Week 120: 99 Drill

Results may be posted until August 10th, 2015

Designed by: JodyH
Range: 7-15 yards
Target: 3x5 or 4x6 card, see below for details
Start Position: holstered, hands relaxed at sides, see below for details
Rounds Fired: 99

This was developed as a way to practice fundamentals (marksmanship at speed, draws, and reloads) with limited time and ammunition, using a repetitive "block training" format.

7 yards, 2.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
7 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw, fire one, reload, fire two (10 times, total 30 rounds)
10 yards, 3.5sec PAR: draw and shoot three (10 times, total 30 rounds)
15 yards, 5.0sec PAR: draw and shoot three (3 times, total 9 rounds)

Either 4×6″ or 3×5″ cards can be used as targets. The 3×5 version is obviously significantly more difficult. All shots must be fired before the end of the PAR time; shots fired after the PAR count as misses.

The PAR times are based on running the drill from concealment or a legitimate retention holster. If you want to use an open top style range/competition holster, deduct one half second from the PAR for each string draw string and one second for the draw & reload string (2.0, 4.0, 3.0, and 4.5). If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, reduce the PAR for each string of fire by one second (so 1.5, 4.0, 2.5, and 4.0) and shoot it from a ready position.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
Target used
Score for each of the four strings of fire
Total score

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

As you can see, when I start really pushing for time which is the case with the closest string in 2.5 seconds, and the reload string, I push my shots to the right. With all of the dry fire I have been doing lately the reload string is improving.

This was the second DotW for this session. Previously shot 25 yard El Presidente 5 times and started having a little difficulty getting front sight in focus, but a lot of other shooters with ocular implants and aging eyes have the same challenges and have overcome it so I’ll stop whining. Discovered my hiking vest which I really like for hiking and thought would be a good practice concealment garment really, really sucks when I get a little sweaty. With the heat and humidity the vest kept fouling the draw making it virtually impossible to make the par times. In fact I only made the par times and all hits twice.

So my extremely poor performance not withstanding I really like this drill. It provides a lot of practice on the fundamentals at speed and challenging goals to work toward. This drill or at least parts of it will be a part of my live fire practice sessions for the foreseeable future. Thanks Jody H.

This was a very tough drill for my skill level. I like to push myself and this drill definitely did!
