View Full Version : Can Someone Explain to Me Grip Stippling on the Front of the Frame?

I'm being serious, this isn't snark. What purpose does stippling up front on the frame serve?

You mean where the weak hand thumb rests?

Yes - or at least where some people's weak hand thumb rests. Is it simply an index point?

I use grip tape to do it but yes.

This, and the double trigger guard undercut...

Awhile ago there was an online article interviewing Enos and Sevigny. Brian's position was to keep the thumb off the frame for a true neutral grip, which is what I personally do and why I don't understand the mod. Dave said that thumb's contact with the frame was a part of his technique, so perhaps there some validation...

I don't understand stippling the triggerguard.

I stipple both sides of the frame as reference points, one for my thumb and the other for my trigger finger when outside the trigger guard. But then, I've also stippled my remote control too. Perhaps I'm OCD, or have an odd fetish. :o

Think some people grip their gun with offhand index finger in front of the trigger guard

I'm sure some do, but what came to mind when LittleLebowski wrote the above comment, was the bottom of the trigger guard. I've seen several 1911's with the bottom of the trigger guard checkered, and I can't figure out why that's done either.

Exactly what I was getting at. I've got a good callous on my middle finger where the Glock trigger guard rides but I cannot fathom why you would stipple the bottom of the trigger guard.

I have grip tape on mine. Helps me roll into my grip and index off of. Not sure how much it helps

* I only do the forward 1/3 tho

I'd use it for a trigger finger index...but I usually just use the takedown lever indentation for that...and for my thumb. For reference, this is for when I shot Glocks a lot and didn't fly the thumb ala Enos...

I shoot 1911's/Beretta 92's now and mostly don't touch the sides of the frame of any gun...Helps the recoil track more up and down for me.

On my last stipple job, I was going along on auto-pilot when I realized I had started stippling along the underside of the trigger guard and along the front of the frame in the undercut. Took me forever to sand the stippling off. I can't imagine why anyone would put it there on purpose.

Helps you grip the pistol better. Frame...where you thumb goes. Grind you thumb into the grit..more grip, easier to control recoil.

Or maybe they just want to be like this guy. https://youtu.be/2_AccnRORfg?t=2m34s

I think that, rather than stippling, they should just cut in little thumb rests in there.

So I stipple the frame or use grip tape for my off hand thumb and under the trigger guard. Gives me a better grip and more control on the pistol--and yes, I have tried it both ways and prefer the texture over a smooth frame.

Here's another video from Mr. Defoor that talks about his grip, starting around 1:40 he discusses the stippling in both of those places.

I personally, like YVK mentioned did cut a ledge then stipple it into my Glock 19 and I love it. Agency arms is doing something similar, much more refined and pricey, but mine works well for how I like to shoot.

I see Kyle has smooth panels and stippled under the trigger guard. Good idea, but I stipple the side panels because I carry OWB.
