View Full Version : Seeking Sources For Custom BHP Work

I have a BHP manufactured circa 1980. It has combat sights like a GI 1911, (i.e. all but nonexistent), a single sided thumb safety, and the mag disconnect installed. This was a gun that my F-I-L traded to me. I would like to give it a facelift and bring it to par.
Are there any well known BHP custom shops out there like Wilson Combat for Berettas and Cajun Gunworks for CZ?
I am keeping my fingers crossed that Wilson Combat will expand their custom work to the BHP like they did with Beretta, but who knows when of if that will happen.
I would like to, if possible:
have the GI style combat sights milled out for a dovetail to upgrade the sight options
remove mag disconnect and have some trigger work done
new or redone barrel
better thumb safety
anything else that members here may suggest
I want it updated but I also want it to run like a sewing machine. Honestly, I just want something different than my buddies who have custom CZ's and 1911's.

If you have the cash and don't mind a wait, Heirloom Precision also does excellent work with BHPS.

For the longest time Cylinder and Slide was THE 'smith for the BHP. Sounds like others are in the game now, but, C&S would be the first place I shopped.

I've got two custom BHP's, one each by Ron Phillips and Don Williams (The Action Works).

I don't care for nickeled guns as a rule, but I'd make an exception for that BHP.

Novak's is famous for their work on Hi-Powers. They've worked on two of my pistols and I highly recommend them. They also built the BHP's for HRT back in the day FWIW.

Karl Sokol out in Vermont would be my choice. I doubt that at the Sokol/Novak/C&S/Heirloom level there will be much if any difference in quality, but the history with Sokol is pretty unique.

Both of mine where done by Kurt Wickman when he was at Novak's -- Kurt does incredible work on BHP's, however he's been kicked out of the APSG, several divorces and I think was financially ruined by the 4th and could not keep work going.

Kurt had done 2 of mine as well-one when he was with Novak's, and one when he was on his own. He was a superb craftsman, but I understand that he's no longer in the business.
Best, Jon
I've had two done, a C&S and a MARS. The C&S had a pitted thumb safety which had to go back, but they addressed it and it was a good gun. The MARS has been excellent and I love the way I had it done -- it is a really cool pistol.

Any pics of the MARS BHP?

Oddly no. I will make some next time I go by storage.

I've had Heinie, Yost, and Sokol. Heinie doesn't build anymore, and Yost is cost prohibitive. Sokol would be my first choice as his work is solid, and prices are fair. Novak would be second. MARS is a black hole that spits out great pistols every thousand millenia.

I've not personally handled any of his work, but there used to be a guy in Fayetteville (NC) named Arnold "Arnie" Dew that did some very nice work on HP's at very reasonable prices.
