View Full Version : Wanting to Win

This was posted on doodie and I thought this guy nailed some pretty good points. Keep your "wants" and what you actually practice for in focus, otherwise you're lying to yourself. I'm curious what people think.

Apparently he's some e-sports commentator but if you ignore the minor references to it here and there 99% of the content is applicable to shooting (or any competition).

Because despite the low brow humor the place actually does have up to date competitive wisdom sprinkled all over it ;)

Pistol-forum is great but this isn't my one stop shop for USPSA. You gotta diversify for that kind of content.

Could be, but you would need a screen door and a scoop shovel to sift thought all of the trash for one small jewel. Have you tried Brian Enos' forum?

But you get to watch porn, drink liquor, talk like a pirate and laugh your ass off while shoveling. :D

I had a thread locked on benos when I mentioned there was a presidential election and I congratulated Foley. I won't be back.

Off topic though, I'm more interested in the mindset crap I posted than forum drama ;)

I am not easily offended. They are funny as hell and don't take themselves too seriously. Some serious talent hangs out there. Good info you can't get elsewhere, including Benos. It is an interesting social experiment in self-moderation.

Not enough to get a screen name, but I enjoy two threads on Doodie. One by this guy "Doc," that focuses on female anatomy, and the training journal of Nwhpfan.

To the original subject of the thread: I have not bought in what the dude said. Maybe he's right, but he doesn't look to me like somebody who spoke from a first hand or even close second hand experience. That, and wearing parka and scarf in a studio.

I watch Doodie and it has gotten better. Good humor at times. Still low signal to noise, but it ain't high anywhere else.

Interesting that you say that. You may be right but I have a feeling he's spot on when it comes to the cream of the crop competitors.

Regardless it's gotten me off my ass for even more dry fire. I took to heart the "I don't care what you're going to do, what did you do to get to this point right now and if you failed, was that why?"

Welcome Guano. I see your username is appropriate. Back to the OP, shooters interested in the winning mindset would do well to read With Winning in Mind by Lanny Bassham. The book is also available in audio form for the reading challenged, and for Doodies.

I skim it once a month or so. They have a fixation with this place. It's more than a little odd but I've learned never to underestimate how catty grown men can be. Hopefully, I'll meet a few of them in person this year since it looks like I will be able to shoot more USPSA.

Yeah, har har har. I have no troll accounts at present. They all when down with the ship on Doodie 1.0. That was a sad day. I had some good ones.

The subject of cattiness: I think there's plenty of cattiness to go around in most corners of the shooting world. When we look at the sub-part of competition people being catty, I think a lot of that is because the competition world is composed of hard numbers on accuracy, time, and publicly-reviewable match placement and classifier records. Lots of people in general make authoritative but nebulous statements from positions of unverifiable experience, and lots of other people simply make up a bunch of unsupported garbage. Put all that together, and lies, embellishments, and misrememberings about accuracy, time, match placement, or classification are often easy to discern and clearly refute. That's talking generally, but I think that's a big part of the root of one specific type of cattiness in the shooting world. Imagine if the all internet claims were as easy to support or refute as those that stem from competition! The internet would collapse with so many claims crashing down.

I think the cattiness is not limited to the competitive shooting world nor the shooting world in general but rather a general online thing. Doodie is an interesting forum, it reminds me a lot of Gabe Saurez's WarriorTalk in that it's basically a marketing machine (not that there is anything wrong with that). The obsession over PF is odd but I suppose it gives them something to do. However, I think they got their forums mixed up with regards to tactical Timmy stuff (M4C) but all publicity is good publicity :D

Hopefully, I'll meet some Doodiers during this years USPSA season.

I haven't been on WarriorTalk in so long that I really don't know what it's like there now. I guess I see what you mean about a lot of people on Doodie being all over Ben's materials and things sold in his pro shop, but I've seen plenty of people there take loving and unloving shots at him too. My perception of the fixation on PF is that it is a direct result of bannings stemming from a discussion here, right before the first Doodie forum was founded and populated by those same banned people. I'd agree that M4C is even more Timmy than here, but we wear the mantle too. And proudly.

That's great you are going to get to some USPSA matches this year - I can't wait to hear about it! And I hope you meet all kinds of cool people. The Doodie guys I have met in person are some of my most favorite people to shoot matches with. Generally they are incisive and independent thinkers with a slightly warped sense of humor. My kind of people. Though surely that can't be everyone on Doodie, and the ones who are, you might not always be able to tell that about them from their forum posts.

I don't disagree with a thing you said except that though Ben allows shots to be taken at him, etc does not mean he's not trying use that forum to make money and that is FINE.

They have some false perceptions about the PF of now or even a year ago but oh well, their site traffic is a fraction of ours, and ours ain't a pimple on the ass of ARF :D

I've shot a few USPSA matches already, loved them! Just never had the time to attend them regularly as the closest one is at least 1.5 hours one way so that destroys one weekend day with my family.

Sure, I think that's true. Ben has a cool little empire going.

False perceptions over there are going to change over time. Perceptions like that are often at least a little behind. Now site traffic - also true, unless there is a good scandal going on. Then the traffic is through the roof. ;)

I sure hear you there. I frequently have to decide between a day 'off'/with family or a sorely needed match.

No, you are either overlooking or not aware of roughly 3-4 years of obsessive behavior regarding PF over there. It is public, readily viewable, and blindingly obvious.

Mods here are the shit.

In the old days, PF drama almost singlehandedly kept Doodie alive. With the light moderation touch now at PF, I don't think is much at PF to comment on over there. While I don't look at Doodie often, it appears there are more PF guys trolling Doodies than vice versa. This is not to suggest Doodie wouldn't jump on PF in a second, if there was good material, but mostly they need to survive on the normal suspects-- USPSA HQ, Enos and whatever Timmie is in the news. I think PF, for example, was tougher on Haley than Doodie.

I have a doodie troll account, but I suspect I'm not as hard to find as some others...:)

The elementary-school cafeteria food fight with F-bombs culture aside, I like Doodie. I'm only there, specifically, to learn how to shoot USPSA better. One can wade, knee deep, through the dross, and actually find guys who know what the heck they are doing. I started a shooting log there for my one match so far, and actually got some good suggestions.

Meh. :)

I was a mod for the Political Science section of a fancy pants German car forum during the 2012 elections. The handbag-swinging at 3 paces that took place on our forum between the Conservatives and the Liberals makes Doodie look like a knitting bee.
