A five minute segment from the very first pilot episode of COPS. The mullets. The hair plugs. The nunchucks. The statements on camera that would get sooooo fired today, like "I'm the only white boy that belongs in this neighborhood, me and the other officers".

Take a look. Feel the nostalgia...and the nunchucks.

Is that an actress or were they using a special camera that takes off 230 pounds?

I was more intrigued by the 89s mullet hairstyle....

A majority of my traffic stops at that time started out with "why did you stop me", "because I am the only white guy who is supposed to be in this neighborhood". What is so funny is contrary to all the media b.s, the only people I have ever stopped based purely on race and profiling for drug purchasing is white people. I usually had a vehicle code violation to go with it, but it was how I kept dope from getting sold in my beat. Hard to work the sellers in a black and white, but parking it in "their" drive up drug mart did ruin business for them. I was never on the Crips Christmas list.

Still works that way where I live. White people driving in black areas of town after dark are either (1) hopelessly lost or (2) cruising for drugs. The second category provides a lot of money that fuel the drug gang wars in which black lives don't matter to other blacks.

Was that a Ford Pinto at 2:07? Now that's some real nostalgia.

Sheriff academy had a ride along portion after the first few weeks. 8 hours in the class, flowed by an 8 hour ride along one night of the week. My first ride along, first stop, was a guy in a brand new corvette in a shit area (people dumped furniture and tires on the sides of the road). FTO said look, "white boy in a no white boy zone".

Not his car. He was a mechanic. The car was dropped off for service and this guy took it out to "test drive it"... After about five minutes he admitted he was there to buy dope, but his usual guy was not out, so he was cruising side streets for a new guy... No dope on him, but lots of cash.

I have heard the term before... But saying it on TV like the guy did back in the day would get you fired for sure today.

Hey, never underestimate the power of the Pinto.

LSP552 used one to take out half of a wannabe outlaw motorcycle gang, WAY back in the day… in fact, I think that was even before he became the po-lice.

I want to get y'all's stories together and make a tv series out of them.

"Louisiana Cops", or "Coonass True Detective."

Those early COPs episodes were great to really show the public what kind of crap we dealt with daily and a glimpse into what criminals did and acted like. Later, I think everyone is numb to it and it has become more like a reality show.

Don't make fun of my old Pinto, it was all a poor broke officer could afford. I was careful to not select the exploding gas tank option.

The motorcycle gang thing happened when I worked for Lake Charles PD, just prior to starting the LSP academy.

So I watched the entire episode and it's fantastic...the old school stuff I remember about COPS when the world was a less PC place...but something struck me as off about a few of the personalities in the show. Especially the Captain they featured, Ron Cacciatore. So I googled.

Ol Ron ran into some trouble:

The episode was in Broward county FL. I think the feds have had an active investigation on somebody in Broward government since the 80's. So it's not a surprise.

Still, I'm pretty stoked that my "somethin' ain't right with that dude" meter works even on a youtube video from twenty + years ago.

Wow I didn't realize that Lake Charles was so interesting. It always seemed kind of boring in the sections I stayed at.

North LC was fun to work.

Off-duty with friend-girl in Pinto, and have right a way on highway. Black MC gang on crotch rockets merge into my lane without yielding, speeding up, running on shoulder, with 1 member cutting into my lane where I have to hit brakes. There was another on my ass who locked up and lost control when I hit my brakes. I watched him fall and tumble in slow motion in my rear view mirror, then several joined the pile like dominoes. It was a bit tense when I stopped, but I never had to pull the 1911.

Several members seriously injured, and I got sued because they claimed I deliberately ran them over. Jury deliberated for 30 minutes and called bullshit. The Pinto was never even scratched or touched. Drive like idiots in formation on crotch rockets and pay the consequences.

So, let's play a game : current LEOs, based on what you saw how many times would the officer in the pilot video have been suspended/ fired under current PC centric rules?

I knew something wasn't right too.....I would not have been ignoring his wife. She was 80's hot. He seemed like every Captain I despised.

Maybe he was into Crockett or Tubbs? Don't judge. Homophobia is so 1980's.

When my kids were little (5-6-7) I'd have them sit with me and watch COPS.
We'd talk it through....
"What do you think about that guy selling drugs?"
"These are the kinds of people selling drugs. Do you ever want to mess with drugs?"
"How do you think this car chase is going to end?"

Wife was never too pleased. But AFAIK, my kids still give stupidity a wide berth.

As far as Burger Joints go I'm a heathen from the North East and have no experience with either place to gauge. My daughters at Fort Sam Houston right now for training I'll see if she can give them a try on her days off and chime in. It will be interesting since she worked at 5 Guys while in college.

As far as the ladies go. If I had only those two to choose from it's a tie. If we are going for all time hot then Annette Haven followed closely by a tie between Seka and Colleen Brennan.

I just watched the video from the first post. Jerry Wurms was a great street cop for that era. The interactions and how you interacted with folks in patrol in heavy dope areas was right on the money. I have used just about every line in there myself back then. It was pre-Rodney King and at a time when the pendulum was on the back swing form the late 60's and 70's. You were actually working hard for the older minorities trapped in communities getting overrun with crack and the crime that came with it. The black grandmother's were my greatest allies and brought some of the best memories of how wonderful they were in such a bad time. They were seeing first hand a drastic change in their children and grandchildren that was radically different from how they were raised and their morals and values. In the 50's and 60's their families and communities were strong and bonded together often through church and faith and really fighting some serious racial issues. They had a hard time seeing their kids and grandkids destroying their neighborhoods and families and a massive lacking of pride and self-respect.
