View Full Version : Sources of Nerdism That Aren't Political

I'm a nerd, and I enjoy nerdy things. Unfortunately, it seems that a number of my usual haunts for all things nerdy have begun to drift into the realm of politics and social justice commentary. That irritates me to no end, and really gets in the way of me geeking out about Star Wars and funny cat videos. I don't want to hear about Facebook's diversity problem, or see people express outrage about rape scenes in 'Game of Thrones'.

I'm curious if anyone around here as experienced the same thing. If so, where did you eventually end up? One of the sites I found that seems to avoid SJW babble is Laughing Squid (http://laughingsquid.com/). I'm dying to find some more.

Here, but my "ignore thread" list is getting longer...

"TV Tropes" is a pretty good nerd resource for nerdism, but a pretty big time sink.

Neat. This may take a while.

Oh yeah. I follow Phil Plait on FB. Lot of sciencey goodness as Dr. KiKi would say. Usually. Every now and then he drifts more political than science. Was sad to see the rainbow profile.

Ugh, very much yes. I'll out myself as a serious nerd here, but I've gotten REALLY tired of the back and forth scream-fest people are having about women playing Magic the Gathering. I wish that community could just collectively agree to treat women like people, find a way to eject those who don't treat women like people from said community, and get back to playing the game. I don't want my nerdy pastime to be a social justice debate; it was much better when it was just a fun, well-designed game that costs too much money. :(

That'd make a great ring tone.

Weaponsman and Forgotten Weapons (http://www.forgottenweapons.com) are two of my daily gun-geek checks. I've had a few people comment about my random gun knowledge . . . I credit those sites, a couple friends, and Dr. William Atwater.

Wait, that's a debate? And a thing? And a community? This is that card game version of dungeons and dragons, right? I feel like I have seen this logo somewhere, but not in years. And generally not without trenchcoats and acne attached.

Honestly, if I'd heard that those guys didn't want women around, I'd have said "don't knock it 'til you've tried it".

But they actually got near women somehow...and didn't like it?

And there's a screaming match about this?

Man...there are days I wake up and I'm pretty sure Rod Serling is going to appear in my living room and start explaining something about my life to someone I can't see.

Wait, that's a debate?

Google "gamergate" for a brief intro into the kind of... I don't even have a word for what it is. Just be sure you want to know.

Yeah, gamergate is just, well, I don't have the words either, but shock and disbelief are part and parcel of becoming informed about it.

It has never shared more than the fact that they both exist in a fantasy setting with Dungeons and Dragons. It's actually one of the world's most popular games, with the number of people playing it growing all the time. Beautiful fantasy art + strategic depth + ever-changing gameplay = loyal fanbase. I would honestly be quite surprised if I was the only one on this forum who currently plays.

To relate the women thing back to this forum, think of it in terms of people who tell women they should only buy pink J-frames, or that guns aren't for girls. Those people exist in the gaming world, and they suck there too.

Silicon grey beard is very interesting. Weapons man is absolutely NON STOP political commentary. I stopped reading it.

I've played Magic off and on since Beta, and it definitely has about 3% similarity to dungeons&dragons. Magic is kinda like hat might happen if Shogi and Poker had a mutant baby.

I think the pink gun analogy is really on point as far as the M:TG community is concerned.

I hate all of the PC BS. I accept that there are some issues in the nerd and gaming communities, but all the SJWs aren't doing anyone favors. They are just the polar opposite of the people who are the original problem; and just as hateful and irrational, but more self-righteous.
