Looking to carry a less lethal option at home (dog walking, mainly) on the road (in the truck, or filling up at a filling ststion) or outdoors (RV, camping).

Never owned pepper spray before, but after looking at reviews, this Sabre Red "3 in 1" spray appears to be what I am looking for. I need it to be effective against two legged and four legged critters, be easy for either me or my wife to deploy, and not injure me in the process.

I'm guessing some here are knowledgeable about this stuff, so need you guys to tell me if this is any good, or just a waste of money, and I ought to be buying something else.

Thanks!

Anybody seen Chuck, DB or Wayne?

Hopefully he or another SME will be along shortly Rich as he weighed in (w/ Sabre red) when I added OC to my EDC.

I don't trust OC.

But if you have to get the same as your local LEO's use for duty work.

I've seen OC fail less then Tasers but no one wants to use it. It's the gift that keeps giving. I love the stuff but in my former life I was a chemical agent instructor. For us it's right above verbal commands/ limited hands in our force continuum.

I'd go with Sabre Red rather than the 3 in 1. The CS won't bother dogs and I've never seen a suspect identified with the UV marker.

I like flip top caps. The one you're looking at requires you to slide a tab over to access the button. Less intuitive for me.

I'm not LE but this is what I carry.

Rich it seems Coyotesfan97 gave you some solid advice IMO but I also emailed Chuck a link to this thread, can't hurt anything.

Here's an older thread with good spray discussion from Chuck and others.

It's decent OC but not my first choice of either formula or launcher.

I also prefer the Saber Red to the formulas with CS added. IMHO CS brings nothing to the table. I also prefer the flip top type sprayers. Or the Spitfire.

For the record, I really like OC as a use of force option, and I've found it to be very effective in hundreds of uses on the street.

Claude Werner recommends the Sabre Red Spitfire (http://www.amazon.com/SABRE-Red-Pepper-Spray-Fastest-Deploying/dp/B00Q6RUYH0). Been meaning to pick up a couple. Thanks for the reminder.

Thx for the update Rich, been looking for a smaller Sabre OC for my runs as the larger one that I EDC is a tad too big for the running short pockets, hmmm ........

If you trust OC, you didn't learn to use it in one of my training classes (nor, I suspect, in a class taught by Chuck, Wayne, or DB). OC is certainly not 100% effective. In a decent formulation and proper deployment, however, it does work very effectively on most people most of the time. In my organization's experience, it works more reliably than the Taser. We also use Sabre Red/

+1 for Sabre Red. It's pretty wicked to get sprayed in the eyes. The Crossfire cans seem good but for regular joe pocket carry they are a bit large. I carry the one shown above now.

Picked up a couple different sprays on Amazon. Got a large can for walking the dogs and spitfire to put on my keychain. Both are sabre. I did get the 3 in 1 for the large can. I didn't realize it until after reading this it wasn't needed.

Thx FFGuy, I had looked @ the top link after my last post, now to get it ordered.

My larger Sabre Red can finally slipped out of my pocket on a run this week & during my cool down walk in 95° temps. I actually found it. The clip *should* prevent a repeat occurrence, sim. to the one on my long carried Spyderco.

Yeah, I dunno.

Now that I've had the Mk-6 dispenser model for a few days, I'm thinking maybe it will just go in the truck side pocket.

It is "just" too big for carry in my strong side pocket. Which is weird; at Tac Con, at John Murphy's excellent range session, I tried the inert training unit and it pointed well, and seemed to be what I wanted.

Well.

The size of the cannister (about 1 1/2") prevents me from allowing my fingers to easily slip past to grab my keys out of my pocket. And, the built-in clip has a lot of spare room at the clip end; meaning it does not really retain well. In fact, it slipped and fell onto the floor when I handling the leash on our Mini-Schnauzer.

So I think I'll be investigating another spray method for pocket or clip carry. Maybe re-look at the Spitfire again.

One thing I like about the spitfire is I can carry it in my hand while I'm walking through the parking lot. It's natural because I normally pull out my keys anyways. I watched some videos on it and the spray only extends to just outside contact distance. Not near as much as your bigger cans.

I have a few of the Saber 0.75 oz cans and found that the pocket clip sucks. It snags and doesn't stay clipped very well. I ended up zip tying a stainless cell phone clip to the bare can, and that works much better.

I was not happy with the size of my Mk6 dispenser for EDC, so today I received this smaller key chain unit, $10 on Amazon Prime:

Sabre Red Pepper Spray with Key Ring - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UVTDLG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_EtFVxbGMK8RW4

Size comparison below; bottom is my EDC Streamlight, a snap cap, up one is the keychain unit, top is the Mk6 dispenser (this is my trainer unit; the 'live' dispenser is in the truck.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160824/ae655ec97f62f7c647ecb9f7c8545b5e.jpg

I think I'll be happier carrying the smaller item for dog walking etc.

Hope this helps someone choosing a spray. It's hard to tell relative sizes from pictures.

Just jumped on this thread, and unfortunately I'm in a bit of a hurry, so I haven't had the opportunity to open the imbedded links. I picked up some pepper spray for my daughters (20 and 19, in college, and while they are very good shots with a handgun, they are too young for a CCW).

I bought some Fox Labs for each of them, as Fox seems to have almost always received rave reviews - until this thread.

Is Fox still a good choice, or should I pick up something else? I experimented with Sabre Red stream, and I thought it had a prostate problem - stream was not impressive. The Fox had longer range, but I have no idea how effective it would have been.

I've been looking and looking for a better EDC LTL spray than the two I've ordered so far.

The twist locks looked problematic for pocket carry (risk of ND) and the Mk 6 canister was just too big.

I saw this flip top version on Greg Ellifritz' feed as a Prine Day Deal for $7, but I missed it by a few hours. Anyway, I felt the $12 regular price was worth trying, so I ordered one:

SABRE Flip Top Red Pepper Gel with Key Case and Finger Grip, 25 Bursts and 12-Feet (4M) Range (Black)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HB0XDRE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_tlPzzbASGQMAA

I'm attracted by virtue of the flip top.

My plan is this will be something I can carry all the time in my pocket, but with less risk of it going off in my pants.

That was one of my wife's stocking stuffers for Christmas last year, so she's been carrying it for over 6 months with no AD's. I discharged a live one before giving it to her and was happy with the amount of product, the range and the nature of the gel before committing to it being the one she carried.

Feverishly searching for my notes from Chuck Haggard's presentation at this spring's Rangemaster Tactical Conference....

If I recall correctly, Chuck much preferred the fog over the gel or stream. One was able to lay down a minefield-like cloud between the attacker and yourself, then beat feet. The gel was the preferred choice if one was engaged in a vigorous dogpile situation.

That makes a great deal of sense to me.

I do hope I have not mangled Chuck's advice. I'll keep looking for my notes.

And I think Chuck's advice is spot on and were I to carry pepper I would much prefer a fog.

My wife saw a discharge from a fog can and said "There's no way I'm carrying that around our 3 year old" so we went with the gel.

It's kind of like her 10/22 with the 30 round mags. It's not the perfect tool but it's one she's comfortable with.

Understood, I have a five-year-old granddaughter. She's not a sprinter yet, so I have stream units and practice a lot with the inert trainers.

Huh, I hadn't thought of this angle (gel vs. fog). With me, it's my wife, who is generally with me at the stop and rob, or at WalMart.

Maybe I'll carry the Mk6 canister walking the dog.

I respect the hell out of Chucks input, though.

To be honest it was more the flip top cover against NDs.

This is kind of the 9mm vs .45 debate, only for pepper spray. They both have their advantages and disadvantages and you essentially have to pick which set you want and live with it.

The stream has less cross contamination, but you have to more accurately apply the product to the felon/dogs face, the cone/mist is easier to hit with, but has a higher risk of cross contamination.

I can tell you when Officer Pepper Spray empties a 4oz cone mist can of Aerko Punch II, you can empty a whole floor of a Ramada Inn...

It appears that my favorite pepper spray, the Sabre Spitfire, is no longer in production. The main reason I liked it over all others is because of the design of the trigger that basically let you point and shoot it like a remote control.

Does anyone know if there is an alternative spray with a similar trigger design?

There isn't. My wife's stocking stuffer was purchased because her spitfire was approaching expiration, and I couldn't find a replacement.

Bumping this up for 2018 as I need to replace some aging spray and I couldn't find a more recent thread. Where is the best place to purchase the Sabre Red stuff (flip top/both cone and stream models and trainers) and is there anything new that should be considered?

I ended up ordering a half dozen of this setup (live + inert). I like the size and the clip, especially for my wife and kid who can attach them to their waistband when not wearing something with a suitable pocket which is the majority of the time.

Does anyone know if Sabre Red offers their cone spray in a similar setup? I've been unable to find it thus far if they do.
