I'll bet $100 that's because the deputy in question was not carrying his own gun off-duty.

The odds of needing someone else's gun go up rather significantly if you don't have your own in the first place.

I wouldn't bet against you on that.

On the other hand, one analysis of news coverage found nearly 200 cases over seven years where criminals' guns were taken away by intended victims: http://www.nrapublications.org/index.php/9493/who-is-the-armed-citizen/ (go to page 3 for that), the opposite of what anti-gun groups usually suggest will happen.

Several years back, a large local PD mandated off duty carry. That generated a huge run on concealment holsters for SIG P220s (duty gun). That tells us that many were not carrying off duty and a large per cent didn't have any thing other than the issue handgun.

Silliness.
