Power still out over major areas of downtown Long Beach today, including traffic signals.

Edited to add: har, the automatic shortening of the link is pretty funny too.

At least your explosion is explainable and it just was manhole covers that were launched. Nearby in Rhode Island the beach exploded for an yet unexplained reason and launched a woman. Perhaps a side effect of Climate Change?

Then again she just may not want to fess up about the 4 Three Bean Burritos she had for lunch.

That happened to me in Brooklyn. One evening, the gas mains blew up in back of our apartment house. Three manholes down the block shot up and flames like the gates of hell shot up. As kids we went to watch until our parents grabbed us. The power went out.

Give this was a NY apartment block, we had a crazy old lady who would periodically shout out her window that she was going to blow the house up. So after the explosions, she screamed - I told you I was going to blow the house up.

Today - she would have had the full SWAT turnout. We ignored her.

When I lived in Birmingham, a steam line burst. Unfortunately, a woman was sitting in her car at a stop light directly above the rupture and the steam vented into her car. She died a day or two later--such a terrible way to go. LINK (http://onlineathens.com/stories/070403/new_20030704041.shtml#.Vax6F_lViko). I walked by that spot multiple times a day for over 6 years. All the situational awareness in the world can't save you from something like that.
