I know we have the long guns pic thread, but I (and hopefully some of you) feel that the shotgun is a weapon most elegant and worthy of its own thread. Now we can fulfill our scattergun lust without being interrupted with unsightly assault rifles, etc.

Made some changes to my 870 by adding a Magpul stock and Surefure DSF870. I was planning on just running a Fury on a Magpul forend but I got a smoking deal on a used light. The Magpul stock makes a huge difference for me as the Hogue shorty I had was too short where the Magpul is just right in its shortest configuration.

Rescued this from the LGS rack recently... QD swivels, Scattergun Tech safety and sights, Adventurer's Outpost sidesaddle and truck-bed liner on the stock all included. Straight outta Gunsite.

I need to shorten the butt a little more and get a light on it, and at some point a real sling, but for $300 I'm pretty pleased...

Nice, I'm digging the Lupara.

Is that a rear mounted fast fire RDS on the gray semi auto?

Odin Bravo One
04-11-2016, 10:20 PM
Yes it is a Burris FF. It is also a poor combination when considering the uses and needs of the pictures shotty's.

Rem & Benelli 20s are the wife and teenagers. Coach and SBS are HD, but mostly used for shits and grins. The camo is a Super X2 that got a ding in the barrel and was gifted to me with the deal being k could have if I could fix. The Gray is a Super X3 and both are absolutely great shotguns. But with the X2 and the chop job to the barrel, the sight is pretty ghetto, and would really benefit from the RDS. The X3 has great sights and zero need for the RDS. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a mount for the X2, even though Brownells said this would fit the X2, it only fits the X3.

The Coach/Lupara cost me 500 rounds of corrosive 7.62x39. Sits at 18.1", though I may SBS it along with two NEFs I have stashed in a closet. Then suppressors.

Much want.

They're not a bad shotgun for the money, I thought the 12ga might be a little stiff to cycle because of the bolt/cartridge mass ect.
But mine and the few I've seen cycle quite nicely.

I think the Adlers are available in Canada.

So I freely admit that I have more modern shotguns that collect dust in a gun cabinet, that may be a better choice for HD. But the fact of the matter is that no shotgun has ever felt better to me in my hands than the old hump back Browning A5.

This old Belgian example was a gift from my bride, many years ago. I took it to the last SOF world shoot in 2000 (If I recall correctly).

These days it serves as a home defense tool.

It has been a long time since anything was done to this gun.

The funny thing is that a person who is member here now found this gun for my bride in the mid 90s.

The barrel is 22"s long. Cylinder bore. The extension is from (I think) a Benelli.

The friction rings are set up for moderate to heavy loads. It runs 2&3/4 buck and slug very well.

870 Wingmaster on the left purchased from Summit Gunbroker for $220. As soon as I got it out of the box I was hopelessly in love.
870 Wingmaster on the right picked up at a local gunstore where I found it languishing on the shelf. Receiver was made before 1968. Barrel made in the early 80's. $175 OTD.

Added Wilson +1 mag tube extensions to each. Put some industrial strength velcro on the stocks (will come off nicely with application of some heat) and used that to attach some shell carriers.

Total spend under $450.

Jakus
07-22-2016, 12:38 PM
Do you prefer the stock location for spare shells to a sidesaddle or was it simpler for these builds?

TCinVA
07-22-2016, 12:52 PM
Many moons ago I hunted with a Winchester model 37A in 16 gauge. (Single shot) I always carried it in the woods with an elastic butt cuff that had spare shells on it for quick reloads.

Perhaps as a result of that, and having had bad experiences with a number of side-saddles that didn't hold rounds properly, I tend to prefer the stock for holding ammo. I've done the same shell carrying modification you see on the 870s to my Beretta 1301. There are better side-saddle carriers these days (like the Aridus units) but I've grown to rather like the way carrying on the stock keeps the balance of the shotguns.

If money was no object, I'd buy a nice leather carrier for the stocks on the 870s.

Jakus
07-22-2016, 01:24 PM
I recently took a cheap sidesaddle off my 590, and really like the natural balance again. I've been eye balling the Hill People Gear stock cuff since they recently started offering it in 12 gauge.https://hillpeoplegear.com/Products/tabid/762/CategoryID/8/ProductID/43/Default.aspx

I hooe to get a shotgun class in this year, and I think I'll need to add some kind of spare round carrier. Still torn between this and the Esstac velcro card setup...

TCinVA
07-22-2016, 02:03 PM
I wasn't even aware of the Esstac stuff. I would have rather purchased that than the Condor carriers I've got.

Either way, it's a very inexpensive yet effective way of getting the job done. I got the idea from Sherman House's blog:

https://revolverscience.com/2016/03/21/ch-ch-ch-changes-to-the-12-gaugeturn-and-face-the-strange/

Do you prefer the stock location for spare shells to a sidesaddle or was it simpler for these builds?

I fitted some nice expensive machined ally shotshell holders to the bodies of a couple of 590A1's. The shell holders used to firmly land in the centre of the back on my spine when transitioning. They were removed PDQ - keep a pouch or belt for shells with the gun and/or an el cheapo plastic carrier velcroed on the stock.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/7f0e400daebac219c3dcf44481458a36.jpg. This is my 870 Wingmaster Weirdo, of course in, "Chocolate Easter Bunny," finish. XS big dot ghost rings, which are ok. Bit of offset that has to be compensated for when shooting slugs inside 15 yards. Wood stock professionally pruned down to 12" LOP.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/a732671f72b170f8df5a15da3946d9db.jpg. Another Wingmaster that I added a new barrel to with XS, "DEA," type sights I found on EBay. Tom Givens has this same setup on some of his guns, and I liked it, so it was a logical upgrade. I know people HATE XS Big Dots on pistols, but on shotguns, I think they're great, and with the long gun's points of contact, the sight picture is very intuitive and easy to use in a hurry. Which I imagine is useful if you are being attacked by a large safari type animal. Makes sense.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/0922ee4f06816756c3987cbb1b2c2974.jpg. Don't laugh me off the forum, you PF'ers, but this is the shotgun I use in training classes the most. H&R Pardner Pump. Chinese (Norinco) 870 rip-off with a Browning Auto-5esque hump at the back of the receiver. I changed out to a Hogue short stock and the Magpul forend, and replaced the bead (drilled and tapped) for a slightly bigger brass bead (the OEM is pressed in...and in a shotgun class with the Late, Great, Uncle Paul Gomez, the bead left the party early, and I finished the class without it.). Despite this shotguns strange pedigree, it feels more rugged and the internals seem well fit and clean compared to the Remington competitor that this shotgun competes against. I'd take this shotgun anywhere, for any job, and simply worry about other things. Patterns even bulk EXPRESS buckshot from Walmart admirably, but parks Federal FC 00 like a pro. I'd sell my Express Tactical before I'd sell this one.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170705/dea488bcb8c5ca6e9b868d98e25feb92.png. And me, dead center with the jeans and brown boots on. I could probably use a LOP longer than 12", but I really like how the short stocks handle. And as long as you put your thumb in the right place, it is very hard to clobber yourself inadvertently.

Here is my 870P that I bought used quite a few years ago and have recently taken a new interest in. I added the Magpul stock and forend, put a new magazine spring in it, and bought one of the ever so slightly enlarged Wilson safeties. I'll probably add a Tritium bead next and perhaps a little bit of rail to attach a Surefire X300u.

Absolutely.

I've always been a carbine and handgun guy, never taken a shotgun class. Over the last few years I've kinda been leaning more and more towards the gauge being the best option for my particular situation, regarding personal/home defense. Before I committed to the shotgun entirely, I knew that I wanted some type of formal training with it. I think Tom's class was just about a perfect introduction to the use of a defensive shotgun.

Having to pick between the two, I'm more partial to Mr. War Eagle than Mr. Roll Tide (the distinction being that I'm not okay banging my brother or sister...they at LEAST have to be a cousin). However, you're much more likely to find me watching other people playing video games or other people doing woodworking, rather than other people playing sportsball.

Didn't take a lot of pics, but here are the ones I kept.

Obviously, quite proud of this one.

Without a doubt, the sexiest shotgun at the class. Wood furniture professionally refinished, stock cut down to proper length, and a rail section mounted to the forearm to allow the placement of a light.

Stippling the forearm is great for traction during an "Oh shit" moment at 3am, but it kinda sucks if you planning on running the pump ~350 times in one afternoon (250 bird, 50 buck, ~50 dry).

The guy I traded with did a great job setting it up. He stippled the forearm a bit more aggressively than I would prefer but other than that I really like the set up. I’m thinking of having a tall suppressor sight installed along with a Arisus CROM and T1, but that’ll be down the road a while. For now I’m gonna get a sling and light on it and then run the dog piss out of it.

Saw this on armslist.com and drove an hour to snag it. H&R model 162, 24" smooth-bore cylinder choke barrel with rifle sights. It has some wear but mechanically checks out and isn't beat up. The kind of character that says the gun was used and enjoyed plenty but also cared for in the way that matters. Only paid $90 +tax.

I'm a sucker for the H&R/NEF singles. This is the 11th one in my inventory. I passed up several over the last week that I already had but was still tempted to get.

It needed to be a pump so I could lock it with the chamber opened to make it inoperable with a full tube and side saddle. The mount is screwed into an interior brick wall just inside the master closet. The keys are in the little nightstand safe with my G34. When I patterned it at the longest distance in my house (about 20 meters- I have a big house) it really liked winlite 12g reduced recoil shells which I can’t find anymore. It didn’t really like flite control for some reason. I know you guys aren’t big on pistol grips, the mako stock folds and has a recoil reducing spring that significantly reduces recoil.

I only don't like PG's on Mossbergs, the controls don't jive with a PG. On an 870 or something else the PG is cool.

Not big on "Pistol grip only." Nothing wrong with pistol grip stocks, except on Mossbergs, due to the tang mounted safety.

Picked up a H&R Topper 20ga. This is an older one with the thinner profile barrel so it's pretty light. This is my second 20ga with this barrel but the furniture isn't original, though it is in good shape. I think I'm going to grab a Survivor fore end and a synthetic stock to lighten it up even more and make it into a take down.

https://scontent.fapa1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/23130700_10155561348655219_1876614130614567134_n.j pg?oh=b2b17aaaa7470a7c7215469d12c5b57b&oe=5A7249FE

Here you can see the gap between the fore end and barrel showing that this furniture is for a gun with a different barrel profile.

2017 was the year of shotgun buying for me. 2018 will be the year of training on the shotgun for me. I attended a Police Firearms Instructor class in September 2017 and one day was dedicated to the shotgun. The state of Illinois still mandates shotgun training to all new recruits so it was part of the curriculum. When I went to the academy in 2002 I was given training in the shotgun, but in the PDs I have worked at/for the shotgun was replaced by the AR or turned into LL. If I shot any shotgun it was 5 rounds here and there. Started with getting the A5 then a 1301 then two 870's one a Police Magnum and a TAC-14, then a M4. I have no practical reason for the TAC-14 just got a good deal I couldn't pass up. The Police 870 was rough when it arrived, but mechanically good. The barrel went to Vang Comp and a Magpul furniture set was installed. The Aridus CROM required me to get the receiver drilled and tapped. Was able to put everything back together the other day.

I have four of them like that. The main difference is a couple have slightly more dinged up wood.

I don't know exactly what agency these guns came from, but they were very well taken care of. Rack numbers are all professionally done (I assume at the factory) and all mine have a tritium bead replacement sight that still works. (Featured in the last photo) Bores are flawless and the finish on all of them is easily 95% or better.

Sadly Remington won't be making them like that anymore.

Gunsite’s handgun stuff may be a bit dated but their social shotgun programs are well regarded.

I be,dive Rob Haught has done shotgun classes in AZ the last two December’s - his son living in AZ likey has something to to do with that. Rob is as good as it gets when it comes to shotgun training.

Might be with e mailing Chris Lapre to see if he is doing shotgun classes - no website but he does private lessons as well :cjlapre@gmail.com

Got the Benelli zeroed at 25 tonight with Hornady TAP Light Magnum slugs. Also shot some Hornady TAP 00 Light Magnum, some range fodder S&B 00 Buck, and (tried) Hornady TAP 00 Reduced Recoil. The Hornady RR will not cycle the M4. Maybe after I get some more full-power loads through it, but for now, I'll stick with the Light Magnum stuff which patterned acceptably.

Not sure why Benelli puts a Modified choke in this gun, but I think I'll grab a CYL choke from Trulock and see how these Flight Control shells do with that. From what I've read, both the Federal and Hornady FCW offerings do better with less choke. The reduced recoil TAP patterned really well, but won't cycle the gun (yet?).

ETA: I love shooting shotguns. Hands down, my favorite thing to shoot. The blast, smoke, and downrange effect, love it.

This 21” SPS Turkey has been sitting in the back of the safe with a synthetic Remington stock and Choate fore end. I decided it was time to try thto Magpul SGA, and got a good deal on the Aimpoint S1. That’s an original Adventurer’s Outpost extension and Side Saddle. Thinking of ditching that to save weight. Will probably add a Magpul clamp / sling Mount next.

1960's made Belgian 21917Auto 5 NFA Form 1, 5+1, with the friction ring in the rear position it runs everything, even low recoil Federal flite control....never a single malfunction since the barrel was shortened. 12.5" LOP, 14" BBL XS Tritium front, and before anybody gets on me about defiling a real Belgian Auto5, it was a sub $300 pawnshop pick up with no finish at all, practically in the white and pitted, with a cracked stock almost in splinters. And yes that is a copy of the Form 1 taped to the stock.

Another $300 pawn shop save. 1956 Belgian wonder that had the forearm split completely in two and duct taped together. It's still a work in process but she'll ride again...

Start looking! It took me over 5 years to find one that I was willing to chop on as they all seem to be too nice and collectible. This was the only one I found!

As an FYI, the extended tube is for a Browning BPS. It has the same threads as the Belgian Auto-5s. The Auto-5 clones and Japanese guns are different. If I were limited to a clone or Miroku gun I'd probably forego an extended tube altogether and NFA tax stamp it.

Earlier in the year I got a too good to pass deal on an 1187 Special Purpose deer gun. It has a rifle sighted barrel with Rem chokes. I found a youth stock and added the Mesa Tactical rail. The only drawback is that it doesn't run low recoil ammo. I zeroed it this afternoon with the Truball Deep Penetrators, which it kept in the black of a B8 at about 40 yards. So far I've put a couple hundred rounds through it

Is the receiver drilled and tapped? You might get a better cheek weld and be able to co witness the optic with an aridus or scalarworks mount

No, it's not drilled and tapped. I don't know when Remington started doing that. I thought about doing it myself, I've done a few 870s but decided it'd be quicker and easier to use the Mesa rail/saddle.

Time for serious cool. I was lucky to grab this. It was from the winning display of the DALLAS Arms Collectors at NRA this year from the “Guns and Gunfights of the Texas Rangers”. It was an amazing display of rare weapons and historical items. This is a Period correct shotgun modified by one of the foremost experts on 1800’s Texas weapons as a shotgun used by Terry’s Texas Rangers during the Civil War, also known as a Confederate Cavalry Shotgun. They were one of the most devastating and effective firearms used in the Civil War and later era in the West. The Texas Cavalry would ride up to enemy lines out of bayonet range, dismount and fire both barrels loaded with buckshot or God knows what, sling the shotgun and remount and charge what was left with pistols and swords.
Seriously....this gun is awe inspiring. Holding something that old and feeling so capable.

I am not going to shoot it. It is an early 1800’s Baker Lock Shotgun (1820-1850). I may need to get the EMF repro. My life is so blessed my wife wanted it hanging in the bedroom. Her and I saw the Ranger display at NRA and got to handle a real Walker on Sunday, did the Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco, the Alamo, and drinks at the Menger Hotel Bar where the Rough Riders were formed by Teddy Roosevelt Monday. On Tuesday we did the Buckhorn Bar (oldest bar in Texas and hangout for the Rough Riders) that houses an AMAZING collection of horns and Taxidermy and another Ranger Museum. Bought the Ranger Civil War Shotgun and a 1930’s Remington Model 11 (used by almost all the posse at Bonnie and Clyde ambush) today. Great several days of Texas history and guns.

I forgot to add...............my wife spent Wednesday morning at the table with a cup of coffee and pouring over the internet to identify the Texas Rangers and others in a bunch of pictures SeriousStudent was kind enough to make from ones that came from his grandfathers ranch in West Texas. Really cool to have her calling me over to look at guns and leather to compare from various photographs. It is fairly easy to go hard for Texas history.

EMF and other make really short barreled Cavalry shotguns. From the research I have been doing, the length of mine is a bit more like what was realistic as the barrels needed to be long enough to clear your horses head when fired mounted in a charge, but short enough for fast handling and good spread. Something in about the 14"-18" range (hmmmm.....somethings seem to stay good). The current reproductions are very short.........which is really cool for looking at and I imagine shooting them is an absolute hoot.

I did something similar with a Magtech 20ga but I left the barrel 19" to avoid extra paperwork. It was fun and I had plans to get the stamp and make it into a pistol of sorts but never did. The Late Boyscout did a video about a sub-$300 double barrel and was tempted to get to cut down.

So I bought this today. MKA 1919. Gonna set it up for 3 gun. Will update once I get some rounds through it.

I’ve finally managed to get all the stuff together to put this conversion together. Have to give a shout out to Marc at B5 Systems for giving me the stock (they’re based in my City and have been good to the PD). Gonna put some rounds through it tomorrow. The lower is from Tooth and Nail Armory. So it now looks like this:

It ran like a scalded dog with birdshot last year at FB3G, but hiccuped a couple times with slugs. I’m hoping the conversion makes that go away.

Found a couple more H&R single shot 12 gauges. The top one is in really nice condition and the bottom one uses a spring detent to hold on the fore end rather than a screw so it takes down very quick and easy. I have a bunch of these already but I asked the store owner if he'd make me a deal on both. He said $75 each and I said "sold".

My absolute favorite gauge. It's a shame that the 20 eclipsed it.

I have a 1933 model 12 Winchester, a 1947 Stevens 530A [sxs] and a 50's era single shot in 16.

The 530A is my go to gun for partridge and small game.

A pawn shop near me had a sale, everything that had been in the store at least 6 months was 50% off. The pump is a Mossberg 835 (basically a 500 chambered for 3 1/2" shells") It's rough cosmetically, the stock is cracked to the point that it's not worth fixing (Mossberg stocks are cheap so that doesn't take much) and it's dirty so the action is sluggish. And the choke tube is missing. I have a black polymer stock for it so I just need a matching for end for the longer action tube on these older 835's. Havlin has them for $22. The price tag was marked down to $150 so I offered $125 and they accepted. The Little single is a 20ga H&R Pardner that was marked down to $75. It's also dinged up a little bit on the outside and the butt pad is hard but I think I'll put this one in a synthetic stock.

Probably. I have an even shorter youth model with a 22" barrel and I also have a couple older models with thinner profile barrels that are easier to carry and maneuver but they are pretty light for a 20ga so felt recoil might come into play. Anywho, H&R/NEF singles are still out there in force and I still find them for under $100 on a regular enough basis that I have to stop buying every $100 one I come across. In fact I really need to stop buying them altogether unless it's a special variant I don't have because I have so many regular Topper and Pardner 12's and 20's that I would have to dig them out and count them to know the exact number.

This is the 835 I picked up the other day. Swapped on some polymer furniture I had laying around for it and took it apart and cleaned all the gook out. Action cycles a lot smoother now. It looks like it lived somewhere dusty but didn't get shot a ton. Probably either in a farm truck or shop for pest control.

The subject of spare am for the gauge comes up a lot, with most saying you will only have what’s on the gun. I added an Aridus QDC to my 870 and thought about adding an extra carrier in a Taco mag pouch. This assumes one has time to add the belt. So instead I went with the low budget solution, a Bob Allen shell belt. Adjusted long I can sling it bandolier style, or snug it around my waist if time permits.

After measuring and trying them all, I ground one to fit. Hard to believe they don’t supply one to fit the rib spacing of the 870, but it apparently they don’t.
