If you rack a shotgun in space, no alien will hear it - so how can it scare them or an incoming asteroid from Earth?

In space, no one can hear Mom's Demand Action screaming about the children.
I have a friend at Johnson Space Center, and my understanding is the asteroid capture thing isn't held in high regard.

The video shows it firing one pellet. What makes it a shotgun?
A miss is going to travel indefinitely until it hits something. 178,000 years from now we may accidentally declare war on the lizard people. Or something. Whatever it is, I'm scared.

Holy skeet shooting. Figuring out the correct lead on an asteroid would take some serious math.

Well I think the Danes have come up with a suitable buckshot round for the space shotgun.
