Please read the rules (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1837-Drill-of-the-Week) before participating in this thread.

Week 1 -- Slow Fire Marksmanship
results may be posted until 11:59pm EDT on Monday 10-October-2011.

Range: 25yd
Target: NRA B8 replacement center (download pdf here (http://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=57&d=1306683559), courtesy Tom Jones)
Start position: Any
Rounds fired: 10

Fire ten rounds at the 8.5x11 B8 replacement center target (click link above to download the pdf file to print this target). There is no time limit.

Add up the score for all ten shots. Keep in mind that the "7" ring is visible but not identified, and the four corners of the target are technically the "6" ring. For hits on the line between two scoring zones, use the higher scoring value only if the grease ring of the bullet hole cuts the line between the two zones. Tears and other marks that are greater than the bullet's diameter do not count for scoring. Shots that do not hit the sheet of paper score zero.

Do you have an adaption for those of us with only 50 foot indoor ranges?

Smaller target?

ToddG
10-03-2011, 05:53 PM
For official purposes, I'd say that's not equivalent. It has more scoring zones (rounds that would miss at 25yd on the 8.5x11 will score as 6-zone hits on the 50ft target) and there is a real difference between shooting at 50ft and 25yd in general.

We knew going into this that not everyone could do every drill every week. We picked this one to start hoping it would be as accessible as possible. Sorry.

They're close, but the line is only broken by radial tears. The grease rings aren't touching.

I feel like I could have done better, so I'll try again tomorrow at nra, where I can see the targets well. These were shot at sharpshooters, which is essentially low light practice it seems.

First ten rounds fired today was done to verify zero since I had just adjusted the sights. This was the target at 7 yards 10 rounds fired.

M&P 45 - DCAEK, Stock Sights, Rear Dots blacked out, front blade entirely painted orange - 230 LRN

Yes, I shot this as one of the first things I did with my new G17. As a consequence of the unfamiliar trigger, I broke one shot way to early, completely missing the target. I'm going to try it again tomorrow with some real sights on the gun.

We had a long surgery cancelled today, so I zoomed down to the range to shoot this drill. Keep in mind I have been doing a fair amount of 25-50 yd bullseye practice since I took the Pat McNamara course this past summer: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1254-Pat-McNamara-TAPS-Pistol-6-30-amp-7-1-in-Castro-Valley-CA

I grabbed a G19rtf2 I shot the second day of the Defoor course (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1729-AAR-Kyle-Defoor-2-Day-Advanced-Handgun-Sept.-14-15-2011-Castro-Valley-CA) and shot the 10 shot 25 yard drill cold--scoring a 96 (5x). Then I put a hundred rounds through the G19rtf2 doing various close range speed drills at 7-10 yds.

http://www.10-8forums.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=7658&filename=G19%20RTF%20RMR.jpg

Next I used the G17 I shot the first day at the Defoor course, getting a 97 (1x).

180

The G17 seemed to shoot a bit high, so I adjusted the dot down a bit and repeated the drill, scoring another 97, but with 5x. I shot the G17 for 50 more rounds doing barricades, along with working an 870 out to 50 yards using slugs and practicing transitions to the pistol.

http://www.10-8forums.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=download&Number=7655&filename=Glocks%20GFA.jpg

Right before I left, I decided to run the drill one more time, using my G19 CCW pistol and shot the Fed 147 gr HST duty rounds loaded in the gun for my final run through the 10 shot drill at 25 yards, getting a 96 (3x). I dropped another magazine of duty ammo into the G19 and went back to the hospital--an unexpectedly fun diversion in the middle of the day!

RDS equipped pistols really shine when doing longer range shooting!

I was able to get out and shoot the drill today. I don't do much 25 yd drills so I was shocked by my 82-1x the first time. My second attempt (after a horrible job on the 4-5-6-7 drill) tallied at 73. I had a wonderful group in the 8-ring which afterward I realized was due to me over driving the dot and aiming too high. Lesson learned.

My first round was with my HK45, which was handy at the time when I went to the range. I had to warm it up for about 50 rounds and I still sucked, b/c I don't practice the HK45 at 25 yds often. The second one is with my HK P30L and you can see this is the one I sleep with :)

I've never scored before, but this looks like 84 pts to me with a 2-X. (3)7, (3)8, (2)9 and 2-X 10s. I think there are 2 in a keyhole in the 7th ring and obviously a keyhole in the 8th. If not, back out 7 points, b/c I had a fresh cardboard backing that's 3ftX4ft and I didn't see any marks anywhere else-I don't think I could miss THAT bad :o
http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx38/djdemarco/HK45Points.jpg

Here's the P30L in 9mm and you can tell she's my favorite. Looks like a 93 or 95 pts to me and a 2-X (?) as long as it breaks the line, correct?

The ring gives you the point value...10 ring and X ring count for 10 points. 9 counts for 9 points, 8 gives 8, etc. If the grease ring from the bullet breaks the line of a scoring ring, it counts in the higher ring.

It's a 63, but if you imagine the '6' ring extending past the paper it's a 75. I clearly changed my sight picture after the first two shots (I saw the hole open up in the black on my first.) I'm still struggling with the tendency to pull my shots to the left. I shot this after warming up with a 'dot torture' drill.

I've been reading Pistol-Training.com for a few weeks and recently discovered the forum. Once here, I found the Weekly Drill and thought it would be fun to participate. With my range having a variety of limitations (no drawing from the holster, no shooting on the move, etc) this drill wound up working out for me (waiting on a membership to arrive for a club with fewer restrictions).

I was tight on time this weekend so I hit the range with only this drill in mind. I had time to shoot it twice before I had to get going. I brought along my cameras to record it so that I could re-watch the video and learn from it later. Both times I shot the drill I would up with 9 out of 10 shots on paper. I should have looked around for a clean piece of cardboard so that I could have seen where those missed shot went.

Just want to say that I really like this "drill of the week" idea. Among other things, it gives me a chance to compare where I am in my progress compared to all of the other people I read giving and asking advice. Most of the time all you see is "video of my best/fastest drill ever" not just "so I did this drill this practice, and here was the result."

Whoa, hold on--folks, this is a SLOW fire marksmanship drill.

WaltW's video is a good example of how NOT to do slow fire.

Take your time getting ready. Raise the pistol up to the target while focusing on getting good sight alignment (keep in mind you have to accept a degree of wobble around the center of your target zone) and then proper trigger control. After the shot breaks, be sure to have good follow through and get a second sight picture. Then drop you pistol down or put it back in the holster. Take a momentary break. Re-focus. DON'T stand there holding the pistol out getting your muscles and eyes fatigued on slow fire; save that for timed and rapid fire strings.

Likewise, during slow fire, if you have not broken your shot in 5-10 sec or so from the time you bring the pistol up on target--STOP! Lower the pistol, take a momentary break, re-focus before re-initiating that shot.

Again this is SLOW fire marksmanship, not timed or rapid fire.

A great drill to work on all this is the 500 pt aggregate as discussed here: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1254-Pat-McNamara-TAPS-Pistol-6-30-amp-7-1-in-Castro-Valley-CA.

"50 round 500 point aggregate on 25 yd NRA B8 bull shot at 25 yards: 10 shots 2 hand slow fire, 2 sets of 5 shots timed fire in 20 sec, 2 sets of 5 shots rapid fire in 10 sec, 10 shots strong hand slow fire, 10 shots weak hand slow fire. Minimum recommended score of 400, preferably over 450."

Since taking the TAPS class this summer, I have been trying to shoot the 500 pt aggregate once or twice each practice session whenever possible.

If you are having problems making hits at 25 yds, move the target closer to 20 yds or even 15 yds until you start getting good hits. Then start moving it back out.

Some of the folks who shoot here are pretty hard guys. Shooting with them you forget grease rings--there has to be an actual hole in the line for it to count. Likewise, shots outside of the 7 ring or C-zone count as a "0". These guys would likely score SIGcurios's target as an 85 (4x)...

I shot target 1 cold. I shot target 2 right before I packed up at the range today. I'm a bit disappointed in myself as I've been getting more range time in these last few months than I ever had before. It obviously shows that I need to be contributing more time to distance work.
