Any suggestions from people that have one?
Its a minefield on the internet trying to make up my mind...
A good cheaper model is the G1W-C but there is to many clones and copies of inferior quality. I will pass that one up.

Found a retailer close to me that have a DOD LS460W at a good price. Should I go for it?

Not sure if anyone else is going to chime in, but it's something I've considered looking into. One site I had bookmarked was Dashcam talk (https://dashcamtalk.com/)just haven't gone through the site to see their reviews.

This specific model (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P8F3LD0/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00P8F3LD0&linkCode=as2&linkId=EEEO3SZTKHDC6BJ2)was also recommended somewhere, but the reviews seem all over the place. I get the impression it's good for the price, but has limitations.

One of my first stops was at Dashboard Camera Review (dashboardcamerareviews.com), very informative site.

The G1W-C (http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/g1w-gs108/)is a good low priced model at +/- $50. that is if you find a genuine one.
The marked is flooded with cheap clones with inferior processors and lenses. And the only way to see if you have a "real" one is to open it up and I don`t want to go that route.
Here is some info on the knock off`s, here (https://www.reddit.com/r/Dashcam/comments/2by338/beware_of_fake_g1w_or_g1wh/) and here (https://dashcamtalk.com/g1w/)

This is the one that I Am looking at. The DOD LS460W (http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/dod-ls460w/)
I can have it for $195. Price is a bit steep, but its in a shop close to me and I don`t have to pay customs.... (or wait for parcel that is "lost" in the postal service)

The following table has a nice layout of most dash cams. Pick your poison ;) they have lists for cheap (http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/dash-cam-comparison-table/dash-cam-comparison-affordable/), affordable (http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/dash-cam-comparison-table/dash-cam-comparison-mid-price/) and expensive cameras (http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/dash-cam-comparison-table/dash-cam-comparison-high-end/). There is also a list for dual view cameras (http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/dash-cam-comparison-table/comparison-table-front-and-rear-cameras/)

Any further comments would be appreciated. I have placed the ls460w on hold at the shop till 20 Feb so I can still change my mind about it.

I have a g1w and it works really well, night time recording is shit though.

I also have one of the boxy looking dvrs in my wifes car, never had a single issue with it.

For the next dvr i get itll be a dual camera system where you can get double front angle or one facing the interior of the cabin.

Within a decade or two, easily. Insurance companies are already offering some as incentives and the commercial market has embraced such units for a long time now. Soon your insurer will penalize you for not having one.

Thought I would post my negative experience with this $58 Dash Cam from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P8F3LD0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

"Black Box G1W-CB "Black Bezel" Capacitor Model Dash Camera - Heat Resistant - Full HD 1080P H.264 2.7" LCD Car DVR Video Recorder - WDR 140° Wide Angle 4x Zoom Motion Detection Night Vision G-Sensor"

TL;DR: I would not recommend this dash cam.

I ordered it based primarily on the price as well as overall positive rating (3.4 stars.) I ignored the several negative reviews.

The unit arrived in good order. Desk side testing showed that the power button was a little sticky. I hoped that this would resolve itself.

Powering up the unit, after inserting the 32 Gb micro SD card I had bought, I had to resort to the manual several times to work out the options available. The manual was a small terse pamphlet size that corresponded, more or less, to the controls on the camera unit. It was not well laid out, and the English used was, curious.

Anyway, hoping for the best, I took it out to my truck to try several different mounting positions.

Unfortunately, after about 2 days of operation, the unit intermittently started to fail to power up and complete the boot process. At first it was only once, then after a time it completely froze up, each time.

I gave it a few more tries and then packaged it up and returned it to Amazon for a full $58 refund.

Couple other items of note:

I programmed in the date and time, as per the manual. However, this unit does not appear to have a battery (of any type, not a button cell, nothing) in which this data can be stored over power off sequences. I would have had to add the date and time each time it powered on. Considering it's use, this lack of ability to keep date and time "on" the video seems an astounding deficiency, given how cheap an EEPROM would be to store this data.

The unit, overall, was constructed of extremely cheap low quality plastic, and the switch contacts were of similar low quality / sticking and slow to rebound.

The accessories were similar. The 12 V DC power plug primary lead and ground points were of low quality and thin metal, and worked only in certain positions of the 12V plug relative to the truck jack. Also, the micro-USB on the other end end supplying power to the camera unit was not a tight fit to the jack, at all.

If ya'll have had better luck with any other units, I'd be obliged. I really want to mount one of these in my vehicle full time, with all the nonsense going on on the roads these days.

Not soon enough in my view.

I use one in my daily driver, and that was a fortunate development for the victims of a rural hit and run last December.I stopped for gas and noticed a dude in a SUV gunning it out of the parking lot. The situation dawned on me when the wife of a nearby black truck ran through the snow chasing the SUV. That's when I noticed the damage on the black truck.

Because I had the dash cam running there was fresh video footage of the offenders SUV ,which the responding officer & victims were grateful to receive.

Richard -

Either of the below are the ones you want.
https://www.amazon.com/SpyTec-A119-Logger-1440p-Camera/dp/B01HN0HBFG
https://www.amazon.com/Street-Guardian-SG9665GC-microSD-Supercapacitor/dp/B00U0OJMYG

the one you purchased is a junky toy at best. beware of amazon reviews - 3.4/5 is actually fairly terrible given how amazon aggregates their reviews, the quality of their reviewing base and the large # of pseudo-shills on the site.

consider figuring out what you would like to do with your airstream as well - 360 video coverage would be a good thing.

my cars have rear backup cams integrated as part of their infotainment system - on the trucks/suvs (taller so better FOV) I was able to have a local car AV guy splice in a device which allows for recording of the stream from the built-in backup cam in lieu of needing a separate or rear facing dashcam.

I'm also in rental cars with some frequency so a pair of go pro sessions get mounted and turned on when i know i'll be driving in more congested/accident prone areas.

Rich, I've got the same camera you have and it's been running for more than a year even after baking in the sun. That said, I know it's far from the best unit. I wasn't sure if I would really want to run one all the time, but I'm sold on them now. What I would like is fore and aft cameras.

Also did you try a different adapter?

No, it had power, screen just froze. This happened both with the 5V USB cable to the PC as well as the 'power cord' to the 12V. I'm not really known for a lot of patience lol, so it's on its way back to Amazon.

I'm sure it must work great for some folks (e.g. Hambo) which is cool, but my sample of one however wasn't up to scratch.

Anyway, moving on.

Now looking at the Garmin LMT51, due to be released shortly. $329, but only on pre-order from Amazon. It seems to be a Nuvi with a dash cam and other bells and whistles. I've owned several Garmin products, very happy with them.

I am a big fan of the Garmin GPS'. It is too much trouble for me to
have two items on my windshield which need power. I am actually very
excited that their newest GPS has a built in DashCam and some features
to utilize it.

I've been using this one for over a year now:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JJ3SQRI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only issue I've noted thus far is some times after unplugging it, the unit spazzes out by coming on and turning off immediately for a few minutes. Otherwise no issues. Good video quality and the audio is good too.

I talk to my dash cam, like saying aloud the physical description, tags, etc of a poor/rude/aggressive motorist.

I have the G1W (this "blackbox" unit (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HMNFWYW/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=ratio07-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00HMNFWYW&linkId=c223e38bef0a8d2175accb44c265db0e), works perfectly) and the tiny Mobius (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DP1WYD2/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=ratio07-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00DP1WYD2&linkId=2b11d9edd80e6d8f588c322af42de5b0). The Mobius has been unreliable, however I do believe that the last firmware update has fixed this. The G1W worked out of the box, I was actually impressed with it. Added a 64gig card and plug'n'play.

With any dash cam, I recommend paying more attention to it than I do my Glocks :D All that means, is check it a week or at least every two weeks, make sure it's recording as it should.

Yeah I do that, as well as what LL does. One of the most frequent phrases in my car is "Nice turn signal, numb nuts!"

I keep the audio on just in case I'm ever involved in some shooting stemming from some dipwad with road rage, I want any exchanges recorded to cover my ass.

Good idea, I would not have thought of that use for audio.

Our application is generally long distance driving, and the only time I feel a little twitchy is pulling into service stations for fuel. I'll make a mental note to document anything of interest on the way in.

Back to my original dash cam order from Amazon: I've seen now a couple folks post good results with "my" unit, but I have also seen in some of the comments on Amazon that there are "fake" or counterfeit systems out there. Looking at the one LL posted, it's by a company called "Black Box". Price is actually lower, interestingly.

Maybe it's a case of which manufacturer you end up with.

In my case, although I ended up sending it back, the ergonomics and design approach were ok, it just failed to perform as a result of componentry selection (my guess as to why my system would not boot up reliably was a faulty/poorly seated or inserted chipset on the substrate of the installed circuit board. Generally, lower price point products end up choosing components with much wider manufacturing tolerances.)

Looking ahead, I submitted a request to be notified of the release of the $329 Garmin LMT51 unit. I am like nycnoob; I don't want a third device on the windshield if possible. I already have a Garmin Nuvi we use sometimes, and a TST 507 TPMS for monitoring the travel trailer's tire pressure and temperature.

I personally wouldn't spend that much on a dashcam given the plethora of great units at half the price out there, but I can't fault you if that is how you want to go about this. However, I wouldn't be waiting on one, sans having a dash cam right now. I couldn't imagine driving without one.

Narrating the event is a good practice. It establishes what is occurring that may not visible due to camera angle, lighting, and image quality. It's more credible than pointing those things out after the fact, when many would lie or embellish in their favor. We'll see cams as standard equipment in cars in the near future, along with discounts and surcharges from the insurance industry to incentivize their use. There is some amazing technology out there, and full 360-degree coverage with good low light imagery is within reach.

I've done this a few times, and practice to do this when people record me in the course of duty.

Remember that when someone else watches the video, they don't know how fast a person is going relative to others on the road. If there are smells or odors, etc.

Yup yup yup, totally get it. In this case, I don't really mind paying 6X the lower price point. My use is potentially 24/7 across the US and my access to convenient retail locations or mailing drop points for warranty service is limited. So, a reliable unit that functions without issue is of interest to me; plus, I have additional things on the windshield already (the TPMS) that most folks would probably not have.

Absolutely agree on the dash cam usefulness; I've been pondering this for a while and concluded that I don't want to be without one. I'm optimistic the Garmin unit will be available soon; the User Manual published on their website is dated January 2017.

Wound up not getting it as I got called to help someone and forgot about it. It also occurs to me that the night vision might encourage me to attempt to do ill advised things. :)

B&H photo shows that this should ship in about 2 weeks.
Also it looks like the only difference between the 51 and the 50 is
the smartphone data receiving features. If you are not going

On my car, I bought a Chinesium 12v -> USB power module (like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Converter-Module-convert-adapter-DCCON-5U-0/dp/B00BMIVFK8/). I found a 12v wire in my overhead driver's info console, tapped into that and a ground, and tucked it inside the housing. I had bought a 2nd housing from a junkyard in case I had to drill a hole for the cable, but it tucked neatly between the bezel and the headliner.

about the same as any radar detector, standalone gps or phone mount...

i think generally the central, high windshield mounting location does allow for more chance of it being shot straight back in the middle of the vehicle.

not sure one would guard against this though, other than perhaps an anchor/tether of some sort (rearview mirror adhesive to little anchor to ziptie to another anchoring point on the device)

So this arrived just now, two days from Amazon Prime.

I must say, at the start, it appears to be a very good product.

The packaging reminds me of the way they ship Apple iPhones. The box is sturdy and well fitting, the main component (camera) is packaged well and nicely padded. The rest of the (mainly) cables are in separate baggies underneath.

Fit and finish on the main unit appear on par with a good-quality digital camera. It is made of plastic, and, although it is obviously plastic, is not a low-quality or sub-par material.

The supplied USB connector is also nicely finished, and (bonus) includes an additional 5V USB jack. Nice. The micro-USB plug inserts firmly and stays put.

I inserted the supplied 32 Gb TF card (another bonus, some cameras come with 4 Gb) and powered it locally here at my laptop. It powered up and I was able to set the date / time. I left it charging for about 5 minutes, then disconnected power for 10 minutes. When i powered it on next, the date and time setting was retained. Good.

I'll be testing this in the truck in the next few days. Overall I'm fairly impressed.

The Z-edge comes with a nice card and it overwrites the oldest video file so that's good.

I also went through the settings and tried out different types to see what I liked the best and ended up using the 720@60fps setting as I'd much prefer 60fps over 30fps. 2k is nice but in the dark 60fps is just better for viewing, which is the point of the DVR to be able to see all the little details on playback.

I did make sure the camera screen turns off setting was on. I don't like looking at the camera LCD screen being lit and it also allows battery to conserve.

Video duration is 3 minutes, not five, easier to mess with the files on a computer. Super Fine quality setting.

Both parking monitor mode and delay off mode are on. They both work.

Update on my $60 Little Lebowski model. I haven't pulled it out of the truck since it was really hot last summer, and I haven't checked any video. Today a big bobcat crossed in front of me and I wanted the video so I pulled the card. Still good to go.

My only complaint is that they suck for wildlife because the focus is so close to the front of the vehicle. That's not what I bought it for, but I'd consider an upgrade that didn't make 25 yards away look like 250.

Its the fisheye effect. Middle focus looks further to slow the sides to be in focus.

Thanks VDM, I'll update my settings tomorrow.

One other comment on the Unit - it came with several stick-on wire clips to assist in locating the power cable around the windscreen edge. Nice touch.

Like I said stuff.

Figure out what setting you want for your specific application. For me 60fps works best for all applications.

So I grabbed the Z Edge unit out of the truck this morning, I wanted to see how accessible the video was.

I attached it via the short USB cable to my Acer Windoze 10 laptop. All the video showed up in a folder on my d: drive called "NORMAL". It was sequential time-and-date stamped *.MOV files, each approximately 122Kb (1 minute duration, default setting).

The 32Gb card is about 10 Gb used, this is after a couple days running errands for maybe an hour or two (have not kept a log.)

I set the video duration to 3 minutes. The one minute playback chunks seem kinda short for the way we're going to drive.

I'm surprised how sharp the image is for a little camera, I tried to grab a photo below coming back from the gym this morning. I like the wide format. This is at the default settings for video.

So far so good. I like this unit.

Pull some video after driving at night and then see if you need to mess with the settings.

Once thing which seems to be a common issue across 95% of the car dvr's is that it is nearly impossible to get a clear license plate read, especially if it is a white plate, at night due to the whiteout/washout from the headlamps.

I have gotten into the habit of saying the tag out loud if I think for whatever reason the vehicle will do something stupid.

I will, thanks.

I left the default of 1920x1080x30 fps. The manual says 280 minutes recording time for a 32Gb card, I'm ok with that.

Oh, and I dunno what I was thinking; the one minute video clips are 120Mb apiece, not 120Kb.

VDM you should ask Z-Edge for a referral bonus because I got one and mounted it in my Jeep today. My thoughts on the packaging match Rich's. Small package with a lot in it!

I pulled moldings and ran the USB cable through the dash and around the windshield. The cable drops out and hugs the factory wiring to the Jeep's rear view mirror. I met the wife at Outback for Valentines dinner and it ran superbly. I need to take it inside and check the recordings. Thanks for the setting suggestions.

Mine's working well enough after a few days, I'm going to go ahead and route the power supply cable more or less permanently.

I did check the process for saving an "event". You just hit the menu button (lower left) while recording, and there results in a 64Mb file saved off in the EVENT folder off the root. So that seems to work.

One issue I've had is that the level of the recorded Audio seems very very low. I've been playing back a few files trying to hear the conversation in the truck without much success. I've got both playback and source audio levels all the way up, and I can barely make out my wife (right seat) but my voice is next to impossible to hear.

Otherwise, I'm pretty pleased overall, and at the $110 price point, it gives me a lot of peace of mind to have.

Last night, I was sitting at a stop light behind the line, and a whole line of schmucks turned left in front of me, coming kinda close to my bumper. Not, with a 7,700 lb truck, it would make much impact on me. :) But it was nice to have a video if anything happened.

I'm going to get one. Last night, driving back from the range after practice, I'm northbound on Route 33 in the left lane for the merge onto I-80 west, when I notice headlights in front of me. There's an intersection up ahead for 611 and a shopping mall, but I didn't recall ever seeing headlights aimed right at me so I take my foot off the gas and quick check my rear views. Flash back to the dark ages before the internet when vendors like Police Bookshelf and Paladin Press were the publishers of arcane knowledge who advertised in the gunzines and a much younger me bought a book, more like an over glorified pamphlet, about driving in dangerous salutations like ambushes and stuff and even practiced unbeknownst to his parents in his dad's '78 Dodge Colt. You know, bootlegger's turns, J-turns, and this thing where you change lanes fast by criss-crossing your arms back and forth, that I never really understood the value of until last night when I got to do it for real, at speed in a Chevy Suburban. Good times. Glad I put new shocks in all around and fixed the air suspension. Anyway, unless I hear differently, I'm ordering a Z-edge this afternoon. Should have listened to you guy and I would have been able to just post a video.

Picked up a Garmin Dashcam 35 a couple months ago. It's decent. (There are new 45/55 models now with upgraded resolution, voice control, and wifi connectivity.) I keep it mounted just to the right of my rear-view mirror; it's fairly difficult to see from outside the vehicle, which I like from a theft-prevention perspective.

My one complaint is that the mini-USB cord/12V adapter it ships with is proprietary, meaning it provides power only. If you want a longer cable, and you use a regular mini-USB cable, the camera will think it's connected to a computer and will ask you if you want to use the device in mass storage mode every time you start your car. This means having to press a button to exit out of that mode and begin recording. Pain in the ass. You have to spring for the overpriced Garmin extended cable if you want the camera to automatically begin recording when you start your car.

I followed this thread earlier in the year, because the use of a dash cam made a lot of sense to me. Since then I've bought and tried three units and sent two back to Amazon.

I've settled on a Falcon Zero F360 which runs for about $150 at Amazon. The others I tried were less expensive. It took me a while to get it set up and running the way I wanted and I struggled with how to view the resulting videos from the included 32GB SD card. I figured out that I needed to download the free VCL video app, and have had no problems since. I emailed their support a couple of times and they were very helpful. I like the fact that it has both forward and rear camers, and it installs very easily and firmly over the rear view mirror.

I've been using the original one in my car for a little over a month and moved it to my wife's car this morning since I know its configured the way I want it and functions as it should. I've just ordered a new one which I'll set up in my car when it arrives.

I'd already bought the first unit, and was in NM visiting our youngest daughter and I was discussing it with her and my son-in-law. She drives back and forth very frequently from Santa Fe to Albuquerque on I-25 (she's third year Law at UNM) and had an incident where a car moved into her lane, bumping her car in the side and doing considerable damages....no injuries. It turned out both drivers has State Farm, so SF paid them out of their own policies since it couldn't be proved who was at fault.

If she'd had a dash cam, it would have clearly showed that she was properly in her own lane when her car was struck, and she would have collected against his policy. She'll now have a "ding" on her coverage cost.

I don't believe so...hard to describe but the "tone" of the Falcon RVM is darker than the factory mirror and I haven't had any problems in that area.

Both of our cars have a "compass" feature.....shows a lighted direction letter within the RVM....NSEW etc....and of course that is covered up by the Falcon unit. I personally didn't use it that often, so I haven't missed it.

An observation and a few questions?

One, I pulled it off the windshield and discovered that the disk was full since 7/31, and was not auto overwriting. Hmmm.

I reset it and reformatted the drive. Will need to check this in a few days.

1) Does anyone have a good, non-marring method for attaching the cable to the windshield? The provided sticky squares seem to be failing.

2) Has anyone found a more permanent mirror mount for the camera unit in place of the rubber suction cup? The rubber on mine is falling off the glass every once in a while.

Double check the settings are set to overwrite, if it doesn't overwrite there are a few different possibilities, easiest fix is to check the settings after reset/reformat.

I shove the cable into the dash, then into the A-pillar plastic with the blunt end of a pen. If you have one of those plastic electronics wedge pusher things (I can't remember the name) that'll work too. I shove the rest into the head liner in front of the camera.

The suction cup will lose suction in extreme heat and cold. One thing I found is that if you use windex (or the like) to clean the windshield and the suction cup itself, then put a very small amount of windex on the inside of the suction cup, spread it around with your finger and then attach it to the windshield, move it around in a small circular motion for a bit and then leave it - that worked for me. If it continues to fall off, use less amount of windex when mounting.

After having tried a handful of random no-name chinese DVRs, I switched all my vehicles over to Anker Roav Dash Cam C1s (http://amzn.to/2x7vjkc). I've been using them for a few months and they are excellent. They have an interface I can actually understand and use, a companion smart phone app that connects to the camera via the Wifi (not through an access point, but directly to the camera itself) that allows me to download video and adjust settings. They attach to the windshield via mounts secured with 3M VHB tape (which is amazing stuff and good since suction cup windshield mounts aren't legal in NM).

I read in the Amazon comments that many people with the suction cup either put the foam 3M mounting tape on the suction cup or remove the rubber and permanently attach the mount to the glass. Mine came with a mount that is supposed to permanently attach to the windshield but the clear rubber tape gets soft in the heat and sags. When I get annoyed with it I'm planning on switching to the foam 3M mounting tape which doesn't look as pretty but sticks like it's supposed to.

ETA, the Z3 is an Amazon Lightning Deal today, but only for about another half hour.

Ohh, ok now I get what you are saying, you are citing the "obstruction of windshield" codes.

The only time a dash cam will expressly be included in this is if you mount it directly in your field of vision and/or "your side" of the windshield. If you mount it behind the rear view mirror you are in compliance with whatever local/state traffic code may be applicable, also no one should ever stop you for having a suction cup in that particular area.

Just installed the C1 Pro in my car. Took me around 20-30 minutes. Hardest part was locating the power cord one I removed my a pillar trim piece and snaked it into the dash. Lots of wires for it to hide in behind the dash. Once that was done everything else was easy. I’m going to try it for a bit and if it works as well as it appears to the wife’s car will get one too.

Still using my G1W, though I came close to canning it earlier this year. Thing kept losing date and time settings. But when I’m getting close to the “had enough” point it starts acting right. Stupid thing has fallen from the windshield a dozen or so times over the course of ownership, but video is still exceptional quality and the audio is clear and understandable.

Some units have front and rear cameras. The one I have is the S-3 linked in the previous post which is OK but the rear camera is poor in low light.

I don't know anything about the unit you have. What I like about the stuff from Anker/Roav is that I can actually understand and use the menus/buttons. On previous non-Anker units I had, I simply hated the mystery-meat interface. I literally could never figure it out and was always hitting the wrong (and unlabeled) button. But beyond having a usable interface, it has a smart phone app that allows me to basically only use the Dash Cam interface to switch it into wifi mode -- from there I do everything from my phone.

Tom - How has the adhesive mount worked out for you in ABQ?

For my situation this would be a real plus.

I’ve had the viofo a119 in my company vehicle for a year and a few months now. Running a Lexar 64G memory card.

The adhesive Mount is so good it had to stay with my old vehicle when the company upgraded me last month. Went with the suction cup version to replace it.

For me it does exactly what I need it to. No issues with it

No sweat, I was just wondering of there was some secret squirrel Amazon page I was missing. We went with the Rexing VLG1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071LPV7G6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)for the wife's car, as I wanted her to have the rear view camera as well. Most common negative comment is that the commercial tape that comes with it is too strong, so we got some heavy duty Velcro instead...

Any recommendations on a smooth discreet way to power a dash cam without running an ugly wire to the 12v outlet?
Some reasonably possible self install way to wire it into the car?

I’d run wire to the fuse box and use a fuse tap. https://www.wirthco.com/fuserelatedaccessories/fusetapsforoccupiedslotsinfuseblocks.html

If there is a fuse in the lighter plug that you will not be using, it would be good to add a similar in-line fuse to your new wiring.

Check Amazon to see if there's a direct-wire assembly available for your model. There is one for the model I linked to in the post immediately before yours.

Earlier in the thread, someone suggested:

Autek DC Converter Buck Module 12V convert to 5V usb output power adapter(DCCON-5U-0)

to hook up to a convenient 12V key-switch source. Just don't do what I did and do the install at night and find out that the 12v wire you hooked to is part of the automatic illumination system.

Ordered, and installed last week.

https://youtu.be/x55skX12HKU

Very happy with the fit and finish and camera coverage of this unit. Install was a breeze, just peel the VHB sticker off and press in place. I ran and inserted the power cable easily; it tucked easily into the headliner with the included crevice tool. (nice touch, Roav.)

I enabled the WiFi to broadcast the AP all the time; I wanted it set that way so I could see video immediately on the IPhone app. This works, albeit at a lower data rate than I was hoping for (anywhere from 100 kbps to 2 Mbps, actual.) A 1 minute file takes approximately 60 s to download.

I left most of the defaults as is, except for the beep, and setting the video loops to 1 minute length.

Very happy with this purchase.

Nifty. When mine bites the dust I might get one like that with WiFi capabilities to view the video immediately versus having to pull the card back at home.

Sometimes I regret leaving the audio recording on...

“Go idiot!”
“F***ing Atlanta drivers”
“Put your phone down and put your foot down”
“The left lane is for passing only!!!”

The downside to disabling audio is if you're ever involved in something, or see something go down, and you want to verbally record a license plate or description (say of a fleeing vehicle or person) before stopping to help or if your vehicle is disabled in a crash, you can't do so with sound off. You're left to repeat the license plate number out loud (my technique) until you can get to your phone and text it to your spouse. Your camera might not have the angle, magnification or resolution to catch everything that's important.

It's easy enough to edit out the audio if the video is ever needed.

One of my Roav dash cams appears to be a brick now. Past the 12 month warranty and the cam in my wife’s car appears to be complete dead. I went to go check out a single car accident she witnessed today and it won’t power at all. Swapped it to the cable in my car and nothing. Anybody have this issue? I’m guessing for how inexpensive they are they are pretty much disposable.

I recently switched cars and need to replace the Roav C1 mounting pad that was the worse for wear when I removed it from the old car.

I’ve contacted Roav CS and they indicated that the replacement adhesive mounts were out of stock.

Anyone know of a good source for an aftermarket adhesive mount that would fit a Roav C1 Pro camera? I’ve been searching last few days but come up dry.

I will say our C1 Pros download to the phone (via the ROAV App) via the built in wifi works fairly well; albeit somewhat slowly. A 1 minute video file will take about 1 minute to download, for example.

Interesting concept, though I don’t want a cabin-facing lens.

My need for a dual camera however are for two separate viewing angles ( ie, one mounted in opposite corners of the windscreen, giving a good view of the fender-mounted mirrors as well as the road ahead) without having to run two separate systems.

Ah...ok.

I’ve never actually come across a forward facing two camera system.

The C1 Pro I have has a FOV of 145°, or plus minus 72.5° of Center on each side. What is your requirement in terms of angle?

I have a C1 Pro which is en route to me now.

What i’m wanting is to have a clear view of vehicles alongside/to the rear of me, as well as to the front. Viewing angle isn’t terribly important, as much as the need to document the behaviour of malicious motorists as they attempt to pass/swerve/cut off, etc.

Ideally, it’d be a three camera setup, with cams mounted on the hood or mirrors point rearward and the central camera looking forward, that would all record to one main ‘brain’ which I could download a three ‘panel’ clip of to my phone.

After using the Garmin 35 since early 2017, a couple months ago I upgraded to the 66W (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/661787) and added a Mini (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/621281/pn/010-02062-00) in the rear window. Having WiFi connectivity to both is quite nice, although the download speed is dreadful. The app allows you to do picture in picture when downloading (see below). My dislike for the 66W is that the windshield mount is not as solid as on the 35. Specifically, I'm referring to where the mount interfaces with the camera. On the 35, there was no play in the mount at all. On the 66W, there is just a tiny bit of wobble. In actual use, this does not seem to cause any shakiness in the recorded video, but it is still a minor annoyance to me.

From this thread:

After having tried a handful of random no-name chinese DVRs, I switched all my vehicles over to Anker Roav Dash Cam C1s (http://amzn.to/2x7vjkc). I've been using them for a few months and they are excellent. They have an interface I can actually understand and use, a companion smart phone app that connects to the camera via the Wifi (not through an access point, but directly to the camera itself) that allows me to download video and adjust settings. They attach to the windshield via mounts secured with 3M VHB tape (which is amazing stuff and good since suction cup windshield mounts aren't legal in NM).

I used the supplied tool and pushed the USB cable under the headliner and assorted plastic panels. No adhesive cable hanger doodads necessary.

Also, the camera itself doesn't look like a piece of shit, which matters to this unabashed Apple fan. :)

Two thumbs up! Highly recommended. :)

The Anker Roav C1 Dash Cam (https://amzn.to/2uj0ZQV) is an Amazon Deal of the Day today and it's $60. This is what I've been using for the last year or so and I'm extremely pleased with it.

My car stays parked outside facing due east and gets hotter than hell. No issues at all with the mount or dash cam, it’s rock solid.

I installed one in my wife's Chrysler 200 and there was quite a bit of cable left over. The website says it's 3.5m long, so right at 11.5'. Take a bit of string, run it along how you'd route the cable, measure the string. If it's 11' or less, you should be good to go assuming the website measurement is correct.

Q3: How long is the power cord?
The included power cord is 3.5m.

I’ve had two C1 Pros on four cars over the last two years here in FL. Currently one in my daily driver, as well the other in Mrs. RJ’s 2019 Cayenne. The supplied cable is plenty long for her car. Zero issues w the adhesive.

Only comment is that the WiFi download speed off the camera to my iPhone is painfully slow. A 1 minute video file takes approximately 1 minute real time to download.

Otherwise I am extremely happy.

Not sure if this is what you meant, but I did not have a terrific experience with one of the 'dash mount' plug in wireless cameras that attached to the bumper.

It came in two pieces, one small TV screen that communicated to a license plate mounted oblong camera unit. The camera was battery powered, the TV was a plug in 12V standard plug.

The fact the camera only had battery may have driven this, but the display resolution (scan lines) was very poor (perhaps 320x200) and the data rate for frame to frame update rate was very slow, relative to OEM dash cams.

It was better than nothing I suppose, and it was useful, but a far cry from an OEM solution.

That was about 2 years ago so I am sure things have improved.

I keep a couple of dry erase markers in my overhead sunglass compartment. They work great for writing notes/directions on the windshield.

I ended up ordering and installing this one for my truck: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FQM3V3J/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?

$149, but with a $40 coupon at the moment. I have a Ram quad cab and the cable they sent for the rear facing camera was *plenty* long enough. I'd say you could string it through a mini-van with no issue. It comes with a memory card, little installer tool, all the cables required, and the mount. The mount has a suction cup that's also sticky. It's sticky enough it stays in place even before you throw the lever to apply the suction. I haven't had an essential travel since installing it this afternoon, but just in the driveway in "park" mode it looks like decent playback capability.

I'm getting ready to sell my old Suburban and debating if I should go to the trouble of taking our the S3 and installing it in the new (to me) SUV or upgrading. I'm leaning toward upgrading as the one you have linked looks neat the humidity outside is like 110% and the dog thinks my time would be better spent throwing the ball for him.

I’m beginning to think current events makes having a dash cam a wise precaution. I was just looking for systems that cover 360 degrees, I’m not sure there are many, although a few seem to allow you to slave multiple cameras to one app. This is going to take research, I think.

Mrs. Rich and I were having this exact conversation on the way to lunch today in her SUV. Our current ROAV C1 Pro model has worked well for on the order of two years now in Florida. I have the same model in my car. My wife and I went through some options in terms of being able to articulate a credible threat in court, i.e. what would cause you to conclude you were being or about to be harmed. Seems like a camera facing the driver like this would be a real asset for establishing the record. Shame you have to think about, but I guess these are the days we live in. Doesn't matter 'why' some asshole is beating your window in with a hammer while 5 other people are kicking in your doors, but maybe they are. So one needs to have a plan to deal with it.

So I looked at dual camera options, and since I have had a positive experience with this company, identified this model with both a forward facing and rearward camera:

https://goroav.com/collections/desktop-cam/products/dashcam-duo

If I was in the market at the moment, I would probably be getting one of these. I think the importance of outward facing picture is obviously paramount in the event of an auto accident; but these days, with the distinct possibility of being caught up in an incident, one that covers the driver would be good. You'd have a record of exactly what the context was as seen looking towards you.

Something like that with the ability to continuously upload to the cloud via your phone would be just about perfect for my needs, especially for the Miata. The big issue I see with this one is that you have to pull the memory card to get the files. I’d prefer them be automatically be stored offsite in real time.

Edit - I wonder if this would meet my requirements? Time to dig in.

Yeah...that'd be a fair old amount of data, as well as put a decent load on your cell phone connection.

Video streaming a HD signal typically is on the order of needing a 5 Mbps connection. So you are talking realtime streaming at that data rate, up to a cloud-based service to host the video, just for the camera. In addition, you'd need to connect (wirelessly?) the camera to the phone...I'll be honest, based on accessing my ROAV unit with the app from my iPhone, the connection is a little sketchy due to the low power of the camera WiFi access point, I am guessing. A video transfer from camera to phone takes about real time (i.e. a video that's one minute long, takes about a minute to transfer). Continuously, that's a chunk of data every hour every minute you are driving, as well as a decent amount of data once it plops onto the server. And what would the designers do in the event a subscriber did not have cell coverage? Probably put a data card in the camera anyway. Not saying impossible, but I'm not sure the market interest is there at the moment. My sense is the ubiquity of ever larger on-board video cards and on-the-spot downloads will be around for a while yet.

Be interested if you find anything.

Yeah, could be. But what about the people without phones? How do you market this product to them?

But to be honest, the wide availability of canned ‘camera’ ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits)/chipsets compete with even a WAP (Wireless Access Point) for integrators at pennies per 1K quantities to the factories that assemble these products, there’s probably not really a market to develop something like this. Especially with memory always getting cheaper. I haven’t looked in a while but my camera uses a 32G card; I’m sure they are probably coming with 128 Gb or even higher.

So I dunno.

Unless I'm an Uber driver, I'm not seeing the upside for recording the interior. In the context of an auto accident, I just see the downside. I'm sure there is a potential upside; maybe capturing a car jacker's attempt? I'd be curious to hear your (or others') thoughts on this.

I like the idea of interior recording for just that reason - to record carjacking and wilding attempts to document that my reaction was appropriate.

I had to replace the mount. It lost it's stickiness/air tightness and would fall off after a few days. I bought a new suction mount and no issues there. The battery doesn't hold much charge, and it draws a surprising amount of power if you leave it plugged in to a battery source. I leave it plugged in to a keyed source and don't really care how long the 'sentry mode' lasts, I just want it for driving.

Other than those minor issues, no concerns or problems.

A very timely bump as a reminder to get a dash cam stat.

Thankfully no contact was made, but this could have turned bad fast and I'm glad I would have proof this guy was the aggressor.

I was driving on 93 North into Boston and this area almost always has traffic ranging from stop and go to max 40 MPH most days. It is rare to reach the speed limit for this section of highway.

I noticed a guy in a Dodge Challenger SRT behind me start to make animated hand motions for what I assumed was general frustration with the disaster that is this section of highway. I commented to the wife about him and laughed. Apparently he was mad at me for some reason. As we continue to drive he starts flashing me and carrying on like an idiot. I'm confused as there is no way to go faster given the traffic, but after a few minutes of behaving like a moron, I moved over a lane to let him harass the next guy. Apparently he was mad about this so he pulls over in front of me, brake checks me and slows to almost a complete stop. After trying to get into an accident with me he accelerators away and almost spins his car causing another accident and proceeds to drive like an ass into the distance.

Get a dash cam!!! It definitely felt more intense in person then on video. As was said before, don't let perfection be the enemy of good enough. Mine is a Aukey DRO2 unit that isn't listed on Amazon anymore that I bought back in July of 2020 for around $60.

If I wasn't quick on the brakes, I would have rear ended him when he brake checked me and would have looked at fault without video proof.

I bought an XL F150 that didn't have a backup camera. I ended up buying a unit that replaced the factory rear view mirror. It has a forward facing camera and a rear facing camera to mount near the license plate. The camera takes a micro-SD card for recording and you can view the saved recordings on your cell phone if you install the app.

Overall I'm happy with it with some caveats. The camera has a lead you can tie to the reverse lights to angle the camera down. The angle is extreme and only useful if you're trying to connect a trailer. I ended up disconnecting the reverse trigger as it made the rear view camera useless for backing. If the wire run weren't so long, I've thought about putting a switch on the dash to trigger that wire so I could have the option to aim the camera down when needed. Had I known when installing, I could have easily run a wire.

There are two power wires, one for constant 12 volt (+) and one for an ignition trigger. If you're doing a quick install and tie both to constant hot, it will drain your battery all the way down. I wired it properly and haven't had any more problems.

Ran this combo until October of last year. The only issue I had with it was that the sync between the two cameras would get out of whack. Not sure if that was because the Mini lacked GPS and therefore lost track of time, or something else. No issues with heat baking either of the cameras despite my car being parked outside 24/7 in South Florida. Anyway, I switched vehicles in October 2021 and for now I am running just the 66W in the front. I have a 57 on the way which will take the 66W's place in the front windshield, and the 66W will move to the rear window. The 57 has a 140° FOV compared to the 180° of the 66W (and its successor, the 67W). The fisheye lens adds a bit of distortion, which I'm hoping to get away from with the 57. Overall, I'm happy with the quality of the Garmin lineup.

Since I changed vehicles recently, I was interested in maybe buying a new dash camera to replace my ROAV C1 Pro. I looked at current options but didn't finding anything better. So I just reset the C1 Pro and installed it on the front window of the truck with some heavy duty double back black Velcro. I could not get the ROAV slide-on mounting pad off the old car, so I had to leave it. I hope this pad keeps it in place, but I'm concerned about the high heat on the windscreen. We'll see.

The C1 Pro still works well enough, I set it for 1,440 x 30 fps recording at 1 min intervals. A drawback is the video down load from camera to phone takes real time (a 1 min recording takes about 1 min to download to my phone.)

I'm looking heavily at the Garmin mini 2 dashcam. The appeal being the higher probability of reliable software support and the tiny form factor over most of the other generic chicom options on Amazon.

I'm less concerned about its 1080p resolution. Should be good enough for my needs.

For that one time (or more) that you will really need this device to do it's job, spend or actually invest a little more and get a good unit.

I posted this in the wrong thread this morning and after thinking about it, maybe this thread is better than Daily BS?

Bottom line..... Get a dash cam.

Spent yesterday serving on my first Civil Court jury. Got to see a sheister lawyer try and sell a trumped-up set of injuries by throwing around a bunch of inflated medical bills and making claims that were clearly refuted by the defendants dash cam video.

I sat there wondering whether any of the plaintiffs lies would have any traction on the jury. To my surprise I was the second-least pissed off about it, when we started deliberations. Even had some jurors asking about whether they could recommend perjury charges against the plaintiff and his lawyer.

Took us 25 minutes to deliver a verdict and most of that time was just folks venting about how they had their day wasted.

Still.... way less stressful than a Criminal Court trial.

Lesson: If you don't already have a dash cam, get one! The video made clearing the defendant a no-brainer.

What is the easy button for a low profile, quality dash cam? I’d prefer front and rear coverage, and don’t want suction cups and wires running everywhere - it would need to be a professional grade installation.

I think I found that easy button at Best Buy, and mashed it last night - a Garmin Mini 2. Apparently you can also run multiples. I’m going to mount it up forward facing for my upcoming road trip using the long cord, but there is a guy who makes adapters for the existing rear view mirror wiring to tap out a USB that I’m checking. Worst case is I’ll have Best Buy do a real install when I’m back.

I'm looking at this one also.

I was on my way home yesterday and saw something that was almost unbelievable. On a state highway in an area with one lane and a turn lane I see this jackass about 1/2 mile behind me closing at about 25 over the speed limit.....in a center turn lane. He was probably in that lane for at least a mile and passed about 40 vehicles including me. At one point he was on a hill with no visibility of anyone in that lane a ahead of him. Plus it was raining and the visibility was bad anyway. If I had a dash cam I would have zipped off a copy to the state patrol.

My take on this is there are people on the road with a death wish. Too bad they end up taking others out with them.

I never updated the thread.

I ended up mounting and wiring two Garmin Mini 2s, running the power cables to near the fusebox and installing a dual USB power supply to an unused switched fuse location. The wiring was actually super simple, it took maybe an hour total for both including the USB supply.

They each talk to the app and sync up. There are no wires to run between the cameras.

Well, the ROAV C1 Pro had some sort of brain fart, and rebooted itself the other day. I tried to reset it in the truck, and connect my phone to it, but no go. I brought it inside to get it physically reset using the push-pin, but it still will not connect. The WAP aspect of it seems odd; it exports itself as "roav_cam^^^^" instead of "roav_cam070b". So I think maybe the IC inside is fried out of it's mind. At any rate, I've been approved by the CFO to purchase another one.

Anyone have a good alternative in 2023?

I'd like at least the same resolution (1,440) and speed. I see Micro SD cards are now in the 256G range (mine has a 32G). I really would prefer a connection/download speed between the camera WAP and my phone to be faster than what the Roav offered. Video would download but it was almost real time slow; in other words a 1 minute dash cam video took almost 1 minute to download. Workable but annoying.
