I am looking for a low profile rifle bag that will fit my 16inch barrreled ar. I would like assembled but don't really mind if I have to break it down. I am going to be moving across the country soon and would like a low profile bag.
Lots of good, expensive choices. I an using a London Bridge 2 vets bag this weekend. On the cheaper end, Skinner sights sells a good value.

If you find the time, links would be awesome for the ones you recommend.
Couple options on this page. http://www.skinnersights.com/scabbards_20.html
I don't think the 2 vets is still being made, but it looks like some are on sale. http://www.2vetsarms.com/category-s/1828.htm

I have one of the old original Noveske bags, from the first run. Mine is grey, unmarked with no logos. The originals were made onshore by Eagle industries, I do not know if that is still the case.

HAHA. I wouldn't mind moving to Montana. I would miss the beach, but not the people. The grass is always greener on the other side my friend.
And it let me add one of those bags to my cart, but that's no guarantee they actually have it. Hope so, because that's literally the only place I see them listed for sale.

Sneaky Bags keep changing somewhat. Latest version (I have last gen) has handles for horizontal carry (a welcome addition IMO). For people who live in a city with people in close proximity, these are useful for coming-and-going while keeping a low-profile. The version I have looks a lot like a skateboard bag. The 36" version will hold a 16" AR with a carbine or A5 receiver extension and the butt stock collapsed.

I have a very old, original, mask easy bag that I love. The Spyder will probably be my next purchase if they come available in blue again.
FWIW, a 6920 is 32.5" with stock closed and 35.5" open, so the Spyder should fit just about any combination of aftermarket stock and muzzle device.

Double compartment tennis raquet bag always worked for me. A folding stock AK or seperated AR fit into it nicely. The second compartment fits chest rig and mags. It needs some stiffness though. I use closed cell foam or corrugated plastic voting signs cut to spec. Blackhawk makes a discreet option too. Vertex just came out with a garment bag that doubles as a rifle case.

I have found that tennis racket bags are not designed to take the weight of a rifle and small chest rig. Zippers and seams start to tear after a while.
Problem is, all purpose built bags are identifiable by anybody who does a little research. The necessity of selling the product means that there are photos of it and it's features out there. For the truly paranoid, I am sure some recognition scanning software could be set up to alert on any of the purpose built bags.
I think the most low profile bag is a bag built for some other innocent purpose that fits into your lifestyle seamlessly and does not provoke curiosity.

I have been using the Vanquest rackit covert rifle pack to take my Patrol Rifle to and from work for about the last year or so. I am impressed with the design and quality of the bag. Mine is the color in the picture, a grey and black combo. If I wanted to really change to outlook of the bag, I could stuff something like a windbreaker under the bungee cords on the outside.

When I go on vacation and drive by car (Gulf coast of Florida) I use a breakdown case to carry a Colt 6720. Simple and cheap. It doesn't turn any heads when going from the car to the condo.

If you can scrounge one from some local EMS guys, an old Iron Duck E-cylinder oxygen bottle carrier is very handy for carrying an SBR with a LAW Tactical folding stock adapter. And they do have them on fleabay as well.
If one is interested in "hiding in plain sight" you could even get a set of stencil's, and use Testor's white modeling spray paint to add "OXYGEN - NO SMOKING". You could likely carry that into a hotel or other place and barely get a second look. You younger folk could say it's for Grandma who is arriving soon.

I've owned two of the three. I have no experience with the Sneaky. But I started with the 5.11 covert bag. It needed the stock fully collapsed in order to get a 16" gun in the bag. The overall quality of the bag was, ok. Not great, just ok. It was build to where I always felt I needed to be careful so that I don't rip or tear anything. I gave it to my son who just needed something to get his AR from his apartment to his car and back during trips to the range.
I am about a year or so into the Vanquest, using it to take my patrol rifle to and from work. It's more substantial in it's construction and materials than the 5.11 bag. The little things about the design, such as the rings at the end of each zipper to aid in quick opening are vary nice. Having handles on all four sides is a very nice touch. The design of the sling actually works. The thing stays put on my shoulder and is comfortable when I carry the gun, a back pack, cooler (lunch box), coffee mug, and whatever else I'm dragging to work on a particular day.
I went online to Tactical tailor and bought a douple magazine pouch with velcro backing. I stuck this in the exterior pocket on the sewn velcro. Allows me to carry two extra magazines in the bag if I want. There's still a lot of room in the exterior pocket, in addition to the two 30 rd magazines.
The only reason I didn't get the Sneaky bag was the company has been hit or miss on actually producing their products. They stopped production for about a year. During that time frame, existing Sneaky bags were selling for a premium on line. I have heard why this occurred, but will not elaborate on the internet without confirmation.
The Vanquest was a newer product when I was looking at it on line. Watched a youtube video review, which I took with a huge amount of skepticism. So I called the company. Whoever it was that I spoke with was knowledgeable about his product and friendly in a customer service kind of way. I tok a gamble and bought one. Quick shipment and I'm satisfied with the product. Knowing what I know now, I'd buy a Vanquest bag again.

Thanks for the feedback. It's about what I'd expect from 5.11 I suppose.
I have an older Sneaky bag, and I've also seen them apparently come and go over the years. The one I have now is extremely well built. But, like you, it's hard to gibe with actually getting a bag.

For a low profile option, I use a TacTailor Covert Rifle Case (http://www.tacticaltailor.com/covertcarrycasedoublerifle.aspx). In grey and black, it doesn't scream gun, but it's still a full-size rifle case.
For a no-profile option, I am a really big fan of the MM/Emdom TNT Gym Bag (http://www.emdomusa.com/Emdom-MM-TNT-GYM-Bag-p/eu134.htm). It's a breakdown style case, and it really does look like a gym bag. I can fit a broken down 14.5" AR plus a chest rig inside the bag. It's what I usually use when traveling out of town with a rifle.

It's a really unique bag. The problem with most of the other "covert" options out there is that even if they don't look like a rifle case, they just look weird. Sneaky Bags makes nice stuff, I'm sure, but they just look unusual, case in point:

I like the look of that TNT. Would definitely make a good travel option that wouldn't raise the attention of family or other hotel guests.
All of these bags make a compromise between either looking "weird" or being a takedown. If you want to carry around a 36"-long rifle in one piece you're either getting a giant rectangle or a rounded-off rectangle in an effort not to look like a rectangle. I prefer the latter, but whatever floats your boat.
ETA:
My guess is "no", but I wonder if the GYM-E would hold a 16" AR or AK with folding stock.

I was not aware of the TNT gym bag. I really like the exterior low profile look. I also like that you can have a small chest rig in the same bag as the gun. While I still like the longer bags like my Vanquest or the Sneaky Bag for transporting my Patrol Rifle to and from work (I don't really want to have to separate the upper and lower twice per day) this TNT bag would be perfect for when I go on vacation or on long road trips.

Depending on the size, it might be mistaken for a skateboard or snowboard case. Would really suck if some doofus kid thinking he was stealing a board and aside from wondering why it was so heavy, wouldn't know he had a gun until he stopped to check it out.

Clearly, then, you're the only one that's done that....
Perhaps some of the rest of us have done the same thing and found those solutions lacking.
Something else to consider, for some people $187 is a day's wage for hard work, for some it isn't even an hour of phone calls.

This bag is from Castle Rock Tactical; although the company has vanished, not sure if the bag is being made by anyone else. 26" long, it has a velcro center divider, tie-downs with QR buckles, mag and accessory pockets on both inner sides, and can be carried either as a backpack or conventional bag.

I've carried an assembled AR-15 in a guitar case, and a broken down AR-15 in a REI duffle bag. They both worked fine.
The Emdom bag comes with features that you would have to source yourself with a cheap duffle. The Emdom bag includes a padded, zipper-enclosed sleeve that encloses the lower and keeps it separate from the upper. The bottom of the bag is lined with loop, and the sleeve has hook-covered flaps that allow it to be anchored in place at whatever angle the user desires. The end pockets of the Emdom bags are functional, yet the main compartment of the bag can expand into these pockets for increased volume without increased visual signature. Those features make it worth the cost, at least for me. (When I bought mine in 2013, I paid $140.)
An excellent accessory for this bag is the TopStop (http://raven-concealment-systems1.mybigcommerce.com/topstop-ar-upper-receiver-cover/) from Raven Concealment. Keeps your BCG in place and prevents lube from leaking out in your bag (and keeps gunk from getting into the upper). Obviously, this adds a step to reassembly of the rife, so you might want to avoid it if rapid deployment is a concern for you.

Will an aimpoint pro fit easily in the bag?

You could put a carry handle-mounted ACOG with RMR on top easily. There is plenty of room.

That topstop is interesting. Any idea when they came out with it? I've had the same thing from tacsol for many years now.

2013, according to this post (http://soldiersystems.net/2013/10/31/raven-concealment-systems-launches-the-topstop/) on Soldier Systems.
Well, I feel stupid. I completely forgot about the launch, as well as my questioning the origins back then. Never saw the response that was written to it till now, thanks Default!
I do like to see people get credit where it is due, and the guys at Tac-sol are really good people. Nonetheless, I would not have mentioned it if I had remembered that i already mentioned it, my bad.
Not sure if previously mentioned, but this stuff looks interesting:

So much good stuff in here; I thought I would bump it to the top.
A couple of my own thoughts, to add:
Camera tripod bags/cases, particularly video camera tripod bags/cases, look really interesting. I have seen some used photo/video equipment equipment for sale, with very nice bags/cases, but the bags/cases were not being sold separately. Of course, any type of equipment bag/case is a target for theft/burglary, so be cautious. And, of course, in/near any place that prohibits photography, known photo equipment logos will attract attention.
On guitar/musical instrument cases, there is etiquette regarding bringing musical instruments into some venues, so be ready with your plausible story. I know little about this, but have taken BMV reports from musicians, and learned about this when I asked why they left their expensive instruments inside their vehicles when parked in known high-crime areas near music venues.

I've been looking for a low profile bag as well. Nothing necessarily zero profile, but everything I have now is either obviously a rifle bag or is meant for two longer guns. Bags meant for traditional rifles are a poor fit with a light mounted to the sight base, and the big case is just... big and unwieldly for transporting a single carbine and maybe a few magazines. And the way this country is changing, perhaps a slightly more discrete transportation option would be nice otherwise as well.
My problem is that most discrete carrying cases for 16" AR-15's are designed so the rifle is carried stock collapsed. Well, due to certain local legal retardedness, collapsing stocks are not an option. Does anyone have any idea what (hopefully inexpensive) cases would be a good fit for a 16" carbine with about a 13" fixed stock?

Has anyone messed with non-instrument-shaped instrument cases?
Something like this SKB tenor sax case could fit a ~14" barrel with the stock collapsed.

Split the upper and lower apart, and you may be able to fit a 16-in. in an alto sax case.

The soft cases still have some structure to them. They don't scream "musical instrument" to someone who isn't a musician like a Selmer hard case does. They're theoretically designed to protect valuables through a lot of wear and tear. Would just have to customize the interiors.
Although something like this in a bit better condition would have style points once you got to the range.

Tool storage might also be an option, although it doesn't scream "don't steal me" and isn't exactly "grey man" in a lot of locations. But in other places, it could be totally innocuous, especially if you actually use it to carry tools for awhile and get it a little beat and dirty.

I've been carrying one of these (Craftsman branded) full of heavy metal stuff to race tracks, shops and off-roading areas for close to 20 years now:

Err, that would be a 13" length of pull fixed stock... Sorry for the mix-up.
