Week 145: FAST

Results may be posted until February 1st, 2015.

Starting the new year with a PF classic - the F.A.S.T., a short test great for a baseline evaluation of stand-and-shoot skills.

Designed by: Todd Louis Green
Range: 7 yards
Target: 8" circle and 3x5 card (see http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/fast-target.pdf for a downloadable target; this target must be printed on an 8.5x14 "legal" sheet of paper)
Start position: concealed, hands relaxed at sides (see below for alternatives)
Rounds fired: 18

Pistol begins with exactly two rounds in the gun. Draw should be from underneath legitimate concealment (see below for alternatives). Arms must be relaxed with hands at your sides (not on the gun).

1. On the buzzer, draw and fire two rounds at the 3x5 card.
2. Reload from slidelock/empty gun.
3. Fire four rounds to the 8" circle.

Repeat for a total of three runs (18 rounds).

Do not fire extra rounds. Shots intended for the 3x5 that hit the 8", or vice versa, count as misses.

Scoring is as follows:

Total time + 2s penalty for each 3x5 shot missed, + 1s penalty for each 8" shot missed

The FAST is intended to be shot from legitimate concealment or with a duty/retention holster. Even when shot with a duty holster, start position is arms at sides (not "interview" stance). Score is modified as follows based on carry method:

Concealed: no penalty

Retention holster with closed (snap or velcro) mag pouches: 0.5 second bonus (subtraction) per 6-shot run

Retention holster with open top mag pouches: no penalty or bonus

ALS, SERPA, or Thumb Drive (or similar) holster without concealment: 0.5 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run

Open top holster without concealment: 3 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run

If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, begin with the gun on a table with no round in the chamber (two in the magazine). On the start signal, pick up the gun, rack the slide, and shoot the drill. Reload from underneath concealment.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Starting position (concealed, duty, open holster, or ready position)
Type of holster (if applicable)
Time and hits for string 1
Time and hits for string 2
Time and hits for string 3
Aggregate score

P30 V3 in JM AIWB
Shot from concealment

Run1. 5.88 - 1 head = 8.88
Run2. 5.97 clean
Run3. 5.40 clean

20.25 total including penalties.

None of these were my fastest, I was really trying to be 109% accurate but the very first shot went high lol. Decided to continue and a medium pace and strive for good hits. The last few sessions I've had a issue throwing a body shot so this time I really slowed them down, my normal body shots are ~.21 and today they were all ~.32.

Thanks you guys. I now have a lot better perspective that while better is better and worse is worse, it's a big aid to shoot a task in a comfortable and familiar environment. I bet these would turn into low/mid-4s in a match or anyplace else that entails more pressure. Narrowing that performance gap is a significant part of 'getting better' IMHO. For me, success at the FAST Challenge in AFHF was largely about getting down to semi-consistent sub-4 runs in comfortable practice, and then when it came to the test in class, I was able to lay back and shoot fairly comfortably at the mid/high-4 range.

And dammit, you can post results in this thread until February 1st, 2016. Not 2015.

I've been a lurker for some time but have always been too hesitant to post my own two cents. I decided this new year that I will be more active on the forum. What better start than with a DoTW post?

I try not to get carried away with the FAST, and use it sparingly in my range sessions as a quick evaluation of my cold abilities. I suppose that was its original intent anyhow. The following were my first shots fired for 2016 after little more than a month of no shooting whatsoever. Heck, I didn't even do any dry fire either. I really need to get off my butt and dry fire more often. I got to the range expecting to flounder, but I was actually pretty pleased with my performance. Normally I am confident to shoot the fast clean in around the 5.25sec mark. I focused on getting my hits, but on the third string I got a bit sloppy. Reloads have definitely become a weak area for me, and I need to incorporate them into my dry fire.

G19 in a Bladetech Phantom at 4:00 with a tucked shirt covered by an unzipped Condor jacket. I was also wearing jeans but no underwear.

1st: 5.24 Clean 1.73, 0.44, 2.45, 0.22, 0.20, 0.20

2nd: 5.06 Clean 1.77, 0.47, 2.22, 0.20, 0.20, 0.20

3rd: 7.82 (4.82 with -1H, -1B) 1.69, 0.42, 2.13, 0.20, 0.19, 0.19

Total: 18.12 seconds

After the DoTW, I then began my practice routine. Near the end, I decided to practice Draw/Shoot 2 to a 3x5 card several times. Feeling cocky, I really wanted to shoot my last 6 rounds of the day in a sub 5 second FAST clean, but that was to no avail with -1B.

5.23 (4.23 with -1B) 1.42, 0.33, 1.93, 0.18, 0.18, 0.19

HK P30 LEM 9mm, Fricke gear AIWB, winter coat, no gloves.

5.75, dropped one body shot (1.98, .52, 2.55, .26, .22, .22) = 6.75 total
6.45, dropped one body shot (2.0, .61, 2.94, .30, .33, .27) = 7.45 total
6.05, dropped one body shot (1.89, .74, 2.69, .26, .23, .24) = 7.05 total

First shot and reloads felt glacially, if not geologically, slow. Got all the head shots, which felt good. As I've written before, I'm glad this isn't too easy.

Messing around with my new GoPro. I have to say running video, especially for a DOTW FAST, adds a little bit of pressure, at least for me.:)

It was pissing rain, hence the bags over the target, which made it hard to see where I had hit. The first FAST I shot outdoors, the second and third, shot later in the session, were under the range shack.

Beretta 92D Centurion, 124g AE, JMCK, Blackhawk mag pouches under a knit shirt.

1st FAST: 6.24 (2.03, 2.73, 5.29, 5.61, 5.94, 6.24)

2nd FAST: 6.42 (2.08, 2.77, 5.50, 5.81, 6.12, 6.42)
3rd FAST: 6.06 + 2H = 8.06 (2.07, 2.61, 5.16, 5.45, 5.75, 6.06)

Concealed with a hoodie

String 1: 8.01 clean
String 2: 7.59 clean
String 3: 8.84 -2 head shots -1 body (13.84)

Total time: 29.44

I was just trying to go fast enough to get my hits which worked until the third run.
On the third string I broke my first shot way early and then panicked and dropped the next head shot and the first shot after the reload. At least I was able to put the next three where they were supposed to go.

I think I said on my FB page that I was still wondering about the GoPro I got last Father's Day - is it causing me to waste ammo doing fun to see stuff or incenting me to practice more things I ought to be anyway? Jury is still out. ;)

Vid adds some stress I think.

eyemahm and I run 3 FASTs every week. One cold at the beginning of practice, then two more at the end of practice, as a way to track abilities. This is my three from this past week.

I'm really far away from where all you guys are at. My biggest goal right now is to be able to do a sub 7 second FAST cold on demand, and I've been extremely far away from that for a very long time. For the first time ever, these past two weeks I've been popping out all my FASTs with 6.XX raw times. That itself is really a massive improvement for me, which I wouldn't have expected even a month ago, but it hasn't felt as great as it should because my crappy hits are still leaving me with 10+ second FASTs with some regularity. What I struggle with the most is dropping shots low, especially on the head. A lot of my clean bodies really have dropped shots in them, but the target is just big enough for me to squeak by as clean.

G17 Gen4, JRC AIWB-CDA-II, JM AIWB-SPMP, under T-shirt

FAST 1: 8.46
6.46 raw, -1H
2.17 draw
0.67
2.92 reload
0.25
0.23
0.22

Tried to draw as quick as I could, but I took the shot too soon. I'm betting that was the low one. If I had waited, this probably would have been my first cold sub 7.

FAST 2: 6.91
6.91 raw, clean
2.22 draw
0.82
3.13 reload
0.29
0.23
0.22

Fumbled reload.

FAST 3: 10.01
7.01 raw, -1H -1B
2.30 draw
0.74
3.30 reload
0.25
0.21
0.21

Fumbled reload again. Rushed shot after reload, no sights (high right).

Speaking for myself only, posting video here tends to ad more pressure to any tests or DotW's that I want to share. Wanting to do well compared to the membership here, or at least those that post in the training journals and DotW's, motivates me. My ammo budget is limited so I don't really have the luxury of pissing around, which often results in me getting only one or two cracks at the DotW's. So the result is you see me post the good and the bad, which you can see in my training journal and DotW's.;)

The P30 and Glock runs were all shot with either WPA or Federal Aluminum garbage ammo. The last 2 with the P2000 were just for fun.

P30 string one I had a light strike on the body shot I pulled. A few more followed later in the session. Likely because the thing hasn't been cleaned since day 2 of Combative Pistol in September. Still a bit better/more consistent shooting the G19 at speed than the LEM, but getting better.

HK P30 TLG LEM, Trij HDs, JMAIWB, my own pouch, from under a zip up jacket.

I said in my post above that I would post the good and the bad. This range session was mostly bad.

I haven't shot in two weeks. My 1st test was shot cold and my last two were done back to back, near the end of the range session.

Beretta 92D Centurion, 124g AE, JMCK, Blackhawk mag pouches under a knit shirt.

1st FAST : 6.35 +2H = 8.35 (2.27, 2.85, 5.56, 5.83, 6.10, 6.35)
http://i.imgur.com/6bS1C1hl.jpg

2nd FAST: 6.55 clean (1.85, 2.60, 5.17, 5.57, 6.12, 6.55)
3rd FAST: 6.29 + 2H +1B = 9.29 (2.05, 2.86, 5.30, 5.65, 5.98, 6.29)
http://i.imgur.com/Q156sNzl.jpg

My only excuse for the accuracy issues, and I think it's a good one, is that it was raining again today which forced me under the pistol shack. I shoot the dot on my front sight and the pistol shack is so dark that I lose the dot, only seeing the outline of my sights. I was kinda guessing at my POA/POI. My very first shot went high, missing the 3x5 completely. On my last test I was so flummoxed about the sights I torpedoed myself. Not good. I need to see if I can find a Canadian smith to replace the tritium in my front sight or see if I can get an FO installed.

First time ever trying this drill, have done several drills on index cards or B8s, but never together. Ran this 3 times from OWB, so not true fast. Please note I guess I need to add 2 or 3 seconds for that penalty, but reporting my runs as is without adjustments for those or misses.

Run 1: First drill of the day! Good news is this was a clean run. Lost the times though. First shot was 2.21 sec, followed up by 1.23 sec.

Run 2: 7.92 + 1H (2.48, 0.93, 2.81, 0.54, 0.56, 0.59). This was first time recently I was able to time myself, so I didn't shoot to the plate as fast as I should have. Sped it up the next run, a bit too much

Run 3: 6.72 + 1B + 1H (2.36, 0.67, 2.47, 0.54, 0.38, 0.30) - sped up mid string on purpose, but need to learn to shoot based on sights more.

Based on dry fire I think I can a faster reload now closer to 2.0-2.2 sec, but definitely need work on the draw and shooting multiple on the index cards. Plenty of time to cut out.
