Big fan of the Opinal's.

Other four, top to bottom: Fathers original scout knife. He carried this when he was in the Army, all camping and hiking trips we took, and then again when I was a scout. Gave it to me a few years ago.

Father's other main knife before switching to Spyderco. Two blade, unknown pattern, but likely a pen knife.

SAK Farmer. This or a variant is with me most days.

SAK Bushcrafter. Limited numbers, I think, and though not perfect, a pretty good field knife.

Here are a few family heirlooms. The watch is a Hamilton, the knife is a Case.

The .38 ACP has been in the family for many generations.

Sorry for the poor lighting of the pic. Just an Iphone shot.

I actually carry my Grandfathers Old Timer quite often (not the one pictured). It is a 3 bladed job. Stockman? While I can recall him carrying it when I was a kid, I don't think it was an antique. I wish I had his old pipes.

That's it except for my glasses belt and the iPhone I took the picture with. I've gotten lazy, I don't always carry a billfold unless I go to town. The knife I carry depends on what the days plans are and sometimes I tote around a snubby wheel gun with the same amount of slow strips. It just depends on what mood I'm in and or how I feel.

Why are those archaic Hi-Powers so attractive to me? :)

First one I shot in the 80's, I was astounded at how flat it shot at 200 yards compared to a 45 auto.

Yep, I like the flat shooting part and other parts. Like it's thin, like I used to be.

Snake shot?

Snake shot, yes. There's copperheads an cottonmouths around here. I know snakes are dormant now but I always have some shot rounds on me.

If you have time to access those rounds , in fact if you have time to access the gun, you have options that involve not killing the snake.

I'm not opposed to beating the snake to death if it'll take too long to access the handgun or snakeshot.

If you have time to access those rounds, you're not close enough for the snake to be a problem. I carry one or two shot rounds in my .44 revolver when out in the woods/swamp, but my main precaution is high boots and looking where I step. The only guy I know who has actually shot a snake about stepped on a big rattlesnake. He used whatever ammo he had in his Glock at the time. He won, snake lost.

Nice High Power though!

If I'm going to be in an area that looks particularly snaky I'll load the shot before hand or if I'm about to be struck I'll use what's in the handgun.

It's not that slow to load a shot round with a little practice in an auto loader. With a revolver sometimes I carry a shot first round up or the round under the hammer and rotate the shot to first round up.

Sometimes my bug is a naa mini revolver or s&w 340 loaded only with shot for snakes when they are not dormant.

I've bee surprised by snakes twice in my yard. A copper head and a cotton mouth. The copper head got away when I went for a hoe. After that I started carrying the shot. I was also surprised by a snake in my moms house. The naa mini revolver took care of the snake with minimal damage. I have also been close to ponds and have cottonmouths charge me. I prefer to remove as many poisonous snakes as possible so my cows, dogs me and grandchildren don't get bit. Not to mention the rats that get in the feed trucks and I use the shot to run off stray dogs.

I've had a number of unpleasantly close associations with rattlesnakes. I also had one IN my house once. When it went off rattling I wasn't sure exactly where it was or where to move or jump, so I stood still until I figured it out. I grabbed a 44 with birdshot and piled it up. Yes, 44 birdshot loads are hard on the floor. I've found two under the porch steps (different times) when coming home in the dark and they rattled when I stepped on the step a few inches above them. Several in the yard, one in the door of the garage that I stepped over going in and didn't see, several in the road close by, many when out hiking or dog walking. I kill them. All of them I see or come cross. My current dog is fairly snake smart, most of my dogs were clueless about them, and have had snakes come very close to them. One dog was bit in the face when looking for critters in the firewood pile. Dead. That's how I prefer my rattlesnakes.

22 birdshot is pretty puny. 9mm and 38 spl works quite well for me. 44 and 45 Colt birdshot works well, as does 45-70 birdshot, 410's in 45-70, and round ball loads in 45-70 and 30-30. Shovel, rocks, or the butt of a Winchester carbine tapped cheerfully on their head several times also works well.

In revolvers I keep the first round coming up birdshot in snake season. I have a spare 10 rd mag for g-19 with birdshot loads I carry along when walking. Have 45 auto birdshots also, but haven't shot a snake with them. The older Remington crimped brass nose loads. They seem to hold up to chambering a number of times without incident. I don't think they are making them any more though, wish I had another box or two.

I moved from the place that I had all the snakes around. I'm pleased to say I've not seem a rattlesnake at the current place in 10 years. Bull snakes are welcome and seem to hang around now and then, much to the dogs dismay. After conditioning her to the first snake she saw, she thinks all snakes are scary and bad news.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01/14/cac7884cc7710edcf633a564b3daeadb.jpg

I got a vacuum sealer for Christmas, and was finally able to put this pocket kit together. It's been an idea for a while. The premise was a kit that fits in the smallish side pockets of my carhartt pants, as I can't stand sitting on anything in my back pockets.

I suppose I'm the Goldy Locks of med kits, because all of the kits advertised as "pocket" or "edc" didn't have what I was looking for. Ones with sufficient items inside were usually gargantuan or misshapen, and wouldn't stay in my pocket securely if they fit at all. The kits small enough to fit mostly consisted of a SWAT tourniquet, and Quick Clot, with what was apparently $30 worth of vacuum sealing done to them.

So I made a rudimentary kit to get me by, and spent quite a while stealing as many good ideas as I could from all the smarty pants' here and on TPI. What I ended up with is what is pictured above.

Contents are:

1 pair nitrile gloves
1 Celox Rapid Ribbon
1 H&H Mini Compression Bandage
1 pocket CPR mask
About 2 feet of baboons ass duct tape, wound on itself in 2 pieces
And five or six wound closures tossed in because I had them, and they take up practically no space.

I would have done this some time ago, but honestly, the only thing I wanted the vacuum sealer for was this, and it seemed silly to buy it for one pocket med kit.

And thanks to VDM for drawing my attention to the Celox Rapid line of products. The Rapid Ribbon is ideal for pocket carry.

The instructor from Dark Angel Medical gave the thumbs up to the applicator as well, stating that the applicator would do a better job of delivering the granules straight to the bleed than the old packets of it did.

That's cool if they've managed to improve this iteration, but it still only does one thing. Hemostatic Gauze is a lot more versatile, which is key when only being able to have so much stuff on your person.

You probably know a guy...

I'm assuming this was a specific response for JDM based off of your common geography, but on a more general note; I was sure I would know somebody with a vacuum sealer, willing to indulge my medical kit fantasies. The reality ended up being that I knew a whole one guy with a vacuum sealer, and we weren't friendly enough for me to ask a favor; nor was he offering. Anyway, my point is that I'd like make an attempt at karma. To extend an open invitation to P-F members in the general Portland metro area, in need of vacuum sealing for a medical kit. I have a sealer, and small vacuum bags with one resealable end, like shown in my pictures above. Shoot me a PM, we'll make it happen.

I'm very confident I can do that in a front left Levi's pocket. Granted, I run the Streamlight Stylus Pro, which is slightly thinner than light, but I don't think that's what's making or breaking it.

Looks like the Blue Force Gear Ten Speed mag pouch for the spray, phone is probably just loose behind the pocket shield.
IME you have to find the right pants to minimize printing, but when you do the shield works great. I have one set up with a knife, Sabre spitfire in that same pouch, and a light.

That unknown pattern knife is a teardrop jack. Jack knives typically have one or two blades on the same end. Pens usually have a blade on either end.

Front left pocket of various jeans. Phone slides behind the shield on the left side (hence the stuff being concentrated on the right). It's not retained by anything but friction. Haven't tested it in slacks as I carry that stuff on a bellyband when dressed like an adult.

The spray is held by the BFG 10-speed pouch. It's loose until you put it into the pocket, then friction keeps it there. It stays put throughout the day. Being placed at the front of the pocket helps. The light is just clipped to the shield. I've since added a strip of duct tape to the shield -- the friction between that and the light's clip helps a lot.

It's an ASP Key Defender. I like it well enough -- same orientation as I'd use a flash light. My one gripe is the capacity (or lack thereof). The training cartridges went fast.

What are your thoughts on the ASP unit? The deployment should be the same/similar as the Sabre -- mainly concerned about the quality of the OC.

So nothing is attached to the pocket shield except the light? Does it all stay in place and draw/replace easily?

So nothing is attached to the pocket shield except the light? Does it all stay in place and draw/replace easily?

Sort of. The 10-speed pouch is threaded through the shield, creating a pouch for the pepper spray to ride in.

Yes, it stays in place just fine. I think carrying in jeans helps with that (pockets are a bit tighter than slacks). I've since swapped the light and OC's positions, as the longer light tended to want to move around a bit. Being sandwiched between the edge of the pocket and the OC pouch keeps it stable. For reference, I haven't yet lost anything when rolling with some guys at my jiu jitsu gym.

Getting to the phone is easy, same for the OC. The light is a bit harder to get to, but I'm thinking about tying a lanyard to it to make it easier. Putting stuff back in is just a matter of finding the pouch or duct tape. As far as putting it all in the pocket for the first time, I just slide the entire shield in with the light and OC already attached.

Ref the OC spray questions;

Saber Red is my go-to, has been for awhile now. For CCW type use the key sticks (which is the same as the ASP product, it's the one thing ASP sells that's worth a shit, except don't get the smallest ASP model, it sucks...), the Spitfire and the MK6 sized pocket models (like this size; https://www.copsplus.com/prodnum8471.php ) are all good kit.

I thought the same thing about the pocket shield until I got one as karma. I now believe it will fit most jean pockets, even those that don't seem big.

Yea, in your case I think the otter box will be the problem, less so than the S5.

I have an iPhone 5s. So, definitely narrower than yours. Having said that, I think the S5 would fit as I have the shield configured -- a few friends have those so I'm familiar enough with the size. I can't speak to the otter box as I don't know the dimensions. In my experience, both comfort and concealment are determined by the item's thickness. If you don't care about the phone printing, simply keep it on the outside of the shield and try to keep stuff from being right behind it.

There is such a thing as too small as far as pockets go. Three of my four suits I can't get the shield into without using more force than I'm comfortable using, for example. However, nothing says you can't cut the shield down to fit your pants. In general, the deeper the pocket the better.

Honestly, I'd suggest you spend the $25 and spend some time experimenting with it. Some guys carry a lot more stuff than I do on theirs, judging by the thread on TPI. Others just use it as a mount for a fixed blade. And if it doesn't work out it's not a huge loss.

In the "every" part. Unless you switch to another (but same) set up EVERY day. Of course, no one carries everything, everyday. I carry N frames, as well as K, J and others. Those are weekend or evening guns, based on what I'm specifically doing at the time. I keep an M7 holster with a WC 10mm in it all the time. It goes on when I need to close up the chickens and have already put my PJ's on. I'm sure everyone gets the idea of niche, situation specific needs. I just don't call it my EDC.

SLG's excellent paraphrase of John Stuart Mill. The original quote is "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice; a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice, — is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other."

Can a person ever truly carry enough grenades?

Thanks. Interesting ... but is it actually useful or just a cool little pocket gadget? I mean it looks like it would be fun to play with but not sure I would find uses for a blade that tiny.

I use a 701 as a stand in for my SF Pen III when the clicky mechanism is broken and I'm waiting for a replacement (as I am presently).

I've already killed two Zebra pocket clips this week. The extra strength pocket clip is the SF's best feature I think.

How do you like your Saddleback Leather Credit Card Wallet? I had one about 3 years ago and loved it....but the cards bowed and began to crack at the edges, mainly because I stowed (a moderate amount of) cash in the center opening. I gave it up and went to their smaller bi-fold, which works great for me.

No kitten poop everyday carry, lol. That being said this is tailored to me and my position in life. This is what I generally want on me at all times in an off duty capacity. Is it extreme?! maybe, maybe not, but decide what works for you and go do it. I'm generally a cat tq man and carry those mainly. However the simplicity of the rat and teaching some one else to apply it on the fly is nice. My buddy Colin is the one who planted that idea in my head one during a good conversation.

I love it. I can't recall how long I've been carrying it but have found EDC pics back as far as 2012 that show the same card wallet. I am pretty sure I've had it for at least 6+ years. I haven't had any cards bow or break in that time and I keep it pretty stuffed. The center pocket usually only has my GOV CC, couple of hotel club cards, and a couple of business cards.

I don't think there is anything extreme about that all. I won't beat you up too badly about the race gun, but I carry very similar gear, just a little more of it. Very comfortable, and not a hassle for me at all.

Hahaha thanks, if it helps I've got a 34, 17, and another 19 with irons and stock barrels that get used as well lol. I need to add some more med stuff, probably going to piece together a more in depth pocket kit. It's definitely comfortable and not a hassle, and I can add stuff for work if I'm working in a plain clothes capacity.

Nope JM custom Kydex. The rat might but the bandage will not, I would look at the ITS tactical pocket edc kit it has belt loops or the Dark Angel medical pocket kit. You can get the holders/pouch with out the medical stuff from both I believe.

Most commonly referred to as a "Michigan Roll." Except in Michigan, where its referred to as a... er, "Eastern European Ethnic Slur" roll. You know, as in Jimmeh Cahah lusted for them in his heart.

Except in Ohio, where it was a West Virginia bank roll.
I refuse to accept the idea that Suckeyes missed out on a chance to slam Wolverines.

Hey hey easy there!

I must have grown up in the wrong part of WVa, I don't even remember seeing a 'hundred until I went up to New Yawk. (Although in a slightly convoluted way this might prove your point)
And that was when you got your first pair of shoes, right? :p

Actually, when my father retired and the company he got a job with was bought out he was transferred to Enemy Territory, AKA Columbus, OH. My folks noticed that whenever there was a report of a crime, the local news people always managed to tie Detroit into it. Dad was... amused. (He also had fun referring to the posters of "Block Letter O's with a Buckeye Leaf" as cannabis...)

But whenever there was a customer service type issue it was always blamed on "Those darned West Virginians." One day the guy was very late for a srvice call on some appliance or other, Mom called the store, the lady made the predictable Mountaineer slur, and the service tech showed up an hour or so later. "Sorry, Ma'am, my brother was supposed to make this call but it's such a nice day he took hos boy fishing, so I'm covering his calls as well as mine..."

Lots of West Virginians moved into the eastern half of Ohio, so I guess slamming them was a higher priority.

You really make money doing that? And I have so much trouble typing/writing/using my brain. No way I could be a blogger.

I'll ask her if that's cool but it's been more money out then in for sure. She has gotten hired by a few companies to do stuff for but ya, people who blog are in it for the passion of doing it. Hence the reason I go to your blog and read your articles, your drive is obvious, very much reminds me of my wife's drive to push out good posts.

Appreciate that, PM if you want with the link I enjoy reading non spam blogs.

It's all about passing on knowledge in my opinion. What good will it do if you learned something through experience and don't tell or try to teach anyone so that they can learn from it? Plus its good when it's good and not too bad when it's bad.

Haha yeah no... clickbait and all that is a vile practice.

People question the hundreds but make no mention of the hand grenades? ;)

Are those live?

I had to leave a $20 deposit on the one I borrowed from the grumpy gun shop guy for the photo-op if that answers your question.

As cool as grenades would be, the cost and one-use nature of them keep them out of my budget.
