View Full Version : Support side holster for when you FU your dominant hand?

Last night, I came very close to breaking my hand during a BJJ takedown. Fortunately it's only a minor sprain that's responding well to ice and Advil. One of first things I thought about when it happened was how I had not a single support side holster in my big box-o-holsters.

I'm going to order a couple left hand holsters asap. I figure they will karmically prevent any further injuries to my right hand.

My wife is a lefty, so I have plenty of holsters. :)

I have left hand holsters and have taken classes left handed because...

Seems like an opportunity to practice support side draws instead of buying a holster

Yeah, I do that pretty regularly, but if I had my right hand stuck in a cast for a month I would want a left handed rig.

Yeah, a month of that would probably get old quick.

Good to have one around. Rotator cuff surgery came up and I was glad I didn't have to wait for one.

I'll second the recommendation on these. I have several. They are great utility holsters to have around.

I am old, slow, brittle and stupid.

Therefore, I have right and left hand rigs for all my carry guns, along with mag carriers.

I even have an extra Eagle fanny pack, rigged lefty. That was a handy way to tote gear with a broken paw.

I didn't think ahead to this sort of thing and the first time I broke my hand (yes, the first time) I ended up going cavalry draw on the left side for a bit until I could get a lefty. The second time was winter and I just pocket carried my LCR in my left jacket pocket.

Ive been dealing with this this fall and winter. The cheapo glock factory holsters work on either side. Was very glad to have one around.

I just got enough range of motion in my right hand to return to strong side after breaking the fifth metacarpal in my right hand at ECQC in November. I switched from my VP9 to my PPS and used a belly band.

I've picked up a full selection of LH holsters for that very eventuality. They're a lot easier to get deals on if you're not in a hurry. Lot of folks here are into Jits and MMA; it's not if, but when your hand/arm/elbow/shoulder/ribs where you normally carry will be jacked up enough to need to switch something.

I try to keep one for myself but always wind up loaning them out.

I've since made sure I have a VG2 set for lefty use and since in use them as trigger guard covers anyway it doesn't matter.

A few months back when Raven had their G19 w/ APL grey holsters on sale for $39 I got a wrong handed one just in case.

I've always kept left handed holsters on hand for that very reason.

Funny work story;

I'm checking on one of my SGTs, he is in the hospital getting looked at after he knocked a bad guy out but broke his right hand (his strong hand) in the process. I tell him "If you need a left handed holster so you can carry your gun home just let me know, I have several in my office". He asks me why I would have left handed holsters. I look at him, then his hand, then back at him. "Oh..."

I know, right? Making M is a definite possibility this year, and the smart thing would be to stay away from the dojo. But... I really like to fight...

Have had left hand gear since 1990 when I had right arm in a cast and had no left hand gear. Did twist draw. Not a fan.
I practice 2 hand/RH, RH only, LH only out to 25 yards.
Got several months practice 2012 when I broke 2 right forearm bones 2 hours into a 4 day class. Shot the rest out of left hand gear. Shot left handed about 4000 rounds while the orthropod did SS plate and 11 screws in , plate out operations.
