Week 154: Failures to Stop

Results may be posted until April 4th, 2016.

Designed by: Gabe White
Range: 7 yards
Target: USPSA Metric or IDPA or similar
Start Position: Holstered and/or ready, see below
Rounds Fired: 27

For this drill of the week, we'll shoot a few variations of the classic failure to stop drill (two shots to the body, one shot to the head.)

String 1 (Freestyle): At start signal, draw and shoot two shots to the body and one shot to the head. Record your time.

String 2 (Strong hand only): At start signal, draw and shoot strong hand only, two shots to the body and one shot to the head. Record your time.

String 3 (Support hand only): Start with the gun in support hand only ready position of your choice. At start signal, present the gun and shoot two shots to the body and one shot to the head, support hand only. Record your time.

No extra shots allowed. Shoot each string three times, for a total of nine strings. Total your times and score your target. We'll essentially use IDPA scoring and count the A/B/-0 zone as no penalty, C/-1 zone will add .5 seconds per shot, and the D/-3 zone will add 1.5 seconds per shot.

Alternatively, if you are not allowed to draw from a holster on your range, you may shoot all strings starting at ready.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Gun and target used
Holster and concealment (optional), or ready position start
Total raw time
Total penalties accrued
Grand total score (total raw time plus total penalties accrued)
Observations: anything you noticed

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Duuuuuude.. That was some awesome shooting. Atleast I've got a goal now, try and stay under double nwhpfan's time! That was so fast and so smooth. Very jelly.

Shot this with my CZ75 from concealment on a B8 replacement center and index card, pass fail. I'm going to extrapolate my scores since I didn't get enough strings and assume -1 sec down even though I think they might have been A's on a USPSA target.

2H: 2.10, 0.73, 0.71 = 3.54 (missed one to body)
SHO: 3.09, 1.11, 1.05 = 5.25 (missed one to body)
WHO: 4.83,1.20,2.39 = 8.41 (runs 1&2 didn't track time because I failed at using the timer, so this is run 3 all hits)

Extrapolated time =57.6 sec :(

What I noticed: I'm terribly slow 1H, my draws are like molasses, and my splits are too slow (based on my splits for the four 7s drills)

The misses were both whilst trying to shoot a head shot one-handed. Oopsie...

My idea of an appropriate A-zone is the portion above the tip of the "A" - hence the line drawn on the target.

That is insane. Please tell me you got that on video.

Nope, not that time, sorry. I shot that one several days ago and just took a picture of the target. I think I dropped one point freestyle and two SHO. I still have the paper with the individual times for the nine strings though. Freestyle: 1.28, 1.23, 1.25 SHO: 1.81, 1.70, 1.86 WHO: 1.46, 1.47, 1.52

I did shoot it again yesterday and got video of that. A little more accurate, not as fast. Just got done putting the video together. I wasn't going to, because boring, but you asked so here you go:

Gun: G43 with Talo sights, light stippling, stock trigger
Target: IDPA
Holster and concealment: Gunfighter Industries Wraith IWB at 3:00 under an open-front shirt
Total raw time: 30.86 seconds
Total penalties accrued: 7.5 (2 ea -1/0.5 sec + 1 ea -3@ 1.5 sec + 1 ea complete/utter/total miss @ 5 sec)
Grand total score: 38.26 seconds
Observations:

I shot this with a G43 because I’m starting to carry that more. I fired about a dozen rounds tweaking the zero, but had no other warmup.
Stippling is key. At speed, an unstippled G43 might as well be an eel.
I need to work on WHO shooting—all but one second of my total penalties came on the last WHO string.
The far left-hand flyer doesn't touch the line, so it's -3 instead of -1.

Also, I saw a guy a couple of lanes over shooting Dot Torture. When he ran out a FAST target, I went over and introduced myself. Turns out it was Drang. It’s odd to meet the actual people behind the user names.

Failures to stop!!

Pistol: Sig 226R in the duty holster (Level III Safariland 6360)
USPSA target

Shot this twice. First run was cold at a "match mode" pace. I then spent the training session working on an assortment of one handed skill drills. Mostly recoil oriented/sight tracking stuff at speed; playing a bit in the gray zone working on visual attention. A little bit of 25 yard work also. Then shot the drill again warmed up to finish up the session.

Cold run:

Two handed:
2.16
2.01
2.14

Strong hand:
2.76
2.80
2.72

Support hand (from the ready):
2.58
2.32
3.00 (lost the FS and had to adjust)

Raw time: 22.49
Total penalties: -1 point (low head)
Total time: 22.99

Warmed up run (end of session):

Two handed
1.51
1.73
1.59

Strong hand
2.42
2.19
2.30

Support hand (again, from the ready):
2.26
2.12
2.23

Raw time: 18.35
Total penalties: Clean/down 0
Total time: 18.35

Observations:

I noticed (yet again) that the difference between seeing/calling shots or not isn't as much about speed as it is about paying attention. I need to start to let myself shoot at the speeds I know I'm capable of while paying more acute attention, instead of being overly conservative.

I messed around shooting weak hand from a low extended ready vs a high compressed ready and found the latter more consistent and faster for me over the course of a bunch of runs. I've established this for myself before...and it holds true support handed too. Funny that. ;-) A nice testament to TLG perhaps...

Good drill. It did a cool job of blending shooting at speed with all the one handed elements. I shoot these sorts of micro drills a lot in dry fire. I need to do more of them live too. It was really valuable from a shot calling/sight tracking perspective.

Failure to stop, at 7 yards using B8 and 3x5 index card, 2H only due to lack of ammo

String 1: 2.39 H, 0.77 H, 0.84 H = 4.00 clean
String 2: 2.17 H, 0.58 H, 0.68 H = 3.43 clean
String 2: 2.25, 0.50 (one of these two went low, didn't know which - need to call shot), 0.72 H = 3.37 - 1 body

Noticed overall I was shooting slow enough to get mostly good hits on the body shots. Can slowly push index card speed, but didn't push too hard where I missed, which I was happy about.

Also, the was a lot of wind. I let my frustration at having to reset the target every other run screw with my head.
