I'm planning to look at a used two-tone USP45 soon, and I'd like to know what issues to look for. I know very little about HK pistols (but enough to know that I want one).

The date code is KH (ha), which I think indicates that it was made in 1997. Is the date significant? Was there perhaps some update that this pistol would have missed?

Also, does $600 seem like a good price if it's lightly used and comes with 2 mags?

Thanks for any advice.

A good starting place.

I own one and it is a very solid pistol. Accurate, reliable, and built to last. Definitely one of the most accurate out of the box .45s.

The only two down-sides that I see for this HK model are the large-frame and high cost of magazines. Someone with small hands would have a difficult time manipulating the gun.

$600.00 seems fair if the pistol is in good condition.

You might look at the various USP threads GJM started about the USP as a field pistol, lots of good information.

I like my HK USP and USP Tactical. Very accurate. I have big lean hands and it fits me well. I went with Trijicon HD orange on the regular USP.

USP 45 do not have the standard light rail that HK45, HKP30 have. GG&G adapter is available but I have no experience with this.

My department issues USP45's to patrol and USPC 45's to detectives. The USP's are big, solid, soft shooting guns, though I do prefer my compact over the full-sized.

The KH pistol mentioned by the OP is from 1997. I'll be interested to see what the HK pros on this website say about upgrading the firing pin/block/spring on older USPs. I've read other gun and fan boy websites but most of it is emotion filled opinion without any support for their argument. In any case, making the changes will add about $ 100 to your costs.

Thanks for the replies. From what I've read, it sounds like the updates after 1997 were not essential to the safe and reliable function of the pistol.

I have a 2001 model. I believe the firing pins on the pre 2001 models were the potential weak spot. I believe it was 2001 where they made a change to the firing pin.
