Project grade Remington Model 11 that I need to get busy and finish. I need to square up the barrel end and mount sights.

That's some old school cool right there. Does an 870 mag extension fit it, or did you have to fab up something special?

What are you going to do for sights?

There's a 20 gauge M11 local with a 19" barrel and plain bead. My experience with my project 11-48 is that it will need a much higher bead/pedestal.

Thanks! As best I recall that's an 870 extension. I did have to trim a couple of threads off the mag tube for the extension to screw all the way down but that was it. It'll probably get cerakoted black and I'm debating a d&t on top for a pic rail and a dot of some sort. Because I bloody well can.:D

If the serial number lists are right, it's a 1919 production and it had been fluffed, buffed and parkerized within a inch of it's life when I picked it up so I had no qualms about cutting it. I do wish I'd done was a little bit of research beforehand (this was an impulse buy for sure) because it's old enough that there's been at least 2 parts revisions/redesigns and of course the newer production parts that are available from Numrich, etc don't fit one this old. Oh well.

My buddy has a beater model 11. I thinks he's kinda fond of it but I need to try and talk him out of it.

I know they're expensive but it would be cool to see Browning put our an Auto-5 Whippet Gun 12ga "firearm".

My TAC-14... trades a 10/22 Takedown for it. Had a few .22s, but rather have that “firearm.” Being legal in NJ, even more appealing.

Did the Magpul handstop, sidesaddle, sling mods first. Then, went with the vent-rib barrel. Love the look of it, being I had my Ithaca vent-rib barrel cut down to 20ish”.

The folding brace really is a nice addition, and is very solid. Like someone doing push-ups on it extended type of solid. But if you shoulder it, the sight plane is pretty low.

So, I got the Remington rifle sight barrel. Think it has a modified choke, as well. The rifle sights raise the sight plane high enough that your cheekweld is more normal than the bead sights.

What are you going to do for sights?
Sorry, I just saw your question. If I don't do a dot, some sort of rifle front sight. Maybe both. Not sure about a rear sight.

Came across another H&R Topper in 12 ga, one of my nicer ones too. I have several of these so I can eventually leave a couple of these and some other guns at relative's houses so I can hop on a plane with just a carry on bag when I go to visit.

The picked up an 18” low profile XS sighted IC barrel. Had to try it out. This is not the gun it will live on, but it shoots well and looks pretty cool to boot.

Top group is 8 pellet Flite Control, bottom is 8 pellet Remington reduced recoil. Interesting that each threw one pellet wide.

Andy, the light is a Malkoff M91T head (https://malkoffdevices.com/collections/large-malkoff-led-flashlights/products/m91t-md3) on a MD3 body (https://malkoffdevices.com/collections/parts-and-miscellaneous-items/products/md3-body-and-switch). The mount is a L&M (https://www.mountsplus.com/lm-single-ring-shotgun-magazine-tubes-mount.html).

I have the mount butted up against the mag tube clamp to keep it from shifting under recoil. The mount and light have thus far not budged.

Dang, people haven’t been buying shotguns since 2019 🤔

Picked this one up about a month ago. Mossberg 590a1 with 18.5” barrel, ghost ring sights, and screw in chokes. Pretty sure it is off the catalog now, but used to be model # 50774.

870? What light mount is that?

entropy
05-23-2020, 07:49 PM
Yep. It’s a newer 870 HD. Works so far, no issues. About 700 assorted thru it to date. The mount is this believe it or not is this:

https://monstrumtactical.com/monstrum-tactical-shotgun-accessory-mount/

NH Shooter posted a pic of his shortened 11-87 with this:

http://cdmgear.com/modc.html

but they have not been available. So a few beers and a debit card later I figured for $25 bucks, I’ve made undoubtedly much poorer decisions in the past. It initially had some issues sliding around during recoil, but some tread tape seems to have solved that. I snugged the mount screws down with blue loctite, and will run it a bunch this week to make sure, but so far so good. My goal was to have something snug up as close as I could to the barrel to allow the gun easy access in and out of a soft case.

I tried to link directly to amazon, but my account pops up with the link. Good for you, bad for me! They are both listed on there, bit the CDM is out of stock.

Next mod will be sling swivels; checking with local 'smiths to see if I can get the barrel lug machined for a swivel screw. If so, that will be the second to last thing done.
(The stock screw is an easy one, being a pro woodworker and all. <grin>)
I will likely round the top of the recoil pad to emulate Pat's approach to helping with a fast mount, as described by TCinVA elsewhere. It's still supple and without cracks in it's 80th year.

For those that have not tried one, the Beartooth Products Shield 2.0 neoprene stock cuff is a *really nicely made* cuff, and seems to fit quite well. Totally worth the $16, and made in Montana, too.

NFA Short Barrel Shotguns are a no-go in The Great State of Minnesota, except for historical C & R type things, which you are not allowed to use as a weapon. I can SBR a rifle with little to no hitch, but not a shottie.

https://www.gunowners.mn/short_barreled_rifles_and_shotguns

I spoke to the owner at Diamond Gunsmithing in Ithaca (former head 'smith at Ithaca Gun Company for decades) - a set of sights mounted to my barrel (also being further shortened to 18") would be $400+, and fitting a period rifle sighted 21" barrel would be $350+. Ithaca models before serial #855xxx (approximately 1955) all need individual head spacing and fitment.
I'd rather put the do$h into a more modern gun and training.

Most all of the polar bears around here are easily subdued with a warm robe and a hot toddy. ;)

The best part about that story is it was not even a unique situation.

Commissioner Stern said it was the first fatal incident involving a bear in a New York City zoo in five years.
On Sept. 26, 1982, a 29-year-old man was found dead inside the polar bear cage at the Central Park Zoo. He had apparently climbed a series of fences to get inside the cage and was killed by Scandy, a 1,200-pound bear.

I think the fitted barrels were a thing till ‘65.

My Dad’s 37, which was purchased new in ‘62 or ‘63 falls in the fitted barrel serial number range.

I’ll check out diamond.

Bought an 11-87 today but thanks to CBI being backed up and my work schedule I won't be able to pick it up for a week. I'll be honest, I don't know how well I did. I'm sure I didn't get the deal of the century or probably even of the week but I know enough to know that this should be a good scattergun. I've bought guns from this shop before for fair prices so I said screw it and bought it without looking into the prices.

A friend of a friend of a friend wanted to unload this pretty nice 1100 for $300 so I jumped on it. The extra barrel was just lopped off, not terribly but not well either and there's no bead on it so I'll probably have a smith cut it to 18" and put a bead on it, maybe even thread it for chokes. Don't have a plan because I wasn't looking for one of these but I couldn't pass up that price.

60496

A look through the Weaver Quick-sight. It doesn't show up on camera well but if you look really close you can kinda see a red dot in there. The top of the sight has a fiber optic rod and it gathers light and bounces it down into the tube you look through. The bead isn't high enough to co-witness but with taller sights it would be possible.

Lemme try this again;
https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?17668-Gauge-Pic-Thread&p=622117&viewfull=1#post622117

Here's the story behind:

I was still living in NJ, and walked into my dealer's storefront to see this shotgun standing in the corner, with it's barrel literally hacked off at 26", at an angle. I inquired, and Jim tells me that he paid 20 bucks for it at an estate sale, and that there's something wrong with the action, because the slide won't move to the rear.

Never owning a 12, I ask what he wanted for it, and he replied 'gimme 50 bucks and it's yours.
Couldn't get the money out fast enough.
Those who know, the 12 requires recoil, or a small push forward on the slide to release it!

I sent it off to Briley in Tx, where they cut her to 25 1/2", and installed their thin wall choke system and an ivory bead... At the time I believe it was $185 and included 3 chokes of choice. I soaked all the internals in fast orange, and the years of crud wiped right off.
It's become my go to turkey gun, foul weather gun, behind the back door gun.
I really like the 16 gauge, and now have 3 shotguns chambered in it.

My 11-87 how I got it and after I got done with it. Added a Mesa Tactical Urbino stock, Wilson Combat dome head safety, new action spring, GG&G charging handle, Wilson Combat +2 tube extension and Nordic components tube clamp. I have an XS big dot coming in tomorrow and I need to add some velcro for shell cards plus figure out a light and front sling mount. The Urbino is a big improvement of the 14" LOP factory stock but I'm not really digging it. The grip is large and my hand is cramped on it and I can't put the safety one easily. The dome safety with this stock makes taking the safety off almost instinctive and automatic.

Now for something completely different.

This photo is from around 2007 I think. That's me, my Dad, and my brother. My dad and I are holding sequential serial numbered Marlin bolt action 12 Gauge slug guns. I think they're 512 Slug Masters. I'll check when I'm over at there house in a few hours. Mom's has a leather sling and shoots a bit better group. So Dad uses it. I'm holding Dad's with a nylon sling, I didn't own my own 12G yet. My brother is using a Mossberg 500 in 20 Gauge. He grew into his looks. I swear.

I grew up with almost entirely bolt action 12G shotguns. My brother used his 20G Mossy for everything, and it served him pretty well. Eventually I picked up an 1187. Truth be told, I've shot a hell of a lot more critters with Dad's older Marlin 12G bolt action beater gun (not pictured) than any other shotgun. I think this was the first year that my county of Upstate NY allowed rifles for deer season. None of my family ever bothered with them.

Edit to add:

Here is us with a family friend. He used a Mosin with a forward mounted pistol scope that year. He recently sent me these photos. I had never seen them.

Yup. Marlin 512 SlugMaster. 2 of em. They're going to hell without much use. I'm going to clean them soon.

I bought back that little .410 SXS from my first post and used it last month on a Clays and Feathers outing. 100rds of sporting clays in the AM, a BBQ lunch, and Pheasants, Quail, and Chukka in the PM behind dogs. Great experience and great time with family. The little .410 was more of a challenge than a 12 would have been, but still did its job, even on the Pheasants, and probably saved more meat on the little quail.

I carried the ghetto version of that on patrol. 14”, bead sight, Surefire forearm, wood stock with teeth marks on it.

I miss it. I would pay the freight for a SBS stamp but is forbidden in WA.

This is my very favorite shotgun in its most current configuration. It started out as a police trade-in 870 Magnum that I got for cheap. I used it for a few years as my 'QA' gun, where I'd test out new gear/configurations to see if I wanted to incorporate them on my primary defensive 870. Eventually I decided to SBS it and play around with short barrel ideas around 2016 or so. Of course, I took it to Vang Comp to do their barrel work, and talked to them about a specific iron sight idea I had. My idea had merit, but my implementation was going to be economically infeasible, so their lead gunsmith GT came up with an alternative that used modified COTS parts. He inlet an express rifle rear sight into a vent rib bbl, cut the bbl to 14", installed an XS regular dot up front, and milled a giant U-notch out of the fixed leaf of the rear. Then he milled a tighter semi-aperture into the flip-up leaf and zeroed it for Federal Tru-Ball slugs @ 50 yards. The wings of the U-notch look kind of like horns, and given the rear sight was intended for a big-bore African stopping rifle, we dubbed the concept "M'Bogo", the Swahili word for Cape buffalo.

The barrel has had Vang's signature internal work to reduce pattern size, though I opted not to have it ported given my big hands and their proximity to said ports on a 14" tube. I also added Vang's big dome safety and stainless mag follower, Magpul's excellent SGA stock, a GG&G sling plate behind the receiver (which necessitated a custom-length stock bolt) and a BFG padded Vickers sling. I initially had a factory polymer corncob forend and an Aridus Q-DC sidesaddle on her, along with a Wilson/Scattergun +1 extension. I swapped out the forend for a Hogue, and noticed that unless I was meticulous about hand placement, I could butt my big hand up against the Q-DC and short-stroke the gun, which had never happened before with the corncob. That made me swap the otherwise excellent Aridus unit out for a Vang velcro sidesaddle instead, and the issue was resolved. Most recently, I swapped the Wilson +1 out for a Vang +1 just to keep the gun as Vang as possible (the Wilson will get used on another project I'm working on).

This particular photo was taken by Cody Stewart at Vang's last month, because I want to keep a photographic record of how this gun changes over time. Words can't really express how much I adore this gauge. It fits me like a glove, it runs like a scalded-ass ape, and it does everything I want a shotgun to do. The vent rib brings my eye to the sights and looks badass too.

While it's certainly no comparison, I have a vent rib on one of my S&W 3000s, with two beads. I put one of the inexpensive snap over FO sights behind the rear bead and it made a HUGE improvement in sighting, both in quickness and accuracy.

Your setup is a work of art.

Oh, I bet it would! That's a really great idea. I am a firm believer in "Vent Rib All The Things".

Thanks! GT and the boys at Vang did a hell of a job that frankly does better than my original idea would have.

Most of the way done. Still needs a WML and, ideally, a Zhukov hand guard, but I’m pretty impressed with the Aimpoint/semi-auto combo as a HD tool. It certainly simplifies the shooting process.

Every time you post that 11-87 I get a little weak knee’d. Back when I was in college I caught the clay shooting bug. Since I was, um, financially challenged at the time I bought a lightly used 11-87 Premier with a 28” barrel and spent money on reloading components (dad had a MEC 600jr) and shooting fees.

I lost count of the rounds I ran in that old gun and truly regret that I traded it off. I think I traded it in shortly after my 22nd birthday on a Smith revolver, but can’t be sure anymore.

My 870 SBS had a factory length Wingmaster stock. As did my Waupun Prison Stevens 520 clone. A chop saw and a Miles Gilbert recoil pad installation fixture gave me two shotguns with roughly 12.5" LOP. They are pictured with a 1301 Comp Pro w/ Aimpoint Micro (the easiest to hit with shotgun I have ever fired - 43/50 the first round of Sporting Clays I used it for. Close to a personal record.).

The second pic is the 520 broken down. I plan on making a small case that will hold the shotgun and 15 rounds as a traveling companion.

I always wanted to do that to a Winchester 1897 or 12... 18” barrel, that can be taken down to smaller that my TAC-14’s OAL.

If there was a way to have the tube left loaded... that would make it an awesome truck gun. Lock the barrel on, cycle action, and ready to go.

Shocked that shotgun companies never brought that feature back in modern times. You’d think it would be developed better... just look at Ruger’s takedown systems.

It’s a keeper! Ran 50 rounds today with the OEM mag spring, the Nordic extension and follower. Shooting consisted of a mixture of Federal Reduced Recoil FC, military buck, suprema 9P buck, and some target loads. It cycled everything perfectly and patterned very well with all the buck, but especially well with the FC. At 25 yards with FC I could cover the spread with my hand.
target is at 12 yards.

This was my father's shotgun when he was on the job. It started as a 28" model 500 in 1973 when he bought it new for $100. He and a friend cut it down to 24" so it would fit better in the trunk of his patrol unit.
They eventually got 870P's for each vehicle, then mini 14's.

When I got it from him 3 months ago, I had it made to a 18.5"

Came across this 20 gauge youth model 11-87 at a pawn shop today. Was able to pick it up for $550 out the door. It had some crud on the outside that may have been rust. Whatever it was it cleaned up pretty easy. The gun has not been shot much at all. If the gas piston wasn't dirty I might think the gun was unfired.

I'll use it as a stand-in for my 11-87 Police 12ga when I don't feel like destroying my shoulder or my bank account. Choate still makes 20ga mag extensions. The barrel on it is 20" so not sure if I'll bother trying to find/make a shorter barrel or not.

20 gauge youth model 11-87 .

A close friend set one of those up for his wife as an HD option, she did quite well with it. He went all the way and sent the barrel to Vang and he did his magic, sans the porting. Limited buckshot choices of course but it worked very well in terms of improving patterns. He left the 21" vent rip as is and put a fiber optic on the front sight.

My plan was to set it up that way and at least have fun with it. Figured if I was gonna set it up like an HD gun might as well get some ammo and have it ready as a backup option. I was looking around and I only found #2 and #3 buck and only 2 of those were designed for home defense. The best looking option was made by Remington so that's probably not going to work out. Plenty of good slug options though since 20ga slug guns are still popular for deer hunting. On top of the ammo situation I could only find one used 18" barrel on Ebay. If I keep the 21" barrel, everything else I want for it would run about $100. Any route to an 18" barrel is probably going to cost at least $150, probably more.

Suppose it might make a good woods/camp gun loaded up with decent slugs. Or maybe just keep it as a fun gun.

There is 16 gauge shells available out there as well.
I have two of them, and I'm really hooked on the 16;
A Stevens double SxS and a Winchester model 12.
They're a joy to carry on a hunt and very comfortable to shoot.
Not the thump of a 12, and not sharp like a 20.

There used to be a house here. Small house. It’s on a piece of land called Barcelona Neck. You drive on to a golf course and the behind it and in winter it’s a hunting ground. After winter it’s a place where tons of people walk the trails. It’s a peninsula surrounded by the bay.

Deer hunting. Managed lands lottery. Saw no deer until just before quitting time. Had no shot. Boo lol.

where did you source the barrel? I have an 870P I think would be a lot more useful as an SBS but haven't found spare barrels anywhere.

It started out as a TAC-14 with a 14 inch barrel...:D

You're the second poster I've seen here putting those sights on a home defense shotgun. Any thoughts on durability? I'm thinking of throwing a set on my project 870 until I can afford to have the rib milled for a set of XS express sights.

Sorry delayed on this. For a $40 set of sights, I think they're just fine for a gun sitting in a safe. Mounting them to the rib makes them tall and I suspect they'd get banged around a lot for duty service. But in the safe? Not concerned.

I'll sight them in next week and can give more thoughts. But the sight picture is good and the general construction is solid. I do need to take them back off and add some Vibratite to the screws. But they clamp firmly, only trick is to do a criss-cross pattern when you tighten them down. I tried going side-to-side and ended up with a little bit of the sight offset. But otherwise, nice and firm. I appreciate that the rear sight adjusts with a slot head set of screws, it is both elevation and windage adjustable.

They seem okay:

Flamingo fired these two standing at ~20y and the target was quartered away from him. First slug I sent was 1" low at 20. I didn't even bother adjusting them. 1" low with a 3/4oz foster slug works fine for minute of driveway.

Similarly, at 20 no problem keeping 9-pellet #1 buckshot in about a 10" circle.

I have a set of Williams Firesight Ghost Rings that drop onto a factory rifle-sighted 870 barrel. I like them, have bought more sets of Williams since trying them out. However, I've been wanting to sell the 870 set since I divested from all things 870 in the dempanic.

My long-term project 870 build is finally getting there and I've been spending some range time with it. Push-pull and managing the safety are new and taking some work, but today saw some real progress.

I ended up going with these sights: https://fusionfirearms.com/fiber-optic-fixed-sight-set-for-shotgun-ribs-6mm-to-8mm

Assuming they survive (so far so good), I'll probably stick with them. I really appreciate the lower profile compared to other clamp-on options, which keeps the natural eye-drawing benefits of the vent rib.

It needs a side saddle setup and, eventually, a trip to Wilson for the Remington Steal service, if only to get a Flextab kit in it (and fix this mismatched blued receiver/black painted barrel nonsense). For now, I'm just going to shoot it a lot. It's an old gun that's sat around a lot more than it's been used.

Aimsurplus has used 14" rifle-sighted 870 barrels for $130 so I grabbed one and got myself a Tac-14. The A2 grip is just what I had laying around. I think a Magpul grip is in order along with a +1 tube extension and dome head safety. If I really get to liking this thing I'll spring for a Surefire fore end but the engine in my truck took a shit on my way back from picking up the Tac-14 so might be a minute before I do that.

Purchased a second set of handguards to stipple with a bit more of a mature/M1-ish layout, while preserving the originals. Apparently the “NEW” handguards purchased were of an older iteration, because they would not fit, as the mold did not have the notch for the barrel indexing collar. I fit the handguard and no one would be the wiser. Added a match saver, having to counter sink the nut to avoid piston contact. It worked well, but in hindsight, I wish I would have stuck to Velcro, given acceptance of Velcro as an accepted means for side saddles. 93658https://i.imgur.com/v4YPKb6.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/HHwgisY.jpg

Had to get into the under-the-stairs closet that's behind my weight rack today. My 6yr old Jr. Hardy boy had to inspect everything in it, obvi. He points to the ridiculously long rifle bag in the corner and asks what's in it.

I cheerfully got out Uncle John I's (no bs, that was his first name: John I) well used double barrel 12 gauge. John I was actually my paternal grandfather's cousin, but he was Uncle John I to the rest of the family. John I never lived anywhere other than his family's house high in the hills outside Morehead, KY and died there, quite the content old bachelor.

He was well removed from town and ruled his property and often fed himself with what he harvested with his 12g (or the Remington Nylon .22 my dad had given him). Many an ungulate and anything John I even remotely suspected of being a puff adder -the deadliest snake in the world, he'd explain- found their demise in a blast from one of the barrels. Family lore is that a home intruder met the same fate and was subsequently disposed of without troubling the authorities with a matter that was already concluded. John I would neither confirm nor deny.

John I was our family genealogist and Dad, being forever in thrall with the knowledge of his elders, was John I's favorite kin (and greatest provider in John I's later years). Dad would tell great stories about John I walking through the family burial plot pointing out who'd been killed on which side of the Civil War, the cousin blown up with his moonshine still, others killed in a car crash or shootout with revenuers while running said 'shine and, of course, the one who'd been shot for sneaking around with another man's wife. John I wasn't popular with all our kin, but they didn't dare cross him for fear of what he'd reveal about their branch of family.

When I was 13, my grandparents held a family reunion on their spread (also in the hills outside Morehead, but a damn sight closer to town than John I's) over a 3 day weekend. John I told Grandpa on Thursday that he was too ill to attend and was already passed when Dad went to check on him Friday morning. His funeral was held that Sunday, still holding the record for number of blood kin in attendance. As was his wish, he was buried in the family graveyard that, predating the Civil War, is officially a historical site.

It was a godawful, cold and rainy Sunday, and back then, the family graveyard was not at all accessible by car. John I's casket was delivered as close as physically possible to the grave site in the bed of a cousin's 4x4 truck. Every available 4x4 in the family and one tractor with a long flatbed trailer shuttled women and young children while every capable male hoofed it up the hill. The rain stopped just as we got to the storm felled tree that blocked all motorized progress. I was the youngest pall bearer and struggled to earn my position as we carried John I the rest of the way. Years later, I was at the movies with my girlfriend Susie and my best bud Chris to see Patrick Swayze's Next of Kin. When we got to the scene of them offloading the dead brother's casket (Bill Paxton, fwiw) into the bed of a 4x4, I broke into loud laughter. Susie thought I was an asshole and Chris nearly pee'd himself laughing at my inappropriate guffaws and the stares they caused.

John I left his trusty shotgun to Dad, which caused much consternation and dismay amongst the elder kin as it skipped a generation. Grandpa said John I's will was to be followed to the letter and Dad displayed the old double barrel for any and all to see. After Dad's funeral, John I's shotgun and Dad's beloved Ruger Single-Six came home with me. For a decade, I've intended to turn the shotgun over to someone who knows about such things to have it thoroughly cleaned, tuned, sprung, etc. Then I'll shoot it. Then I'll display it on my wall. Maybe this year. Anyway, my son has now seen another piece of his eventual inheritance.

I need a better overall pic, but these will have to suffice for the purposes of sharing this story for now. Thanks for reading.

Scored a trade in Police Magnum this afternoon. I wasn’t looking but for $350 I thought it was decently priced. I had shot Ashton’s Vang Comp 870 at a recent class and liked it better than my bead sighted 870.

It won’t be fired with that stock. I knew I had one or two wood buttstocks at home but I left the gun shop and drove to the nearest Cabelas and bought a Magpul stock. Hope to get it swapped this weekend.

Picked up a pair of 11-87 police shotguns I had bought from Sportsman's outdoor superstore. Picked them up because they were only $450 each and the add showed rifle sights though I knew I might not get them. Now that they're here I decided to let my buddy have one for what I paid and I'm going back-and-forth on whether to upgrade the second one and leave it and a few other guns at my dad's house so I can fly up there without having to check guns or just sell it and my other 11-87 Police and spring for a pair of A300s or something. In any case I feel like the shotguns were a good buy. One looks beat up but racking the bolt feels nice and smooth. Wear parts on them aren't expensive to replace and even most of the upgrades for them aren't expensive.

The gun on the bottom was my grandfathers. A Baker 12 sxs. He was born in a log cabin along a river in the rural midwest in 1897. He hunted, did farm work, and anything possible to hustle and make money. He had a cheap 22 single shot that he used to kill all sorts pf smaller game that he often sold to the butcher in town besides family meat. He often bought partial boxes of 22 shells, full boxes were too expensive. He always stopped and looked at the Baker gun in the window of the hardware store. After some time, the hardware store owner gave him the gun. His production of game for sale increased substantially.

At one point he and his brother drove horses and wagons about 100 miles and shot ducks and geese on a larger river and brought the full wagons back to sell. One hustle when young was to buy sheep and summer them in Montana, selling them after the summer for profit. he did it 2 summers. One of those summers he encountered a black bear coming around a large rock, it was not friendly. He shot it with both barrels loaded with bird shot, knocking it down, ran around the rock and reloaded, to repeat several times until the bear was done.

He became successful in various business endeavors, lived in a larger town, yet still liked to hunt ducks and geese. Dad said his hunting clothes of choice were older wool dress suits, doubled up, old dress shoes with two pairs of socks and galoshes, and was wicked deadly on flying ducks, able to hit 2 coming in, reload and hit 2 more before a flight of them passed out of range. The gun says "Choke Bored" and is very tightly choked. I pulverized a pheasant once with it when it jumped really close and i forgot the head shoot it.

He never took very good care of it, it was a tool. Dad had it restocked, reblued and got him a takedown case for it. His dad used to just put it in the trunk of the car with no case to take it anywhere. He passed when I was very small, I never really knew him. I started shooting it when a kid with Savage 410 inserts, which pattern pretty good. I later had the chambers opened to standard dimensions, forcing cones lengthened some, had the barrel latch rebuilt, and a good pad put on it. I shot clays with it now and then when dad was into it, and hunted with it a few times. Mostly I just enjoy having it, it looks great in the cabin and is fun to use now and then.

I think it's @ 12.5" or so...I'll have it measure later. If you order it for the 1100/87, it comes with buttpad spacers that Choate claims have to be used to clear the action tube nut but I didn't have any issues with clearance without the spacers.

Just measured...without any spacers, its 13.25".

Per Choate:

The Mark 5 Conventional Stock features our spacer system which come with one 1/2 spacers and one 1/4 spacer included which adjusts the length of pull from 13 1/2″ to 13 3/4″ . You can lengthen your stock by simply adding new spacers and longer screws. NOTE- The 1100 and 11-87 shotguns can not be shortened shorter than 13 1/2 inches because of the recoil spring tube that protrudes form the back of the receiver.

Mine has plenty of room for the action tube nut and doesn't require any spacers.

I had wanted to use the Streamlight Protac RM M LOK Mount which allows you to remove the rail mount assembly and attach the light directly to it and the M LOK Slots. But the way the Magpul forend is made, it won't install flat in that location. I added a 3 inch piece of M LOK rail, and then disassembled the mount (There was some creative engineering involved) as I wanted the knob on the bottom rather than the top. I fastened a Magpul QD angled sling rail mount to the rail and installed the light. Everything was Blue Loctited and is holding well so far. Hope this helps.

I need to try that. I currently have the same light and forend combo with the light on the right side and a tape switch on the left. I find it kindof annoying and like the simplicity of tail cap only setups but I’m worried about the light hitting my hand in recoil.

Also the Magpul cantilever mount works with the forend.

Anyone know what the “chisels” or other tools are in the case?

Per this site, http://www.hunting-heritage.com/blog/index.php/2018/04/30/jules-bury-liege-best-gunmaker/ Jules Bury built guns from 1896 to 1947. It's hard to tell from that image, but I'd bet that the case and the tools are modern reproductions, correct for that style of gun but not original.

The gun itself is a sidelock. They're significantly more expensive than box lock guns, and they were often sold cased with any tools that the owner (or his valet) would need to maintain it. I can't tell from that image whether the locks are hand-detachable but a lot of them were. That's because most ammo in that era used corrosive priming if not black powder or early smokeless that didn't burn cleanly. Pierced primers were also not uncommon, so the recommended maintenance schedule for that gun probably included complete disassembly and scrubbing after every use. The gun would have been stored at the owner's country house, but it would have traveled with him for shoots on other properties, so the valet would need them to clean the gun every night after it had been used away from home.

With that in mind, the things that look like chisels are probably screwdrivers that have been fitted to the screws on the gun to keep the heads from getting burred during disassembly.

The round brass thing with the chisels is probably an oil can that goes with the brush to the left of it.

The tool at lower left in the main tool compartment is probably for removing/changing firing pin bushings or dealing with the pins inside the locks. (It could also be a spare handle for the screwdriver bits.) The tool at upper left is probably either a handle for a cleaning rod that's stored elsewhere in the case or a tool for cleaning the chambers.

The two brass pieces on either side of the upper right compartment are probably snap caps. Not sure about the round brass thing between them. Maybe an anvil or tool block for holding the lock during disassembly or reassembly while was dismounted from the gun.

Mostly guesses, but I hope this helps.

So I figured out how to use the Streamlight RM Mount. Disassemble the forend. Mark the location and drill two holes, I used a 17/64 bit. I elongated the holes a bit with a round file to get the bosses on the rear of the mount to fit into the holes and install the mount. Make sure you have enough clearance in the forend in relation to the magazine tube and if you have an extension. I had no issues, but measure twice and cut once applies. I used a one inch piece of rail to mount the sling QD. This method gives more room for your hand and thumb and less chance of your thumb being beaten in recoil.

Form 1ed Mossberg Shockwave with SGA, Streamlight TL-Racker and I can’t remember who oversize safety button. Trying to keep this one simple for the house.

Are the Rackers legit? They look a bit more ergonomic than the latest Surefire forends.

To be honest I’m about to find out. I mounted it years ago (2017?) when I got the Shockwave. It has a lot of road miles, it was stuffed in the back of the CR-V for a few years in my local and long distance travels. It still works so that says something. Is it Tier 1? Doubtful, but neither am I.

I was in a class last month with a guy who was using one. My recollection is that he was unhappy with it by the end of class but I don’t know why.

Yeah, I don’t think I’d be doing a class with one.

Either TCinVA or LHS mentioned previously that the Racker’s shape isn’t conducive to push-pull recoil mitigation and it ends up smashing the user in the hand.

Yeah. It's an ergonomic nightmare.

Silly Dr...that's why they make Dragon's Breath rounds.

...or, you know, the Streamlight 870 mount works pretty well too.

Yeah it's really suboptimal from a holding-onto-the-gun perspective. Antithetical to push-pull for the most part, and overly slick. I've seen people make it work (hell, we had a guy earn a Skills Gauge coin last month running one) but he hated the thing all class.

Found this really neat H&R Topper 158 .410 shotgun for $100. I didn't know they made them with this slender of a barrel profile. Later in their production all calibers and gauges would go to the same barrel profile so they could all share the same furniture but this makes the smaller bores heavy. This is still a little heavy for a .410 but much lighter than later models.

Went and hit up some pawn shops a ways north of town. Picked up the Shockwave on the bottom for $385 out the door and the NEF Pardner 12 and 12ga Mossberg 500 above it were at my next stop and together they were less than the shockwave. Here's the kicker, the barrel on the 500 was cut down from a longer barrel, the muzzle is square to the bore but the rib is cut just a bit crooked. But it's also been threaded for chokes which I didn't even realize when I bought it. So I've got a 20" vent rib barrel threaded for chokes. Pretty sweet. I'm going to pull the shell carrier off the Shockwave and stick it on the 500.

Edit: The longer ejector screw that holds on the shell holder plate was really in there with some kind of threadlocker that worked a little too well. I got it out but it was just mangled enough that I knew if I installed it again getting it out would require power tools. So an OEM ejector screw and trigger group pin are on order.

Also ordered some upgrades from defender tactical. Their version of a recoil strap, a mini shell adapter, and their safety/rear sight kit.

Despite having an A300, for whatever reason the Stoeger M3000 defense just would not get out of my head. So I found one at Scheels.

LOP is 14 3/4" but with the pistol grip it seems manageable to my large frame ultimately this will probably be a fun gun but I'm tempted to get a mossberg stock adapter and then an AR15 adapter and see how that setup works.

Upgraded the light setup on my M2: Surefire M340C and UE07 tapeswitch mounted via GGG rail mount. After trying several shotgun light solutions over the years including Dedicated Surefire forends, X300’s, and an M300 without tape switch, I think I am finally happy with this. I’m able to grip the gun the way I prefer and the light is out of the way until I need it. The Pro mount allows it to pivot to stay close to the gun’s centerline, while also providing a little spill illumination to the front bead. The tube is stocked with 8rds LE1321B and a 9th on the lifter.

I dig it.

870 Tactical I bought a couple years back, I was told it was a police trade in. It came with an XS ghost ring and rail, and an 18” REM choke barrel. I added a Magpul stock and an Aimpoint Micro and ran it in a SymTac class last summer. I picked up an NOS Remington extra full turkey choke earlier this month. I checked 2 3/4” and 3” Federal Grand Slam loads out of it this afternoon, and checked the POI with Federal eight pellet 00. My 1187 Special Purpose would shoot Federal Grand Slam, TruBall, and Hornady Critical Defense with the same sight setting. Eventually I’ll check TruBall slugs in it.
