Start Position: Holstered or ready

This drill is a very short test intended to be shot cold, and the goal is to simply hit the target. This should be the first shot you fire, without prior dry or live practice in your range session. Start with your gun loaded and holstered if possible; if not allowed on your range, start from ready position of your choice instead. Target is shooter's choice: either a 3x5", 2" circle, or 1" square, at 7 yards. At the start signal, draw or present the gun from ready, and shoot one shot to the target. Record your time, and whether you hit or missed.

Equipment: Walther P99, JMCK IWB holster with 20 degree cant, starting position normal standing, concealment garments: two thick layers, closed front, drawstroke requires two hands and a snowshovel...
Target: 2" circle (I know for a fact that I can hit a 3x5 card from this range unless I yank the shot, so wanted to challenge myself a bit more)
Result: HIT! :)
Time: 3.10s (Told ya about the drawstroke...)

at a 3x5 card - 1.32 seconds. Miss dang it! So game over. I tried again not burning and next one in 1.51 was a hit.

It occurs to me to drill at this more. I'm striving to get two 2 on the 3x5 in <2.0 without much progress. Occurs to me that mentally I've been shooting 2 instead of two singles.

I just got the notion today that as I hit index my intent is to shoot two, instead of shooting one, then another one very quickly. It may stem from my 80s habituation of the hammer. I'm wondering if that mental approach is hanging up my physical execution. The hammer back in the day didn't take as much precision as these 3x5s

Gotcha. There are a number of older gentleman in the action pistol league I shoot at that have that problem. They hammer everything and always miss with their second shot. Can't talk them out of it though. Of course none of them are near being the shooter you or a lot of the guys here are.

I've posted before about my allegiance to the FAST as a great way to test ones pistol skill. I always shoot one cold FAST at the start of my range session. Always. So I combined two DotW's in one this time. Shooting my first cold shot onto the 3X5 as part of the FAST.

It was an epic failure.

2.25 sec, miss.

It went high over the 3X5. If you you look really closely, you can see it buried in the berm about three inches higher than it should be.:mad: You can read the rest of my tale of woe in the FAST DotW.

I'm one of those older gentlemen of whom you speak and the tendency to "hammer" two is hard to unlearn.

I start every range session with a cold run of the F.A.S.T. drill so I combined these two drills this week.

I tried this today, 7 yards 3x5 index card from OWB holster. Got a hit at 2.21 sec.

Observations: I need to work on this more, as I was really inconsistent and often going too fast for where I am now and missing low. Need to drill this more and learn what speed I can go at before I start milking.

I can't even begin to imagine how slow my draw and shot would be to a 1" square. It'd be like a 8 second shot.

Observations: Lack of consistency... tried an additional 4 times, 2 were faster then my first at 1.87, 1.79 and 2 slower at 2.25 and 2.34(didn't cleanly clear my coat) all with hits.

2 inch dot, a hit barely in 2.95 sec. Feels slower than usual due to poor indexing on draw, and almost missed (circled the shot on sheet)

Top sheet showed additional non-cold reps trying to push draws + draws/transitions speed. Didn't work well going too fast with too many misses... bottom sheet was not for this drill and purely trying to do transitions, not great but way better when watching sights carefully and gripping firmer...

Missed this time at 3.12 sec from AIWB concealed to a 2" dot.

I like the cold drills and will always show up and run something cold dedicated, whether it's this drill, FAST or something else. Can't waste that opportunity since you get one per training session max. Will want to work more on smaller targets in dry fire, esp for when I'm working draws.

I'm kind of surprised that I hit this one.

The factory night sights on this pistol require a "drive the dot" hold, and the POI is in the lower 1/2 to 1/3 of the dot out to about 50 yards. At 7 yards, the front sight is about 30% wider than the 1" square, so while I take a certain satisfaction in this particular hit, I believe it's what happens when skill and luck show up in equal measure.

Oh hell I shot HDs for a couple years before I realized they hit behind the dot at 7 yards because I don't shoot at small objects at 7 yards. Not until someone here said they got it straight from Trijicon. Wasn't I surprised? Since then they give me fits at close dot drills. My solution is don't shoot dot drills. Shoot B8s at 25 yards ;)

No. I get HD fronts sized for a proper ;) 6:00 hold on what I want to see and hit at 25. Then POI is still above the dot at 15, then 10. 7 remains the dot for all I know cause a 3x5 at 7 don't care.

What do you do if you need to drive the dot at 25 yards? :(

I can (kind of) superimpose the dot over a round black bull and get a pretty good group that sits in the lower half of the black IF the bull is wider than the front sight. If the front sight completely obscures the bull, then luck plays a much bigger role.

Shot this again Wed on a 3x7 index card at 7 yards, owb. Hit at 2.02 sec which is pretty slow. Want to keep working small targets at this range, especially strings of fire. Subsequent single shots were hits in around the 2 sec range, double shots had tons hit low, mostly I think on the 2nd shot. Time for some work on a horizontal stripe working recoil, sight tracking and anticipation.
