Even in this modern era I still love seeing natural selection make an attempt.

I can't tell you how many people want to watch then I shoot a muzzleloader, and attempt to do so with a cigarette in hand/mouth.

So what exactly happened?

Dude left an open container of powder on the bench in front of him. Spark from the discharge landed in it and...FOOF!

From the still for the embedded video it looks like a box of Pyrodex pellets. The pellets are for easy loading and each is equivalent to 50gr of black powder. One end of the pellet has an compound that is easier for the primer to ignite. One spark in the box and FIRE. Pyrodex is a substitute black powder that burns like smokeless.

Didn't even look at the still. That's a container of Pyrodex pellets alright.

So if that was regular black, I assume the burn would have been more explosive?

If it were regular BP, it likely would have been loose powder in a 1# can. In my personal experience, the flame mostly goes straight up from the mouth of the container (assuming you have, say, a pound of powder in, hypothetically speaking, a Folger's can) although one of those small-mouthed Goex cans might not have enough opening to vent it real well and I'm not about to find out.

I believe Tam is correct about the can spout size making a difference. A BP shop I used to go to had examples of various mistakes, and they had a flask or two that vented through seams.
