View Full Version : Cleaning Spectre II baffles (ongoing)

This is dipping the baffles in a 50:50 mix of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Later on, the lead acetate will be precipitated out into lead chloride by adding table salt and disposed of at the hazmat facility at my county dump. In the video and some of the pictures, you can see bubbles of lead floating to the top, popping, and the lead particles plummeting back down to the bottom.

Cleanup was easy. At 2.5 hours in, I pulled the baffles and wiped them off on shop rags. Reinserted for another 2 hours. Wiped off again, the results below. Literally like factory new.

That does seem to work quite well.

You have probably already tried this but I'll post it anyways. I think it should work for baffles.
I use it to clean my muzzle brakes.

I just unscrew them and soak overnight in Lemi Shine then rinse off in the morning.

That's pretty neat. Those baffles are stainless steel, right? I wonder if a similar process could be used with a 6061-T6 aluminum monocore.

Nope. You need an air compressor, space outside, a bag of baking soda, and an nozzle like this sandblasting kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007D30DO/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0007D30DO&linkCode=as2&tag=ratio07-20). That will clean your aluminum moniker safely as the dip will damage it and so will ultrasonic cleaning. I plan to buy the same setup for my soon-to-be-released-out-of-ATF-jail Warlock II (http://www.silencershop.com/silencers/rimfire/silencerco-warlock-ii.html) that also has aluminum baffles.

Folks have tried and that didn't work for encrusted baffles. However, many have found that Lemi-Shine along with stainless steel pins (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I5RNG1A/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00I5RNG1A&linkCode=as2&tag=ratio07-20) in a rock tumbler works wonderfully well on steel baffles. I'm looking for an used rock tumbler for this exact purpose as I just took delivery of the pins.

If you were going to do that, would you just chuck them in with you brass ?
I would, but I don't have baffles :(

But I do have an SS tumbler.

Not sure, not set up for reloading yet. Steel pins wouldn't hurt the brass?

No it doesn't seem to hurt the brass, I use stainless pins in a tumbler pretty similar to the one linked to in this thread.

You add your brass some water and dish soap and Lemi Shine if you think you need it, and let it tumble for a few hours. Comes out like brand new.

It's the best way of cleaning brass I have found.

I have heard that FireClean works wonders on caked .22 baffles. I have not tried it but I plan to on my next suppressor cleaning.

I'm sure the dip is much faster but my TAC65 suppressor baffles are Aluminum.

I tried the sand blaster with baking soda and it worked but boy did it take a long time and a lot of baking soda. Don't forget a respirator too.

I was hoping that a pretreatment of FC on a new suppressor, and then using it for subsequent cleanings, would help minimize the time/effort to get/keep aluminum baffles relatively clean.

I forgot to mention that......I tried this. Nope, did not work at all on the Spectre II. Recommend DOT5 silicone brake fluid (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007HOBHXQ/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B007HOBHXQ&linkCode=as2&tag=ratio07-20) which is what I am currently testing after this weekend's dipping of the baffles.

This blog post (http://www.rrdvegas.com/silencer-cleaning.html) has a very good bit on using silicone oil and other products. Recommended reading for this topic.

After 350 rounds, nearly all the fouling could be removed with a wooden toothpick and some paper towels.

If you are not pre-treating your silencer with this silicone oil, you really need to reconsider it.

Wow...bummer about the FC. I suppose I should take my baffles out and give them a good cleaning and try out that silicone oil. I am assuming that the Si oil will not negatively affect Al baffles.

Thanks for the link, LL. That is some good reading.
