Week 125: 400

Results may be posted until September 15th, 2015

Designed by: Gabe White
Range: 25 yards
Target: B8 repair center, download here: https://pistol-forum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=281&d=1322428748
Start Position: ready
Rounds Fired: 40

This drill is going to focus on accurate shooting at 25 yards, both with and without a time limit.

Start with the gun loaded and in ready position of your choice (not on target.)

Shoot five shots to the B8, untimed. You can take as long as you want and shoot true slow fire. You can put the gun down, wipe off hands, regrip, whatever you want. Repeat for a total of four strings (20 total shots.) Score the target, including Xs.

Shoot five shots to the B8, with a par time of either 5, 10, or 15 seconds - shooter's choice. Repeat for a total of four strings (20 total shots.) Score the target, including Xs. Overtime shots count as misses.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

My slow fire was not slow, i had a hard time taking more time than i thought was necessary. Once the sights were lined up i made the shot. For some reason i struggle with slowing down on true slow fire. I knew 5 seconds would be way fast but 10 was about the same pace as my slow string so i went 10. Most strings came in around 7-8 seconds, again leaving time on the table for no reason. My first slow fire string i drove the dot...after that i used top edge. I probably could have had a few more slow fire points had i used top edge from the start. Either way my biggest take away is that when i practice at distance i need to stop rushing myself and take the appropriate amount of time for the trigger control necessary. And snatch city is bad.

Do you count the 7 ring? Does X count as 10?

If so, 308 2x with P226:

and 308 308 3x with P229:

10 second par. I finished most in 7.5X seconds.

Things I noticed: I started out high with the P226 and actually did better on timed fire than slow fire. On the P229 it was the opposite, better slow fire and worse timed fire. I'm thinking perhaps this is due to the difference in sights, but am not sure. I've got to remember to look at the sight and not the FO insert for accuracy work. When I shoot "instinctively" the FO is faster to find and easier. When I slow down I start to get confused on where to focus The black on black of the P229 is slower to find but less confusing to focus on. I would have scored better with the P226, but my second to last string of timed fire I got a poor grip from the holster and instead of balking tried to run with it. I got off paper with those shots.

Thanks to Range1 for giving me some targets.

Pistols used – Glock 22 converted to 9mm with LWD 9mm conversion barrel and a Burris Fastfire III RDS; Glock 23 converted to 19 with a LWD 9mm conversion barrel (both have also had the .40 internals replaced with oem 9mm parts); M&P 9mm Pro Series with Burris Fastfire III RDS and Apex Trigger with forward set sear.

I fired the Glocks on 8/14 and was surprised by the outcome.

The 23/19 scored 163 x0 slow fire, 179 x1 with a 15 second par time. Grand total score 342 x1. I have been able to shoot this pistol more accurately than my other pistols on a number of occasions.

The 22/17 scored 187 x4 slow fire and 131 x0 and 4 Misses. Grand total 318 x4.

As the RDS seemed to make it easier to see the sight and target, did not have to fight the old eyes, I started wondering how the M&P would do with an RDS as I have not been impressed with it so far except for the feel. Put the RDS on the M&P and tried it today.

The M&P scored 183 x2 slow fire and 176 x2 with par 15 seconds. Grand total 359 x4. I am liking this combination so far. I know the timed score would have been higher had I not started shoving at the gun at the end of trigger press. Knew I was doing it, could see dot dip just as trigger released and could not make myself stop for 4 or 5 rounds. Those really hurt, but have something to work on for sure. Definitely not the guns fault.

Pistol used: Glock 19 (retracted ready position at start).
Total score for the un-timed strings, including Xs: 188
Par time chosen for the timed strings: 15
Total score for the timed strings, including Xs: 184
Grand total score out of the 400 possible points: 372
Anything you noticed: On the last string of the timed shots I decided to go faster (10 sec). The first 15 shots were in the black and it was looking better than the un-timed string. Time to pickup the pace... and 4 out of 5 in the last string were in the white (two 7s and two 8s).

Pistol used: Gen 3 G19
Total score for the untimed strings, including Xs: 118 0X
Par time chosen for the timed strings: 15s
Total score for the timed strings, including Xs: 120 0X
Grand total score out of the 400 possible points: 238 0X
Anything you noticed:
My slow fire and timed strings were fairly evenly scored. My slow fire strings were concentrated on the left half of the target while my timed shots were all over the place. I only used more than 10s on one of my four timed strings so I probably could have taken a bit more time and used more of the entire 15 seconds. I really need to practice more 25 yard shooting, as these scores were very bad.

Total Score Untimed Strings: 131, no Xs.
Par Time for Timed Strings: 10 Sec.
Total Score for Timed Strings: 90, no Xs.
Grand Total: 221, no Xs.

Observations:
Well that was an exercise in psyche and trigger control. B8s at 25yd are one of my weak points. On the Untimed I fire at about a 2-4 sec cadence. I had no Xs. Overall I wasn't to disappointed with a 131 on this. I decided to push myself so I set my Par at 10-secs. I shot 9.85, 9.89, 10.51, 9.97. I think I should've used a 15sec Par as I really felt the stress and urge to rush. The score showed that the rushing broke my concentration and my trigger control died with a score of 90. Most hits were left of center of the paper. Add this to the list of things that need work.

Pistol - HK VP9

Local outdoor range.

Score - Untimed: 146-1X
Par time - 10s
Score - Timed: 46-0X
Grand total: 192

Notes: Well, 19 of 20 rounds on paper for the untimed run, which is good for me.

Plus, generally my 'group' is centered, which I'm happy with.

Good drill, enjoyed doing this.

Par time chosen for the timed strings: Maybe I cheated here as I didn't pick a PAR as I rarely shoot B-8s and wasn't sure. I guess I could have chosen a conservative 10 seconds, but I just shot them at a moderately urgent pace and recorded the times.

7.19
7.66
8.54
6.84

So…10 seconds! :p The 5 second par would REALLY challenge me. I can keep 25 yard bill drills in the A zone sub 5 seconds pretty consistently, but this is obviously much more accuracy intensive.

Pistol used: Gen 3 G-17.
Untimed Score: 172 1x.
Par Time: 15 Seconds.
Timed Score: 135
Grand Total: 307.
Things I noticed: My untimed times were around 12 to 20 seconds. I chose a par time of 15 seconds and shot all 4 timed strings in less than 7.5 seconds. :( Another place where learning how much time you have would be advantageous. ;)

Shot this today with my BHP Practical. PerFecta 9mm ball ammo from WalMart.
My son timed the second stage with his phone. Only timer available.
Slow stage shot two handed. Score 162 2X. Had to hold low and right since the gun was shooting high.
Fixed sights so no easy adjustment possible.

Rapid stage suffered from lots of low hits. The PerFecta had seemed to be working best
in the BHP at 50 feet. The low hits in rapid at 25 were
something of a surprise. My son suggested it was operator error and I admit to some of that. I think the
ammo could be a bit of a problem. I may be looking for another
brand to try. (Had trouble finding a good load when I reloaded 9mm as well. They would all go
bang but not group well. I used both lead and jacketed bullets with almost identical results.)

Used 15 second par time. Even trying to slow down on the later strings, I finished most at
10 seconds. Had shot a couple Colt 1911s before going to the BHP. In contrast the BHP trigger was
unfortunate. It has seemed usable, at least, before.

Rapid score 71 0xs. Total score 233 2x.

Anything you noticed: I shot better with a Par time! I forgot to count x's on the first run, and forgot photos. The first target was disastrous. I recall seeing the sight dip as I pressed the trigger, and forced myself to calm down on subsequent runs.

Here's a pic of the 48:

Finally got around to shooting this one today. Before I even went to the range, I figured a 10 second par time would be about right. Turns out I was right (and wrong).

Untimed: 129-1X
Timed: 74-0X
Total: 203-1X

I'm not proud of the untimed score, but comparatively, the timed score is a straight-up disaster.

My timed strings ranged from 6.3 to 8.3 seconds, which is to say I was shooting too fast. In fact, the first string of the timed runs was *all* misses. After that first awful run, I told myself to slow down and really pay attention to the sights, and I at least managed to do better, although the 6.3 second string was actually the third one.

Clearly I need to get some more time in at 25 yards, as I'm much weaker there than I had previously thought.

Edit: oops, forgot to include equipment details:
