It is a grey day here in Dallas. Seems like a good time to post a brace of Mountain Revolvers. These were precursors to the Mountain Gun. My original has been carried and shot a ton and is one of my favorites. Sacrificed a P7 to trade into a second. Now....a holster rig that is both classy yet modern.

I had one when they first came out. A local grocery store had a small guns, reloading and sporting goods section. Once I'd done the paperwork with the store manager, we walked over to the grocery cashier, he put the gun on the conveyor, she rang it up, and I walked out with it. I still come across that receipt from the grocery store now and then that says "gun" $330 or whatever it was. Makes me smile.

Love that Mountain Gun barrel profile. So classy.

What difference is there between the Mountain Revolvers and the Mountain Guns?

Very nice. If only they made a blued .44 Special version.

"Vapor Finish", all flash chromed trigger and hammer, and pre MIM, supposedly done at the custom shop, one of mine has the cylinder release with no bottom teardrop, no special markings. All black sights. They were super utilitarian guns with a slim barrel profile.

A blued .44 version would essentially be a model 24. Very similar except the Mountain Revolver is a round butt....which many don't like.

WOW! Grips appear to be VZ's?

Yep. I like the VZ's to carry. I do not like shooting full house .44 mags with them. They have zero recoil absorption. I mostly use .44 specials these days. If I need a big bore mega load outdoor revolver, I use my Ruger Alaskan. I do fine with .454's out of it and it seems to less felt recoil than my Magna ported Freedom Arms Casull.

I had one of the Mountain Guns. Would have been `98 or so? Sorta like the 696, if I had known how much people would pay for them 20 years later I would have bought several.

I had one box of green and yellow Remington Express 240 grain JFP. I didn't make it through the box. I tried twice. There was enough recoil to tear the skin on my trigger finger where it wrapped around the side of the trigger (first knuckle). The second trip I got the genius plan to try the band-aid first (and it did stop the bleeding). It would have been an absolutely phenomenal .44 SPECIAL. As a magnum...I have no idea what compels some people. Masochism I guess.

Someday I want another 25-5. That was a great idea gun. Factory .45 colt wasn't nearly as rambunctious. Unfortunately mine was a Bangor era gun and was...rough. That's on the list of things to do. Find one that's in reasonably good shape and pay one of the good revolver smiths to do it up right.

I love the 25-5's... here is my only specimen at this time and she is actually back at S&W for a master action job. I will load 8.5 grains of unique under a Lyman 454424 265 grain Keith bullet and enjoy the simple pleasure of a large lead bullet smacking steel or paper or whatever.

Yes sir.. since 1873, 45 colt been smackin folks. I would love to find a 4" Model 25 ... but that seems to be a tad difficult these days.

Nice. A Mountain Gun in .45 Colt is one of the few I regret getting rid of.

And that exact gun is the lead item in my "Book of Tears" of guns I've sold or traded that I've regretted. I have a pre-lock 625 MG in .45 ACP that is great (and that's killed a couple of truck loads of whitetails), but I really miss the .45 Colt version.

I have a mountain gun 629 I bought when I was in the army back in 91 or 92. I remember I took a payday advance from one of those blood sucker loan companies that are always right outside of post that prey on the young and dumb. I jumped on it because it was a run of 5000 guns and I loved reading Ross Seyfried and Elmer Keith articles. I regret not getting a 686 mountain gun and trading off a 45 colt mountain gun but I kept the .45 acp 625 mountain gun. I wish VZ made round butt to square butt grips.

That's what I'd love--a round butt N frame in 44 special. It would fit my hands much better than the square butt guns.

Vz's square butt grips work very well on the rd but guns. Just dont look perfect.

Hogue makes conversion grips. I use the rubber one because it has no finger grooves.

Up until last week, those were the grips I used (with the finger grooves) for the entire time I owned the gun since the 80's and is why I was able to shoot a lot of full house .44 Mag in it.
