritage Rough Rider popping empty shotgun hulls until they were too far away for me to hit. But with .22 being the way it is I haven't take the rimfires out of the safe in a long while.

My most "enjoyable" is a tie between my K22 and K32 (M16 32swl). Both shoot well and soft, but the K22 means I don't have to care about reloading my brass, while the K32 means easier cleaning after the session.
My K38 is a very close second to those two.
All three together. Top to bottom-K22, K32, K38. The K32 now has matching grips.

That's easy, it's a 6" Smith model 14, the K38.

Most enjoyable for me all by my lonesome - Cimarron Arms (Uberti) 1851 Colt Navy (London Edition) clone. I enjoy it and with Pyrodex it isn't too hard to keep clean. I need to order some materials and take it to the range again.
Most enjoyable for me to irritate other shooters at the range with? The Smith 642. I never get tired of hitting 25-yard bulls with it, to shut up the range know-it-alls that want to tell me that my J-Frame will get me kilt in the street. Interestingly enough, I never see those guys at the gym the next day...

For single action, my favorite (even though I am a .44 guy at heart) is this .45 convertible, due to the fact it will see 99% of it's life shooting .45 ACPs.

The favorite goes to the ever practical "all around", the 5" N Frame Model 29 .44 Magnum:
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b109/IV_Troop/039-1.jpg (http://s18.photobucket.com/user/IV_Troop/media/039-1.jpg.html)

In fact, I would go so far as to say, If I was forced to choose just one revolver for all my outdoors activities, this would be it.
It is funny how, excluding rimfires, and J frame duties, the above 2 revolvers really do all a guy needs or wants to do. At least for me, and where I live and play.

Based on my round count since I bought it last summer: S&W 17-3
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TmaK0Dkk_KA/VbQOKbv3MGI/AAAAAAAAGJg/adn87_acfyw/s1600/Model-17.JPG
I'd say that I've put a thousand rounds through it, but I'd be low.
For centerfire, it's bigger brother, a 19-4, which I bought new back in the day:
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8RnuPILoamE/T85zHQARq2I/AAAAAAAAECk/2MKwdnT2bvM/s1600/M-19.JPG
First time I'd ever shot bowling pins, I cleaned the table in under nine seconds with the Model 19. (I've done a lot worse, but I got hooked on that run.) In the club PPC matches, I've done rather well with it.

Thank you. It is not a classic like the others in this thread. It is newer, so has frame mounted firing pin, MIM parts, and key lock. Because it is newer I shoot the snot out of it and don't worry about breaking parts. Only handgun I own that I can make head shots with a two-hand hold at 25 yards.

If you judge favorite by the number of hours/days/months/years/mills carried, or wear personally put on it, then this 642-2 is the undisputed champion of my little collection.
I enjoy showing people that you can actually make aimed shots with an airweight jframe, as well. But I prefer actually shooting my 13-3.

But for cheap fun, or introducing someone to shooting, I love my Ruger Single Six convertible. From CB caps to .22 Magnums, it puts little pills where they go, a smile on my face, and reminds me of shooting .22 revolvers with my dad when he was teaching me to shoot.
Unfortunately, no pic is on this iPad, but I'll add one later after I get home.
Ok, there's two pics of my 642 on here, somehow. Aren't computers awesome? I tried to delete one. Oh, well.

Mkay, I rented an Italian SAA clone...I think it was a Beretta Stampede...and it was a fan-freakingtastic revolver. I shot it more accurately than most any other pistol I've laid hands on....plus there was just something awesome about the big boom of a 45LC and how comfortable it was to shoot.
I've got a bad case of the wantsies now. Like a MIGHTY need for a single action revolver

The one revolver I have had the most fun/quality time with is a Ruger Super Single Six with a 5.5" barrel. It was my first Ruger back in 1980 and it was attached to my hip when I lived on the family farm in Georgia. I might well trade one of my Ruger semi-auto .22s for another at some point down the road.
