View Full Version : Best source for crime statistics/reports?

After hearing Tom Givens describe the utopia that is Memphis I'm inspired to find out exactly how good/bad my city is and pinpoint the worst areas so I can stay out of them. Quick googling reveals that I either live in the equivalent of a third world hellhole or a fairly safe city, nothing I can draw a conclusion from. So can anyone point me to a good source? Preferably something that breaks down by zip code or something smaller than just a city. Better yet an Android app.

This is a start:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/pages/crimestatistics.htm

Specifically:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/crimereports/09/citCh9.pdf
is broken down by PD.

Best bet is to try to do a search for your specific city with the words "crime statistics" in it. A number of agencies post their numbers on lilne. Failing thta, as mentioned, the UCR is a good source, as is the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The Census can also provide some data. It doesn't cover everyplace, but http://spotcrime.com/ is really good for folks who don't feel like digging through lots of tables and data. http://www.mylocalcrime.com/ will also give data by zip code, if the data is available.

Thanks guys, I'll check these out and make a habit of doing this for any city I travel to. Tom actually sent me a quick breakdown (thank you sir!) showing SA's violent crime rate at about 1 in 300, which is what I had come up with. Not quite "Mogadishu on the Mississippi " as he puts it but I think I'll still carry a gun ;)

San Antonio isn't bad at all. In fact, it's fairly good in many respects. IIRC it is near if not in the 25 safest big cities classification.

Correction: i did the numbers wrong, SA is more like 1 in 175 for violent felonies. Still, not bad especially if you avoid certain parts of town.
Dr. DA - I did see us listed as a Top 25 safest (#8?) but also as a "very dangerous city " on another site, hence my question for reliable information. I think our relative proximity to the border gets some people too excited. That being said we've cut out all travel to the border, much less Mexico, unless it's an emergency. As a pale blond 6' tall person I stick out a little too much.
