Week 133: Finding Your Level

Results may be posted until November 9th, 2015.

Designed by CCT125US
Range: 5yd
Target: Shape Target V4 MOD (attached)
Start position: varies
Rounds fired: 10

This drill is designed to improve shooter accuracy and speed. Shapes can be shot in any order. You will need a shot timer for levels 2-4. When you can shoot a level clean, twice in a row, it is time to increase difficulty. When a shooter cleans level 4 twice, increase rd per shape by 1.

Please see the target for a further description of the various Levels.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Pistol and holster used (if applicable)

Level attempted

Hits for each shape

Please feel free to report multiple runs/advancing in levels.

Level 2 from the ready.

Tried level 3 after two clean runs of level 2. Couldn't make the times on level 3.

Cleaned level 1 with my borrowed ruger .22! Did level 2 a few times and cleaned it one or twice but usually had some misses. Gonna keep shooting this some more. I like it.

I gave the wife 3 magazines and a quick run down on the loading and unloading specifics of this ruger and off she went. She came back with this! One proud (and scared) husband!

Level attempted : 1

Hits for each shape :
1) clean, -1" square
2) clean, -1" square

I started each run with the 1" square and even if I missed I finished the drill. So the first run of each attempt was clean and the second run I missed the 1" square. So needless to say I couldn't clean the drill twice to move on to level two. Will try again next week.

I "know" I can clean Level 1. But I've grown to become a big proponent of answering questions like "can you do X?" with just trying to do X then and there and finding out for real. So, in that vein, here is me shooting Level 1 clean twice, on demand.

http://i772.photobucket.com/albums/yy6/dove-pf/Training%20Journal/2015-10-14%20Weekly%20Practice/IMAG0645_zpsp9kn996f.jpg (http://s772.photobucket.com/user/dove-pf/media/Training%20Journal/2015-10-14%20Weekly%20Practice/IMAG0645_zpsp9kn996f.jpg.html)

Now for the business. I struggle with Level 2 a lot, and always have. I always shoot from smallest to largest. The 2" dot is almost always the worst for me, which makes no sense since I feel I do better shooting dots at 7 yds and Dot Torture at 5 yds all the time. I rarely clean it.

Well there's a first time for everything. I shot the 2" clean in the par time, and fucked everything else up. Unbelievable. I had terrible technique on the 3" and 4". Especially the 4": I could feel myself just wiggling the gun at the target and slapping away with no care for sights or trigger.

-1, clean, -2, -2
2.65s on #4; rest in par time

I was able to get to the range on Sunday and ran this drill. I completed this drill as a test and I shot it from concealed, once.

Beretta Elite II, Appendix holster and Blackhawk mag pouch under a knit shirt.

1) 1.83 clean
2) 2.71 clean
3) 2.65 clean
4) 2.74 clean

So I guess that puts me somewhere between level 2 and 3. I think it's a great way to test yourself and it gets me away from the FAST, which I am currently sucking on badly.

Made it to the range yesterday. Used a Glock 34 from the ready for level 1, trying to go under time for now was a non-starter. Pushed it a little, did not go slow fire.

First run

Pistol and holster used (if applicable) : CZ 75 SP-01 from ready

Level attempted: 1

Hits for each shape:
1) -1 on 4" circle
2) clean on the second run

This one really pissed me off since I decided to push my speed more on the 4" circle. Basically I got sloppy and just fired away once the front sight was in the circle, but not aligned well with the back sight. Combined with me pulling shots low, meant I missed the easiest one. The second time I still shot 'fast' but slowed down just enough to verify the sight picture before firing.

At least the test seemed very doable at this level, just need that discipline to knowing how much speed vs accuracy you can trade off. I was initially worried about the 1" squares since I've never shot those at 5 yd before, but ended up hitting both. Going up to level 2 definitely seems much harder, but may give it a shot next week.

Hits for each shape :
1) 1 miss on the 2" circle and 1 on the 4" square
2) miss on 1" square

4) miss on 1" square

I wish I took a picture of the target, my three misses on the 1" square were all about 1" high and touching. How does that happen?

Ran it again from ready without holster, using my CZ 75 SP01. I actually like this drill a lot due to the reasonable round count, ability to run on a public range, good test of patience and skill, and you can push yourself and track progress.

Level 1 attempted, 2 runs again.

First run - hit 10/10. Really surprised myself since I was pushing speed a bit more (2-3 sec for 4 shots) this time on the 4" circle and actually made hits with all my shots touching. While I know this isn't great for many of the shooters here, it was the first time I actually felt like I was seeing the sights, sight picture, and getting a smooth trigger press once I verified the sight picture. Felt in the zone.

Second run - hit 9/10. Missed one on the 2" circle since I was pressing speed on the 2", 3" and 4" targets. Pressed too much, and threw that one. The others had higher spread, but still hit. So hard to find that perfect balance. I know if I went super slow I could clear level 1, but pretty sure I would fail level 2, if for no other reason that the 1" square being so hard to hit.

Clean it twice, oh yeah, now on to level two. I did try the 1" square on the timer a couple times and 2.5 seconds is a really long time. I was surprised at how much time there was, now I'm sure I won't be saying that once I have to do it from the draw.

CZ P-01 Level 1: 9/10 twice. Dropped 1 on the 1" square first run and 1 on the 2" circle 2nd run.

S&W 442 Level 1: 10/10 twice. This revolver hits right at the top of the sights at 5 yards.

G3 G-17 Level 1: 10/10 twice. I had to figure where this pistol shot at 5 yards. It is sighted in for me to hit at the top of the sights at 25 yards. I had to drive the dot at 5 yards. The front sight completely covers the 1" square at 5 yards to hit the center of the square.

I'll probably try level 2 when I get a chance. I might even try level 3 and 4, but it looks pretty difficult to me. :)

G19 Gen3 from low compressed ready. I ran Level 1 twice and didn't clean it either time. I shot faster than I normally would when not using a timer.

Level 2. G-17. :( Fail. That **^&%$ 1" square. I did an 18 round mag of the square with 2.5 second par with 16 hits.
4267
Then the first try for score, a miss. If I got hits I was over time on the 4" circle.

What is the attraction to those tiny targets? :)

Level 1 again, wanted to try to push my speed a bit though. As a result, missed the 1" both times, threw a few shots on the 2" and 3" targets. 1st attempt for some reason I was able to do much better on the 4" target, which made me push my speed too much 2nd time through and blow up my grouping. I really don't know how I have such clean looking group on that first run, yet can't do that on 2" dots. I think some of it is mental causing flinch or something...

Been out of the regular live fire practice regiment of late. Between the elk seasons here in Colorado and being busy at work, I just haven't been motivated to get out other than a few local matches this past month.

Spent a few hundred rounds this evening shooting this DOTW though (and some Garcia dots to boot). It was the first time shooting this drill for me. And I got a refresher for the real definition of shooting "cold". :-P It was only 25 degrees. Felt colder. My little Forest Service shooting spot is in the shade early this time of year and we have snow on the ground already.

Anyway, equipment was my duty pistol, a stock 9mm 226 shot from my duty rig (Safariland 6360). I chose the level 3 for the drill and shot it large to small.

First go, I went .10 over (2.60 ) on the 4 shots to the large square, 2.59 on the 2" circle and ganked the 1" square rushing. :-/. On the bright side, I shot it clean my next two goes with sub 2.50 strings.

Channeling Bill, I shot another mag doing draws to the 1" for good measure and only put one a scad low. The mental pressure part of believing there was enough time for the 1" square was interesting. I 'felt' like it was the crux of the drill but I consistently was below 2.2 or so even when I really took my time. I caught myself pushing the speed even after I'd realized I really didn't need to, for the level 3 version anyway. Interesting. Level 4 will reek havoc I suspect. But It was really good to go press the trigger in live fire a bit!

Pistol: Walther P99, Trijicon HD sights. (Obviously, first shot on each shape was with gun decocked.)

Level attempted: 1
Cleaned twice in a row, easy peasy.

Level attempted: 2
Best result was 9 hits out of 10. I had consistently one or two rounds that were either misses or went over time. For some bizarre reason, these were while trying to shoot the two largest shapes. I really could use another .5s on the PAR with this one...

Notes: This was the first live fire training in two weeks. And it was raining. Everything is more difficult in the rain...

3" clean
4" - 1
I actually have video of my level 4 runs, but technology hates me as much as I hate 1" squares at the moment.

Tried this today at the range. Half the shots are from my friend.

Did better on the 1" square and was able to fire the gun without waiting for forever like before. Last time I tried speeding it up but threw the shots by shooting too fast. I think the grip and trigger work helped a bit.

2" and 3" targets I was able to get some good hits, but had 1 thrown at 2" low and out, and one of the 3" shots was thrown low but stayed in.

4" made my hits, but it was spread wide. Was trying to get hits on a cadence but still yak'ed the shots worse than I'd wanted when shooting in a string. More work to do on the range...
