I acquired this older 870 Magnum today. I've never had an 870 before. What should I check/replace? It seems to function soundly. I'd like to replace the stock with a shorter version (youth?) and add an 18" barrel and extended mag tube. Anybody know the best source for used/new 870 parts or have an 18" barrel they would like to part with? I'm not a fan of the Magpul furniture. Also, what is the difference between the Police & Magnum?

The "Magnum" designation pre-dates the "Police" markings on the receiver but they're the same gun. Most issues with the 870 can be traced to the shell latches, a weak magazine spring, or a worn out extractor.

There are a lot of aftermarket synthetic stocks out there if you want something with traditional lines and none of them are very costly. Ebay is generally replete with "take-off" sets from sellers that have "upgraded" to something else.

Ditto for additional barrel options - they're plentiful and often cheap.

I've bought several 870 items from him with great service. Lots of 870 Police parts and take offs. As far as stocks I've ran Speedfeeds, Hogue short stocks, and Magpul. I personally prefer the Magpul as it feels the best but does look weird.

Care to share where you find all these cool guns (5924, 870 Mag)?

I don't think your going to accomplish much by knocking off 1.5" of barrel.

The firing pin return spring probably needs to be replaced anyways, a lot of the magnums have the old style spring with evenly spaced coils that are prone to breaking in the middle.

It won't fit into my truck vault drawer now...so the shorter barrel and stock will fix that. Plus, I just want it as short as possible.

This gunbroker guy is JD from AI&P Tactical (http://www.aiptactical.com/). I have emailed him about various things related to 870s and he seems like a very knowledgeable and all round good guy and former Marine.

For extended mag tubes I went with the Wilson Combat (Scattergun Tech) kit. It was a great improvement over the factory Remington extension.

Excellent point...well if you want to do some horse trading on that 20" barrel for some parts let me know. I don't have a shorter barrel, but I do have a couple used Speedfeed stocks and forends.

18" police barrels are on sale at Midway a couple times a year for less than a $100.

PM sent.
Thanks to SLG and others....I'll get this old 870 running.

I took the bait on the used Vang Comp barrel and +2 extension....always wanted to try out one of their barrels and I don't mind if it looks beat.
