Week 126: Defoor Pistol Test 1

Results may be posted until September 21st, 2015

Designed by: Kyle Defoor
Range: 25 and 7 yards
Target: USPSA Metric with additional B8 repair center. Download B8 here: https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=281&d=1322428748
Start Position: Concealed and holstered for all strings
Rounds Fired: 15

Defoor Pistol Test 1 is intended to be run cold. In the video below, Defoor specifies a week or ten days of not shooting to meet his definition of cold. A lot of us aren't going to go that long without shooting. Do use it as the first drill of a shooting session without prior warmup, however.

Defoor also specifies 6 yards as the closer shooting distance in his video. The distance has since been changed to 7 yards.

Position the B8 repair center so that the bottom edge aligns with the C/D zone of the USPSA Metric target. You can see the positioning in the video.

String 1: Start with your hand touching the target. At the start signal to run to the 25 yard line, face downrange, draw, and shoot 6 rounds to the B8 repair center. Score the B8. Must have at least 50 points, must complete string in less than 30 seconds (including running uprange.) Over time shot or less than 50 points = FAIL

The rest of the test is conducted at the 7 yard line, with the B8 repair center now representing a hostage.

String 2: At the start signal, draw and shoot 1 round to the lower A-zone. It will actually be the upper half of the lower A-zone, directly above the B8. Must hit in under 2 seconds. Over time shot or miss (out of the reduced lower A-zone) = FAIL

String 3: At the start signal, draw and shoot 6 rounds to the lower A-zone. It will actually be the upper half of the lower A-zone, directly above the B8. Must hit with all shots in under 4.5 seconds. Over time shot or miss (out of the reduced lower A-zone) = FAIL

String 4: At the start signal, draw and shoot 2 rounds to the upper A-zone (credit card in the head.) Must hit with all shots in under 3.5 seconds. Over time shot or miss (out of the upper A-zone) = FAIL

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

I HAVE to warm up. Last time I did one of these with running I pulled a hammy.

I don't understand how you score a B8..

String 1 - 24.99 seconds 1 10 ring 2 8's and 2 7's (1 miss). FAIL
String 2 - 1.88 seconds PASS
String 3 - ?.?? Only fired 5 shots :( I can either focus on the front sight or focus on counting, can't do both. FAIL
string 4 - 3.21 some how counted to two..

I haven't fired a round in 11 days and my dry fire hasn't been good. Pretty pissed at these results. Didn't even want to post them, but I really want to win a gun. I need to practice more at the 25, still haven't figured out how to hit small things at distance with these trijicon HudeD's.

Used a Glock 34 with Trijicon HD yellow front sight and a Warren Tactical rear. Concealment (for the 7 yard strings because I got in a hurry and forgot to put the vest on before shooting at 25) open front hiking vest. Holster was a CompTac strong side OWB.

25 yards 22.11 seconds, score 46 – Fail for score and for not using concealment garment as required.
7 yards 1.62 seconds 1 hit – Pass
7 yards 4.61 seconds 5 hits upper A, 1 hit upper hostage – Fail for time and hitting hostage.
7 yards 3.33 seconds 2 hits – Pass

Observations: These drills are a heck of a lot harder than the LEO quals I used to do. Also more fun and challenging in a good way, you actually get something out of it in fewer rounds. Not surprised at the Fails, they were a lot closer to a Pass than expected, and the Passes were quite encouraging. This was fired as the first course of the day. The last time I did any live fire was on Friday August 14, 2015.

Pistol, holster, and concealment used: Glock19 (G4), Keeper AIWB, Polo shirt.
String #, Pass/Fail - Time and number of hits for each string:
1. Fail -- 20.83 seconds, 49 score (missed by 1 point).
2. Fail -- 2.06 seconds (0.06 overtime), hit was good.
3. Pass -- 4.01 seconds, all six hits.
4. Fail -- 3.69 seconds (0.19 overtime), 1 hit and 1 miss high by ~1/4".

Anything you noticed:
I really liked this test, and was looking forward too it. Shooting a test first thing is different, and stretch exercises every morning are a good idea. I had a lot more time to shoot after the 25 yard dash than I expected during string 1, regret not taking more time on the first shot (threw it up and left outside the "7" ring on the edge of the paper). String 3 was surprisingly good, and the failed strings weren't failing by much. May try this again, it was fun.

Cz p09 , JMCK AIWB, t shirt
String 1 - fail. 17.71 seconds, 44 points, 1 off paper, first shot at 10.08
String 2 - pass, 1.88
String 3 - fail, 5.05, clean, 2.42 draw, missed cover garment and got hung up
String 4 - fail, 3.26, missed 1(.5 inch low)

I really enjoyed this test. I came in knowing i could make the times if everything went right...obviously that didn't happen. I figured my biggest challenge would be scoring 50 at 25, if i could have pulled the 1 on paper i would have made it..If ifs and buts were candy and nuts...

Overall i really enjoyed it and will incorporate it into more sessions. The times are challenging without being stupid hard, just enough time to do everything right.

I don't understand how you score a B8.

String 1 - 24.99 seconds 1 10 ring 2 8's and 2 7's (1 miss). FAIL.

Each bullet hole is worth as many points as the number of the ring it is in

Each bullet hole that breaks the line between two rings gets the highest value of the two rings

Holes in the X ring are worth 10 points

Add them up

Your score is 40/60 (10+16+14)

I didn't have any USPSA targets so I printed out a B8 repair center on an 8x11 sheet of copy paper, placed it just below a paper plate, and threw a 3x5 index card above those.
3843

String 1: 23.xx seconds, 45/60 FAIL (forgot to write down the fractions of a second)
String 2: 1.69 seconds, Hit, PASS
String 3: 3.52 seconds, 4/6 hits, FAIL
String 4: 3.51 seconds, 1/2 hits, FAIL

Observations:
I dry fired most days prior to running this drill but my last live fire session was 08/23/2015, so I hadn't fired a live round in about 9-10 days. This is an awesome test of cold, on demand performance. I failed miserably, so I'm very disappointed but I liked it so much I think I'll use this as my cold benchmark for every range session I can. I don't do a lot of 25 yard shooting so I was happy to put all 6 rounds into the scoring rings. I threw two rounds on String 3, which was entirely on my because I finished the string with almost a full second left in the PAR time. I could have slowed down just a little and guaranteed the hits. String 4 was bad all around. I missed the PAR time and one of the two shots.

Gen3 G34, concealed in a Keeper under a polo shirt
String 1: 13.71, 57 points
String 2: .89/1 hit
String 3: 2.27/6 hits
String 4: 1.75/2 hits
FAIL, see comments
Things I noticed: I've tried the Turbo Defoor Pistol Test 1 (same as the regular Defoor Pistol Test 1, but with halved par times) on several occasions and this is the closest I've gotten. I can't resist trying it. Just missed it by .02 seconds on string 3 this time. The accuracy standards make the whole thing really touchy.

For future reference, the reduced A zone is 6x6 and the credit card is 2x4.

I haven't shot for 3 days. I hope it never has to be longer than that. :)

This was a big fail. :(

Shot cold. Didn't realize it was from concealed and shot the whole thing from open carry.
18.08 26 points fail
1.76 hit OK pass
5.15 hits OK, over time fail
2.98 2 misses. fail.

I realized that I had shot the 25 yard portion way too fast. Since I had already done my failing run, I decided to see what was needed for me to pass. I fast walked back to the 25 yard line and shot 50 points 1x in 29.44. 1.77 hit OK, 4.41 5 hits, 1 on the hostage, 3.04 1 hit 1 miss. Failed again.

Ran it again. ran to 25, 57 1x in 22.65, 1.94 hit, 4.82 hits OK, but over time, 3.20 hits OK.

I always used to like it when they had fixed time standards courses in IPSC and IDPA. I knew what times it took me to do certain things and could always score well. The fixed times on this threw me off. :(

Things I noticed. Fixed time drills can be gamed. After a shooter figures out how much time there is to do a drill, then they can find ways to do better on the drill. If I wait a few days and reshoot this drill, I am confident that I will do better. I realized after shooting the FAM a couple of times that the accuracy needed was less stringent than I usually require of myself.

The Defoor Pistol Test has very high accuracy standards. :)

Pistol: Beretta Centurion Cone - 9mm
AIWB Holster concealed under a polo shirt.

Strings:
1. Fail -- Time: 19.83 - 42/60
2. Fail -- Time 1.95 - miss just outside the A zone
3. Fail -- Time 4.02 - 1 miss just outside the A zone
4. Fail -- Time: 2.82 - missed both shots, one a bit high, one a bit low.

So total failure! I think I would have done much better if I had taken the time to get my hits. I met all the par times, so I can handle the manipulations. I just need to work on the accuracy piece. With the first portion of the test, I had one flyer off the paper of the B8, which totally tanked my run as I scored it a 0. I didn't shoot this cold, I fired 6 rounds for a FAST just before I ran this. FAST comes first, so t will be tough to run this cold. I hadn't shot in over two weeks though....

This is the first time I have been able to shoot a DOTW. Yay me!

P2000 9mm with v2 LEM and stock sights, a Keepers holster, from a Hawaiian style shirt

String 1 - 54 points, 25.45 PASS
String 2 - 2.00 on the nose, PASS
String 3 - 4.07, but one round just out, FAIL
String 4 - 3.23, PASS

This was my cold run when we first started shooting, after almost two months of no live fire. I do daily 3-15 minutes of dry fire, but have not been able to squeeze in range time since before my house move.

One of my main problems in shooting has been lack of speed. I have a tendency to get the hits, but fail at the times. I was determined to make the times on this one. I was somewhat shocked, especially at the first string. Solid hits, and way under the limit. I came so close to going over on string 2.

I am very excited since not only was I able to get to the range, I was able to do it AND shoot a current DOTW. Hopefully this starts a trend for me.

Thank you! I was shocked after the first string. In my head, I was taking forever to get rounds off, which is typical of what I usually do, and then to see the timer! I stared at it for about 10 seconds to make sure I was seeing it correctly.

I have been wanting to do a DOTW for ever, but trying to find time AND have access to a range that lets me do some of the things is a tough match most of the time. It should be better in the future. I should be doing some work with Mike Pannone after October, and the buddy I shot with on Labor Day has freed up his work schedule so we can do more (he is LE as patrol and is the #3 man on their busy SWAT team so he has not had much opportunity to meet with for the last year). Looking forward to more. Who knows? I may even be able to one day start a training journal thread :)

String 4: FAIL both low in head zone

Not to be pedantic, but Defoor states it should be shot from 6 yards, not 7 yards. Shot 2 weeks cold.

Gat: Robar G3 G34 with TTI connector kit and WOTG sights
Rig: JM Custom Kydex OWB v2
Cover: Arcteryx Atom LT

25y: 54/60 27:15 PASS
6y: 1:69 PASS
6y: 3:62 1 out (last round, went high) FAIL
6y: 2:67 1 out (last round, went high) FAIL

Notes: Went too fast on the failed portions.

Couple of things:

1. I don't have USPSA targets.
2. I do have some cardboard backers at my range, but they're all shot up.
3. I improvised the scoring zones. I really just wanted to shoot the drill or something like it, so it's close enough for me. It's not exact for official-ness. See attached picture.

Anyhow, I had some free time before the range opened up to the public so I figured I could get away with being downrange and shooting.

Concealed, G19 w/ Trijicon HDs, AE 124gr FMJ @ 1150FPS. In the interest of transparency, yesterday I shot my PPS and did a bit of dry fire work with a SIRT.

String 1: FAIL/28.85/39pts - 1-6/1-7/2-8/1-X. I suck at 25yd bullseye shooting. I dropped one completely off the paper.
String 2: PASS/1.65/-0
String 3: FAIL/4.01/-1. I had all the time in the world and went into it thinking I'd take it slow and ensure my hits, but towards the end of the string I felt the urge to speed up. Slapped the trigger on the last round. Probably would have gotten it had I slowed down just a tad.
String 4: PASS/2.12/-0. Took my time, got good hits (now why can't I do this consistently on the FAST?).

Improvised scoring zones:
