View Full Version : Clinch Pick grip texture

First of all let me say that I love the Shivworks Clinch Pick. It is the perfect size and I am really enjoying learning the P'kal fighting style. It is very intuitive.

I was wondering if anyone has modified their CP to add some texture to the grip. I find that during these dry cold times of the year, my hands are very dry and the CP can relatively easily spin around in my hands if I am not careful. After viewing some other knife designs and their grip textures (Special Circumstances comes to mind first) I thought maybe some light texture on my CP might be beneficial. I assume the CP is more smooth than others is for comfort against the skin. I wear mine at a 45 degree angle forward of the hips so that is not really and issue for me.

So am I barking up the wrong tree or is there some merit to some texture on a small reverse edge knife like the CP?

Texture doesn't hurt. Special Circumstances will texture your CP for a very reasonable price.

I've not had an issue with the texture as is but if it were to be any different the knife cost would jump up either due to machine time or hand time.

Ok. good to know. I'm a DIYer so I will probably give it a go. I was hoping maybe someone would have pictures of a CP with some texture to get some inspiration.

Are the CP scales G10 or Micarta? Has anyone tried bead blasting them?

If you want to spend some cash, Ban Tang probably has good solutions for you. First of all, if you're running a China Pick then it's worth sending to him for his regrind. Separately, he does a really nice cordwrap that is a lot flatter than the micarta scales and is very grippy.

ETA

Here's a picture of the wrap on one of his custom Ti CPs. But, he'll remove the micarta scales and do it on the China Picks too.

The original ones were g10, I don't know regarding the China made ones.
I had my g10 scales bead blasted and that made a big difference.

I used Herculiner truck bed coating on my handle. Excellent grip even when wet, only downside so far is that it catches slightly on some shirts. I carry my CP at the 11 o'clock position handle angled down. I also used 3:1 double wall adhesive heat shrink on another CP, not as textured but very grippy. The heat shrink was a great compromise between increased grip, but still allowing the cover garment to move smoothly over the handle without grabbing.

Here's the texturing Ian Wendt of Special Circumstances does in terms of texturing, which matches what he does on all of his knives. The China Picks use G10 handles, Ban Tang uses micarta.

I did a thing one time with a dremel.

Initially I tried for a pattern, didn't come out to my liking, so I went more "randomized" - It's kinda hard to get good pics of. Adding some grip was a factor, but the biggest thing for me is that I wanted a "flatter" egg. I took a decent amount out of the width of the handles.

If you're going to DIY, better get a respirator, If possible do it outdoors. Or, rig up a shopvac as a dust collector. The g10 dust is heinous.

Right. I meant to say G10.

Images of a China Pick with flattened grip panels with Emerson's texture applied just flashed before my eyes...

That is hella cool looking and just what I am looking for. Do you think the increased grippyness was worth it?

I think the mod is well worth it despite not being absolutely necessary.

Thanks man. I like the look of that. Do you mind telling us what dremel bit you used?

Just a sanding drum. As you'd imagine, fine takes longer and produces a nicer finish, coarse cuts into it nicely but leaves some gouges. I went with the coarse.

Tangential to the thread, but what is the best way to contact Ban Tang? I've sent him a couple messages on his website to no avail.

It's great that there are several options now for customizing China picks. I'm definitely interested in a regrind. I'm not sure about the "removing part of the bulb" line in the grip texture description. One of the things that makes the clinch pick special is the almost magical ability to lock in a consistent grip when under pressure or in unconventional positions. Has anyone had one done by Joe? If so how do you like the new feel?

Just received mine back fro Ian at special circumstances very satisfied. Turn around time was about 1.5 weeks once he got the knife

Well I decided to turn on the dremel and give it a go with my Clinch Pick. I went for a more Watson style texture. I think it turned out pretty good. Still trying to get used to it.

Wash it with soap and water, it'll clean up well and look a lot nicer. Texture seems fine, good job.

I like mine a lot. Actually more than the original bulb which, in my hands, just felt like a small ball in the middle of my palms and was uncomfortable. The redoing of the grip eliminated that discomfort without, for me, reducing the control I have over the knife.

Nice looking job. How is the shape as viewed from the top? you still kept some of the "bulb" shape or went for flat?

I put a slight flat on it before I did the texture. It slimmed the bulb a little but kept most of the girth.

Looks good, Irelander!

Did these for a customer a while back who wanted to retain the shape of the egg, but wanted added grip. The chainsaw sharpening bit for the Dremel did a great job.
