A beat up looking surplus gun but a real diamond in the ruff. I replaced the springs, put a flat bottom firing pin stop and a cylinder and slide hammer and sear in it. I replaced the grips and did a little file work on the sights to fix were it was dropped, open the rear sight so I can see and fine tune to poa/poi. Very beneficial. It's now my edc. The weight of a glock with a grip that fits my hand and a trigger better than my 1911. I was gonna put some Novak sights on it but I think I'm gonna go real old school and keep the original sights. I'm still trying to decide on a finish. Either cerakote or black-t.

oh I'm dedicated to LEM. Secondscount came up to shoot with me today, had a blast shooting our HKs but it was fun to shoot a 5 inch 9mm 1911. I still, strongly btw, prefer my p2000/2000sk combo. I loved shooting the gun but I almost felt guilty afterwards. I have dedicated over 7 months to straight lem, I felt like I cheated on it ;)

How's the durability of these alloy framed HPs? Even the steel framed ones do not have a great reputation for durability.

How durable the hp is I guess depends on who is asked. I guess the best answer would be, an alloy hp is as durable as any steel frame design that has been made in aluminum.

The grips were made by a guy that is no longer making grips. Mil-tac grips are the closest to these.

If it works for you, its a great gun. 9mm 1911 for me because / better trigger and because / HP chews holes in my hands without a welded beaver tail.

Can we tempt a company to start producing lightweight hi-powers with a rail attachment? Maybe said company can increase the durability as well?

My first gun was a Kimber custom ii. My brother was influenced to get a pistol and we set out to hit the gun show and found an Argentina fm hi power. Made it to the range the next day and it wouldn't feed. Took it apart that night and what did I find? A small triangular piece had sheared away from the slide, catching the recoil spring.

Still I want a hp...

To each his own, but a rail on a BHP would be like Grace Kelly with a tramp stamp.

I never warmed to the HP: tiny sights, REALLY tiny safety lever, poor trigger, long reset, hammer bite, mag disconector... in this case, add a very short frame lifespan.

Have you looked at an FN Mk.III? Sights are much larger than the more historical models, safety levers (plural) likewise, trigger seemed decent on the one I've got to dry-fire...

I never warmed to the HP: tiny sights, REALLY tiny safety lever, poor trigger, long reset, hammer bite, mag disconector... in this case, add a very short frame lifespan.

That's true of the original military models, but FN has addressed those issues over the years. Today's Mk III has large ambidextrous safeties. The sights are larger, and there are solid aftermarket no-gunsmith options if you want to upgrade. Removing the magazine disconnector generally cleans up the trigger pull on any BHP. Hammer bite varies by shooter and hammer type--a ring hammer eats me alive but a spur hammer is fine, for some it's the reverse, for others nothing works. I hear that a proper action job can address the reset but have never experienced that.

Although the cast frames on the newer Mk III guns were developed to withstand the 40 S&W, and are reputed to last a lot longer than the forged frames, I still hear of Commonwealth troops running 70-year old Inglis Hi Powers for decades with hot SMG ammo, so not sure that I agree with the fragile frame thing. On the other hand, they have nearly unlimited armorer support, so there's that...

Okie, that's true on the MkIII, and I reckon the HP is a fine pistol, fits the hand well, good looking, first of the double stacks, and it was the western military standard for quite a while...

But if I wanted a "classical single action steel frame 9 mm", for me the CZ 75 is everything the HP35 wants to be, and no mods required.
