My range bought a set of rental guns this week.

One of them is a brand new, unfired garden snake trim Sig P226 .40. I noticed the slide had this odd finish color in the ejection port area when safety checking the weapon, and I took these close ups .The rainbow effect is constant regardless of lighting or angle.

Is this merely a cosmetic QC fail on the factory's part, or do I need to make some safety-related phone calls to the range management ?

It's normal for Nitron.

It's normal for Nitron.

Fair enough.

Could the rainbow coloring be marks from heat treat bleeding through light (poor) nitron coating? Not entirely familiar with Sig's manufacturing processes.

Nitron is porous like parkerizing. Wipe it down with CLP or the like, leave a fairly heavy coat on it for awhile (say 15 minutes) and then wipe down. See what it looks like after.

I think it's got an early case of the congenital derpes from its rainbow-hued brethren (http://www.sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/p238-rainbow.aspx). Careful putting it with around others, it might be Cohentagious.

Pretty clearly that gun plays for the other team.

I imagine it's a small market, but if nobody was buying them, they'd quit making them. Even drag queens and "real housewives of wherever" have the right to self defense, no? :)
